So the last game I completely played through had been blue and silver barely introducing breeding so I am not completely sure on all this breeding stuff.

My goal is a Shiny Timid Gengar, though I keep finding all this stuff about IV's which I cant really make sense of. I know EV's are affected by super training so I can do that easily, but how do I affect IV's? Do they still need to be fiddled with now that there is super training?

So far I have nearly 3 full boxes of timid gastlys.

My breeding pair are my Timid Gengar (holding everstone) and a japanese modest gastly.

IVs are individual values. These are bred into the pokémon and can be controled (to some extent) by using the destiny knot. IVs are passed down from Parents to egg/child. The highest IV a stat can have is 31. The higher the IVs, the stronger the pokémon will be. The only way to tell if you have high IVs is the Judge.

EVs are Effort Values and are awarded upon defeating another pokémon in battle. Each species of pokémon awards different effort values into base stats (atk, def, spd, sp.D, sp.A, etc.) and determine how many stat points your pokémon gets when he levels up.

Unless you are planning on the Gengar being your ultimate pokémon to end all battles, you shouldn't need to worry about IVs too much. But if you do want to get into it, there are some nice tutorials on Youtube.

Ahh thankies! I have like 3-4 gengars now trying to get it perfect if I can get him to have good IV's I'll be happy.

Is there anything specific I need to do to get him shiny?

the most effective way to breed a good pokemon is to get your hands on mons with at least 2 perfect IV's and start from there. Either get a friend safari code with a ghost type that can breed with gengar on it or get a ditto :)

Everyone here is being so helpful, I feel somewhat proud for some reason. Anyway, if you need more help or have any other questions, then please use the X/Y Quick Q&A.
