See, I got that, but I thought it was funny because Nintendo made a subpar, below modern graphics capability handheld system with most of its games being gimicky. So, I found it hilarious because Nintendo is making a killing on crap.
 
tough its below modern quality, they have good games like mario, legend of zelda etc
however, because of the new systems which gives access to relatively easy games to every noob on the planet (old people, little kids, parents, etc)
there are some good games, but not many
super mario galaxy was freakin easy as hell
that is why nintendo makes a fortune
but that is going to change
either better games are made
or
everyone has a wii, but they get bored and stop buying stuff

i am curious about sony's project natal though (or is it from microsoft? i forgot)
but it will have problems, because there are no buttons

there is this new invention
controlling with just your brain
its still early in development, but with your thoughts you can sent limited commands to the computer

I have 30-40 games on the Wii, and 50-60 games on DS (excluding downloaded titles on both), there's no shortage on quality for either, just that their good games aren't as widely advertised and you gotta dig deep for them.
So what if the graphics aren't up to snuff with the competition? That doesn't make it bad, nor their games bad. You can't blame the hardware for the trash some publishers place on the system. Nintendo chose to invest R&D into new input methods for their systems, instead of just beefier specs.
Could they have had horsepower to made Sony and Microsoft while still working on new control schemes? Sure, but then you'd have a $200-250 DS, and a $400+ Wii (considering MSRP launch prices). With it both being pricey and experimental, it would've likely have been a massive flop. They wanted to keep costs down as to get an easy lead over the competition.
This generation was a big experiment and gamble for Nintendo, and it happened to have paid off for them. They paved the way, and now Microsoft (Natal) and Sony (The "wand") are following suit. They will not find the same success Nintendo did, due to their accessories being add-ons, not the standard controller. They will certainly bring interesting things to the table... but it won't pay off for them.
While I don't mind the graphical prowess of Nintendo's systems.... their online system is inexcusably bad.
I fully expect Nintendo's next generation consoles to be on par with the competition, give or take depending on the affordability of the technology (Nintendo's not one to make systems that cost 599 US dollars).

Yeah, the thing that bothers me about the Wii in particular is that I feel like it's basically a scam system. It is basically a tweaked Gamecube. The graphics are only a slight improvement (if you don't believe me, compare Zelda on both systems) and the "wireless" isn't wireless. They used an IR detector for motion sensing. That is really a joke. Even wireless computer mice are capable of more freedom than that, while still motion sensing. Heck, even the PS3, which isn't designed as a motion capture system, is capable of more freedom than the Wii. But quality is often judged by sales, so in that regard, the Wii is a legitimate system, as a lot of people have bought it and continue to buy it. But as BPM says, if it had launched with a MSRP of $400, it wouldn't have had the same success. At least with the Wii you get a pretty quality experience for a decent price. The Wii and the DS have also opened up the gaming industry to new people. Whether or not this is a good thing depends on who you ask, of course.

The camera at the top of the Wii Remote is NOT for motion sensing. It is purely as a pointer device. The Sensor Bar isn't 100% necessary, as it just seeks for infrared light sources. This allows for third-party, wireless sensor bars to be possible (the cable just powers the official Sensor Bar), or even things like flashlights, candles, or even TV remotes for the Wii Remote's pointer to function.
The accelerometers within the Wii Remote (and the Nunchuk) are what sense the tilt and position of the controllers (and the gyroscopes within the WiiMotionPlus accessory allow for more accurate movement tracking).

And, you miss Nintendo's point with the Wii. They put their R&D towards a new control scheme, instead of beefier specs. They didn't feel that, at the time, HD graphics were a necessity due to the low penetration of HDTVs (but Satoru Iwata stated that their next system would be HD ready given the growth of the market). They wanted to keep price down, and game development costs down, so you have what is, essentially, "two GameCubes duct-taped together" (as the old, old, old, old trolling adage goes). But why is that so bad? The GameCube had some of the best looking games last-generation, so a slightly more-powerful GameCube isn't such a bad thing. Depending on your TV, it still looks good when played on an HDTV (it does for me, at least).

