Im not sure if this was proven disfunct but the nicknaming thing didn't work for the first time.

Nicknamed an Eevee Rainer and it evolved into Jolteon

What's the matter? You disappointed? How about this to cheer you up?
You: "Go, Rainer!"
Opp: "Hey, isn't that a Jolteon?"
You: Yeah, so?"
Opp: "The name doesn't make sense! I mean come on!"
You: "Sure it does."
Opp: "Well, I don't see it raining now!"
You: "Not yet, but it sure will be raining blood here in just a sec."
You: "Go, Rainer!"
Opp: "Hey, isn't that a Jolteon?"

The nicknames only work once, if you've already had a Vaporeon by using "Rainer" it won't work anymore, it's just a gamble for what you get now.

For regular users of this forum, this is common knowledge, it is also included in many guides.
Basically, unless you happen to catch one of the evolutions in the wild, which is very rare, it helps you fill your pokedex.
The best strategy is to get one vaporeon, and then let it go random, unless you are in a hurry to complete your pokedex. Vaporeon is so much better than the others, so if your pokedex can wait, 100% chance to hit one the first time and 33% after that is the best solution.
