Gary because I'm so original! I remember in my Silver game the first time around I named my rival ??? because that's what it said when I found him! XD

I named my rival Shigeru. Shigeru is the japanese name of Gary, for people that don't know.

my bro started the game and he named the rival after his imaginary friend so now iI'v got a rival called luke, not remotely intimidating =)

normally though i name them gary, except for in GSC where i named them ash as you have to fight him in silver cave

I always named my rival in the original Red version Gary (unless I was joking around and named him "Jerk,") so I did the same for my FireRed.

As for Crystal, I named my rival Nick because that was the name of this one kid at school that was always being a jerk to me. O_o
