I never tried doing one but here it is:

But for it being your first banner, I'd say that's a pretty good start.

sorry if this sounds insulting, but it doesn't "kinda stink"... i know you're a newb and all, but... the blur really throws it off. all you did was... make the bg gray, changed the lighting effects to a spectrum, added a lugia, and blurred it.

Right now it looks incomplete. I suggest that you
a) Shift the image to one side to provide a contrast
b) Show more of the image.

Also, I feel it could use some border.
