    Hey guys whats up. I'm an oldschool player thats been playing since red and blue came out. Got all 150 on my red, never achieved all the pokemon on Gold, or on Ruby. Stopped playing after that for a while and got in to some other games. I just picked up a Platinum copy today though and am pretty excited to get back in the game. Look foward to meeting you guys in game and playing around. I have to first throw out my newb question to get me going. Charmander was my first pokemon ever. I would love to have him from an early stage in the game and have him part of my steady roster. Will that be possible? Thank you again ahead of time for your help. :)
     
    Welcome to to the pokecommunity and yes you can get him through trade with someone else or via pal park (placing a GBA cart in the Slot 2 on your DS)

    So I have to wait to get access to Pal Park first? Or can I get him as soon as trading is available?
     
    Yes as soon as trading is available though you'll need a friend's friend code who has a charmander and the pal pad =P

    so it would be best to look into the trading forum here and ask around if anyone has a charmander up for trade as I said before people are very helpful when it comes to trading so you maybe able to get one for something common
