in a team of maybe four or five, which types do you think would be the best successful combination?

right now i have a grass, electric, a normal/flying, & a water with a really good ice move. for some reason i feel like im missing something, or that i should replace someone but idk who.

I don't know how the weakness/resistances go beyond R/B/Y, but I always liked a good Ground type to take out Poison and laugh at Electric attacks, or a Psychic to take out Poison and EVERYTHING ELSE with its awesome Special. :P

I think the only 3 staples of any team are ground, water and flying. Ghost as very high priority too, to eat up normal and fighting attacks.

    I somehow ended up having no Water types on my team this time around - I'm actually liking it quite a bit. Water has always been one of my least-favorite types, even if it is pretty versatile. ^^;

i usually play around expecting double battles, so i always go for 4 types:
-a ground/flying or levitate combo (quake them till they drop lol and the partner doesn't get hit...)
-a dragon for overall great stats and power
-a psycic is good to get later on since they own.

this is mostly a sweeping gig, as i dont do much debilitating before i take them down.

Hm, what are the Dragons like nowadays? RBY only had Dratini/Dragonair/Dragonite, and with no Dragon attacks (barring Dragon Rage, which is fixed-damage), and no ability on Dragonite's part to learn Flying attacks ... not much use. :(

Not saying it's a bad Pokemon, just ... so much wasted potential.

Gotta have a fire type. I could care less about everything else. They all vary depending on what I feel like raising, but a fire type must be in the arsenal.

For me I always try to have a Psychic type, an Electric type, a Ground type and a Water type.

For pure aesthetic value, yes. Must have a fire type, and it must know Flamethrower. There are plenty of types that can do what Fire does, I suppose, but nothing beats being able to THROW FLAME ON SOMEONE. Just ask Carlin.

lol yea, i used to be obsessed with fire types. i before i really knew anything about pokemon, i thought they were the best you could have & basically that they owned any other type. haha boy was i wrong.

I have to have an Electric type on my in-game team, simply because it's my favorite type :D on Diamond right now I have Electric, Water, Fire, Dark, Flying, Poison and an HM slave. I'll probably level a Ground type in time for the last gym, but until then I should be okay. I haven't given the Elite Four any thought either, as I'm not even halfway through all of the gyms yet.

In the game, Electric types always bugged me ... just because most Psychics learn Psychic, Fires learn Flamethrower, Grasses learn Razor Leaf, Normals learn Body Slam, but NOTHING learns Thunderbolt on its own. Just inaccurate Thunder and pathetic Thundershock.

Not in gen. 1 at least. It's a pity, 'cuz they look wicked cool.

 coming from a person with a raichu ava
that is annoying but there's a tm for thunderbolt and electabuzz learns thunderpunch. if nothing else you could just use an x accuracy

 That's why I said "in the game" - in the anime they're great.

Okay, 1 Pokemon of your choice gets Thunderbolt and the one with the second-lowest Special gets a pretty-good Electric attack. I dunno, just sort of disappointing, like the Dragons. ;)