And why would expanding the market be such a bad thing? Is gaming supposed be a seclusive, "us only" club? Buddy, I've been playing video games for almost 20 years now (got my NES and Game Boy at age 4), and I've had much more fun with my Wii than my PS3 or 360 (but I'd have to say my enjoyment of PSP and DS are equal... so much good stuff on both!). No, it isn't a powerhouse nor multimedia entertainment center nor an online revolution... but it does have great games.

If you're talking about Twilight Princess's port, the graphics weren't updated. The only thing that was changed was the controls and the world which was mirrored. No graphical improvements were made.

I'm okay with the Wii (getting a new Wii game for Christmas), but the DS just seems more personal and lovable. I think it's because the DS is older... but I digress.

And lately, I'm not into Pokesho. I blaim part of this sudden disinterest on the lack of oekaki postings. He should cut the crap with the komas and get moving on the real art!

I think I'd like the comics more if I had a translation of the text. Every time anyone asks for one, someone usually just says that the text doesn't matter, but I think it does. Sure, text may only be 10% or less of the importance in a comic, and it might not matter 50% of the time or more if the message is clearly portrayed in images, but sometimes to get the nuances of a joke the text really helps. Haha, I actually took a course in college on comic books, believe it or not. I just say that for complete disclosure, so you know what is shaping my views.

@BPM: If I've offended you, I'm sorry. But I can't "miss the point" with a personal opinion. It's okay for me not to prefer the Wii, and it is okay for you to like it. You are right, I didn't know how it works. I knew it had gyroscopes and accelerometers, but I thought the IR bar was what it depended on for data transfer (like a TV remote).

I don't think expanding the market is a bad thing, more people means more money for game development. But when Japan has a nearly 2:1 game release ratio, and most big name developers (Nintendo) included, you'd be a bit wrong of accusing me of thinking it is a "US Only" club. I actually enjoy playing the Wii with family and friends, it has really opened the market for doing more things with others. It just isn't my prefered system, and that's perfectly fine. Let the people who enjoy it enjoy it to the fullest, there's nothing wrong with that.

Now, I say this next part in jest: I always have to chuckle at games like the Food Network cooking game. You don't get to eat what you make! Where's the fun in that? Haha.

One one hand, this is one of the oldest traditions in video gaming. Do you remember how every movie and every toyline had a video game back in the day on the SNES? On the other hand, the fact that these guys still get money to make those games means that people are buying them. So on one hand, the market is extended, on the other hand, it might be tougher to find that quality game in the piles of low-quality games. Like you say, it isn't Nintendo's fault, but unfortunantely, it means that someone like me, who hasn't really become overly interested in the Wii, can get the wrong impression. But that's my fault, not Nintendo's, and I admit that.

Then again, as a guy who enjoys PC gaming the most, I certainly sympathize, because the PC is the king of "shovelware" as you called it. Maybe that's not so bad though. Some of these low budget development teams occassionally produce a few high-quality developers. I mean, even major league sports recruit from a minor league.

On an unrelated note, I apologize for derailing the thread. I hope no one minds that BPM and I are having a discussion on this between Pokemore releases. I'm sure we could stop if it is a problem.
 
qa1, I'm not offended, I just felt that your post was a bit... misinformed. An opinion is one thing, but misinformation is another.

I'm not sure where you're going about mentioning Japan in this, but when I said "us only" I meant as in "us versus them" ("core" game players versus "casual" game players) not "US" (United States). In that in the view of some of the self-proclaimed "HARDCORE GAMERZ" the people who do not obsess over the video game industry are excluded from trying games, and that it's so horrible for games to be more tailored for them. They fail to realize that not every game is meant for THEM to play.

Besides, given the current trend of gaming (even for the "core" games), it isn't exactly a positive future. More and more, publishers are relying on their established franchises or trying to create a "killer" of another game (and always failing to do so), rather than creating new IPs or new types of games (I can't be the only one who's tired of FPS games that either take place in a world/modern war or in space...). And, you can't blame them, either; the market has spoken: people don't want new things. You can't even blame the casual gaming market on this, as many "core" games have failed in sales regardless of their quality (Psychonauts, Beyond Good & Evil, Okami, etc.).

