I have been playing Pokemon since Blue and Red, but have only just got into competative battling. I have a team but I think it pretty much sucks, as I have only just read the thread about how to make the perfect team. Now I realise I have to have certain types of pokemon that I know nothing about i.e. Sweepers, Walls and Annoyers. I need help with this as I'm not sure which pokemon fit under those categories. I want a team with -

    • A physical sweeper
    • A special sweeper
    • A physical wall
    • A special wall
    • A spiker
    • An Annoyer
I can sort of figure out movesets for myself once I have a Pokemon assigned to each job. The only thing that I do want to have in my team is Palkia, as it is my favourite Pokemon. Apart from that I just want a starting point. I know I'm not really supposed to ask for a team, only to rate, but I don't even know where to start. Here is my previous team, and I'm pretty sure you will all think it sucks.

    • Palkia
    - Spacial Rend
    - Surf
    - Thunder
    - Aqua Tail

    • Houndoom
    - Flamethrower
    - Dark Pulse
    - Nasty Plot
    - Substitute

    • Mewtwo
    - Taunt
    - Ice Beam
    - Calm Mind
    - Recover

    • Rayquaza
    - Outrage
    - Earthquake
    - Overheat
    - Dragon Dance

    • Raichu
    - Focus Punch
    - Thunderbolt
    - Surf
    - Substitute

    • Glaceon
    - Ice Beam
    - Hidden Power
    - Shadow Ball
    - Blizzard

That is my team that I am aiming for. I raised my Mewtwo up before I knew anything about EV's and IV's so I think that I may take him out. Rayquaza I have not raised at all yet, just like all the others.

I hope someone can help me because I just don't know where to start.

Well, get rid of all the uber pokemon first, or the UUs, your choice (depends on the metagame). also throw in walling pokemon to take hits, as you lack even one.

What uber pokemon would be best for physical and special walls, as well as physical and special sweepers. What would Palkia be best at? I just want a starting point. I want to make an uber team.

I think I am going to use Palkia as a Special Sweeper, who would be good as a Physical Sweeper?

    Physical Sweeper? Special Sweeper? Uber?

Mewtwo does Palkia's job better. As for a Physical Sweeper, run Groudon and abuse Sunny Day.

Uber Team? Ok then, so you want to competitive battle, against no one. Well, ok then. I guess the in-game competitve field is under appreciated.

    Palkia=Special Tank
Physical uber sweeper. Go Attack Form Deoxys.

Not really. Uber battles are perfectly viable. Houndoom will not survive in one, however. I'm going to sleep.

OMG sims! You've come back to us!!

A Physical Wall usually ends up being a Spiker, and a Special Wall commonly becomes an annoyer in a few cases.

I can sort of figure out movesets for myself once I have a Pokemon assigned to each job.
You also need to learn how to EV Train, and breed for IVs.

The only thing that I do want to have in my team is Palkia, as it is my favourite Pokemon.
One problem amigo. Palkia is an Uber Pokemon, and therefore, is not allowed within the standard competitive metagame.

Apart from that I just want a starting point. I know I'm not really supposed to ask for a team, only to rate, but I don't even know where to start. Here is my previous team, and I'm pretty sure you will all think it sucks.

    - Surf
    - Substitute

    • Glaceon
    - Ice Beam
    - Hidden Power
    - Shadow Ball
    - Blizzard

NOTICE: I didn't even attempt to polish any of them up because it's too much work for me to handle, also not to mention it's not in full format

Okay. To begin, I want to point out some things.

    - Ubers aren't allowed in battling at all unless it's for an uber metagame, which is just a complete novelty metagame at the most. Ubers include Mewtwo, Mew, the GS Legendary Bird trio, Wobbuffet The RSE Legendary Trio, Deoxys, the DP Legendary Duo, Giratina, Manaphy, Darkrai, and Arceus.

    - You also need to learn the art of distributing EVs in the proper place. Depends on the Pokemon and the role that they play.

    - Don't use 2 of the same STAB attacks on one Pokemon (yeah I see that Glaceon with 2 Ice attacks).

    - Lastly, you need to make sure each member on your team can cover each others backs. For example, say I'm using a Starmie. The enemy then switches to a Zapdos. I can retaliate and switch to Mamoswine to absorb an electric attack for me.

We'll cover the art of anticipation another time. For now, you need some new members of your team. Seeing as Mewtwo, Palkia, and Rayquaza are banned, and Houndoom, Raichu, and Glaceon are far too pathetically weak to live in a basic match, perhaps you should start from scratch. I can assist you in a few options:

Physical Sweepers: Heracross, Mamoswine, Garchomp, Medicham, Weavile
Special Sweepers: Porygon-Z, Starmie, Kingdra, Heatran, Gengar, Alakazam
Clean-Up Sweepers*: Gyarados, Dragonite, Tyranitar, Salamence
Physical Walls: Forretress, Skarmory, Hippowdon, Donphan, Suicune
    Special Walls: Snorlax, Blissey
    Dual Walls*: Bronzong, Dusknoir

Now, to make sure you know of this, a Clean-Up Sweeper is basically something that comes in at the last minute, and can power up, and have enough Speed, and in some cases, Attack, to come in and ravage any remains of what would be oncoming threats.

Dual Walls can absorb hits of both Physical and Special, if used properly. Bulky Waters like Milotic and Swampert also make good damage absorbers.

As far as Spiking goes, Physical Tanks are usually common as spikers. Skarmory and Forretress can use Spikes, while things like Donphan and Hippowdon can run with Stealth Rock. It's either one or the other, don't try to act cool and overkill with both.

Annoying, is basically something for Dusknoir and Blissey to do, seeing as one can use Willy Wisp (Dusknoir), and the other can Thunder Wave. Abusing status is a perfect example of annoyance.

I'll cover more details tomorrow when I'm not so tired.

EDIT: If you intend on just running with an uber team, perhaps I can assist with that. Tomorrow.

Thankyou so much Iceman, I have been playing my friends at pokemon for years, but now I have the chance to battle people online I am a complete noob. I didn't know that no one uses ubers so thanks for that lol. Thanks for the info mate, it was so useful, I am now gonna go construct a team, and I am a lot less confused.

    Thanks again

Yeah, ubers are ok, but its a LOT harder to find an uber battle. Laos some others are physical sweepers-Electivire, actually there are tons. If you want to make a good team, i suggest you take a look around serebii. They have lists of the top 100 pokes in each stat, VERY uselfull for picking out sweepers and walls.

Unless you're playing in the Uber play/The Uber Metagame.....

You can't have pokemon from two completely different tiers on the same team. It just doesn't work that way. Decide on wether the team you want is revolving around ubers, or standard metagame.

I'm assuming he wants Ubers. So yeah.. But it can work. There's a thing called "Uber Set's for lower tiers." And Shiraishi once attempted an NU in Uber Play. I don't know the results. x.x

Itach, Penguin is right. Heck, even the once-godly suicune just gwets CRUSHED in ubers. Imagine throwing in a nidoqueen...just no. Mixing tiers (especially uber and UU) just makes no sense :/

Close. You can't combine two POLAR OPPISITES.

For instance, UU can work just as well as any OU-when used by skilled players. NU can even suffice in UU-depending on the player, & poke (I WILL make Sunflora work!)

But uber is a tier on its own. The only UU)NU that can work there is Shedinja. Barely. Keep N/UU OUT of Uber play.
