Diamond is the first pokemon game that I have ever wanted to be competitive in. My starter pokemon was Piplup. Anyway, I read up on some guides and I know basic strategy and information now. But, I did have a few questions regarding how to get started. First of all, should I run through the game quickly and then go back and build my team, or build as I progress. How do I select my pokemon if I haven't played since second generation? How do I know which moveset I want for my pokemon?

Lastly, can anyone point me in the direction of a guide written for 4th gen?

Thanks in advance. I'm going to bed. I'll check replies in the morning.

go to gamefaqs.com great guides for any game you can find. you should train pokemon as you go, its better for the game experience and makes the game more fun, also you learn a lot more about the pokemon in the game because you spend time training.

Piplup is definitely something you can build up along the way for serious competition; Empoleon has good elemental resistance. You're a little late though, since our tournament starts on Tuesday. Use the info here and on serebii.net to decide on your team and the most efficient way to raise them. Don't forget to ask for help in the strategies and movesets section if you feel you need assistance.

Smogon.com is the BEST site on the internet for competitive Pokemon battling fyi. But you have a lot of catching up to do if you've haven't been through Hoenn (you basically missed all the EVs, Natures, Abilities, etc. so you better make sure you catch up on those).

Are Smogon and/or NetBattle planning to update to D/P stats, moves, and mechanics? All the Advance Generation statistics are pretty much moot now that D/P is out...