Rising development costs, less originality, shorter games, pricey DLC, and higher retail prices. That's what this generation has brought.... or maybe I'm just jaded.

Shovelware has always been there, and always follows the market leader: NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, and now Wii. It comes from publishers who would rather fund cheap games than new and creative titles. And somehow, they seem to sell enough for them to stay in business, because it never changes.

Nintendo(and sony/microsoft) shouldn't focus on the casual games for the wii/ds.
they make a lot of money on it, but they are also losing "core" gamers.
if one day they suddenly run out of ideas for casual games(not likely to happen), their base of fans/core gamers will have shrinked. The core games often fail, like BPM said, but i also think has something to do with that the creators want to make a lot of money more then make a good game. Because of this they try to make the target group as big as it can be, with result that the game fails to appeal to the core group.

Yeah, DLC is a shame. Sometimes it can be good, like when additional content is added as a bonus. But most of the time it is down right profiteering. They try to charge us for content that should have been included already. But I think one reason they do this is because pirating really is cuting into profits, especially on the PC. Another reason is because people keep buying it, so as long as people are willing to purchase DLC, they'll keep selling it.
 
While I don't agree with piracy (at least, for games that are readily available), you can't blame it for prices. The people who pirate would've pirated a game no matter what. Restrictive DRM and pricey DLC doesn't punish them, just the buying customers. But with services like Steam, it's clear that PC gaming is far from dead. They managed to make a unified platform for PC gaming that protects the games, but not in such a restrictive manner (Steam games can be installed on any number of computer, but you can only login to a Steam account on one PC at a time).

If you look at Nintendo's entire catalog of Wii and DS games, the number of "core" titles outweigh the "casual" titles. Most of Nintendo's "casual" games are well-developed and fun no matter what your gaming experience are. While Nintendo isn't perfect, they don't follow trends like some publishers do (particularly EA, Ubisoft, and Activision). They don't focus on a particular market, they focus on making whatever they want. Every publisher wants to make money. This is a business, after all. You don't make money, you don't stay in business (so many game studios closed in 2009 alone).

And the definition of what's a "core" game and what's a "casual" game are so loose, what one considers to be "casual" would be considered "core" to another. If you ask me, something like Tetris (where gameplay is more important than presentation) would be a "core" game, where newer Final Fantasy games (where presentation is more important than gameplay) would be a "casual" game. I don't mean that as an insult, either, but my feeling is that "core" game players would be more concerned about how a game plays, not how it looks, sounds, or the story. To prefer an "interactive narrative" over a "game" sounds like a rather... casual behavior to me.

Now, I never said Pokémore should stop with Pokémon art. He's real good at what he does... but I would like to see him do fanart of other things he likes. That's what fanart is about: drawing things you're a fan of.
Personally, I'd love to see his take on Arin from PangYa... but that's just me. :P

I think what we are seeing is a fundamental shift in gaming. While it was much easier to identify core and casual genres in the 80s, 90s, and even early 2000s, the new trend in development as well as the accessability of gaming to more people than ever means that what was casual at one time is now much more core, as BPM pointed out, while what was once core is now becoming more casual. The lines have definitely blurred. Instead of speaking in limited terms like that, I'd argue that gaming, like books, movies, televison, and other widespread media, can now be divided into genres and spectra. It is not longer a matter of gamers and non-gamers, it is now a matter of preference and spectra within each genre from casual to hardcore.

I do hope Pokemore does something new soon though. People will be mighty confused if they come into this thread since we have nothing else to talk about!

I think Clair's censorship is fine. It's not like she is claiming that she did the piece herself. It helps people who don't want to see the more explicit works still get a feel for Pokemore's art, and also allows people who don't have access or the knowledge of the places he posts his hidden works to still see some form of them.

He makes plenty of nude-free art, though. Want to make a Pokésho-based signature/avatar? Use one of his countless clothed pictures. Even with their breasts covered, it's still a suggestive pose.

I'm not fond of censorship in general, anyways. Nor do I think it's right to censor someone else's work without their permission to serve your own needs. Now, if Pokémore gave you permission to censor his work, then... well... I'd have nothing to say against that.
