2nd Gen One for all or All for one

I always have a stronger leader I can always count on during hard battles (for crystal it's often the dizzy-puncher egg-pokémon from the old couple *_*), but I manage to bring all the others to equal levels...
 
I can't really remember what I did back in the day, but I think I've been leveling equally for most of the years I've been playing. I think my starter was always at least 5 levels higher in Blue and Gold.
 
I kept them all usually within 5-7 level of each other at worst, and usually had them from 1-3 levels apart at most. Sometimes I just plowed through an area or two with an extra powerful guy, in R/B/Y that was Kadabra for me. That left me playing catch-up with the others for a while...
