4th Gen Okay- What Is Wrong With My Breeding Methods?

I'm about to pull my hair out of my head with my breeding and how it is utterly failing as of right now.

Well the first thing that I have done, simple enough, caught a Ditto and stuffed it in the day-care and gave it what ever it needed to breed with. Got a Pichu real easy that way, all is hunky-dorie! :D
Then I try breeding anything else. First instinct- hey, breed a starter to get another! That's a no go. I guess it happens sometimes. Then I tried getting any other baby Pokemon.. nope, that's not working. Then I try breeding just for the heck of it and that's not even working!

I then do the proper thing - perfectly matching the egg groups. This has not worked once. I have no idea how something like this could even fail to be honest, but it just does not want to seem to work! I looked around for tips on breeding but it all seems set-in-stone just for getting the egg, so why might it be going awry for me?

I will say that I completely skipped the fourth generation of Pokemon save for now having Soul Silver. Did I miss some sort of major change in the breeding system? I certainly couldn't find anything by looking around online about it!
So yes I suppose any thoughts upon the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly for reading and replying.

Ive never had much success in breeding, but try getting more dittos to use. try to breed with females with the dittos. or just look around for guides.

Please use the HG/SS Help Thread next time. Honestly though, I don't think anything is wrong with your breeding methods. You probably just need to stroll and travel some more. Not all Pokémon produce eggs as fast as others. Sometimes it takes a little bit longer. Just give it a try and you'll see, it should work out fine. If you do have more questions after though, then the Help Thread is best to use.
