New to rom hacking, and I need advice on my core foundation of the rom hack im trying to create/ develop

    Hi,

    As mentioned I am completely new to rom hacking, and as my first game I am trying to be what I consider, maybe a bit too ambitious.

    The theme would be you obtaining the ability to capture Shadow Pokemon from trainers, and purifying them, as you make your way across a new region interacting with many note worthy protagonist/ antagonist in some fashion.

    As this is a core foundation of my game and I have not worked out all the details/ started rom hacking besides learning how to make maps so far I feel it makes sense to be discussing this instead of having someone help me with scripts etc.

    The main concern I have when thinking about this is how can I discern a Shadow Pokemon with a Normal Pokemon and prevent the non shadow pokemon to be captured, along with the method of purifying them.

    The main idea I have considered, so anyone chime in if you have better ideas, since compared to me you are all the experts.
    But I'd create an alternate Pokemon, say Shadow Absol, as its own entity, and then once it reach's its conditions on to be purified, you will talk to an NPC and he will gift you normal absol, with its new stats/ moves. And in the area there will be a move relearner and deleter that allows you to modify your pokemon after you obtain it.

    This would mainly be re-using old Gen 3 Daycare mechanics as the purification method.

    And the Purification Method, would be giving these shadow pokemon a base happiness between -255 and 0, and in order to purify it, it needs to be in a range of 0 - 255.
    That way I can simulate the amount of difficulty for each shadow pokemon.

    Any other alternative ideas on how to proceed with this idea is much appreciated.
     
    you could also make them evolve into the normal version with a custom evo screen saying theyve been purified once the happiness value you want has been achieved
     
    What are you going to use as base program for your game?

    Pokemon Essentials has the Shadow Pokemon implemented already as far as scripts to define them. I've not done anything like that with my games that I've made, but if you choose to go the Essentials route then I can suggest also an excellent Youtube tutorial on that, plus everything else involved with the program.
     
    Yea so after posting this ive been binging all of the Pokemon Essential Tutorials by Thundaga and finally saw how to do Shadow pokemon.
