Opinion on competitive battling?

I guess I'm kind of a middle ground by comparison. I like battling with friends, and we all agree to keep our Pkmn at level 50 (Though we accept up to 55) because apparently that's what a tournament would be like. While being aware of Smogon's tiers, they mostly mean nothing to me. Using just a certain tier of Pokemon, to me, is boring. I find plenty of use in NU Pokemon when I battle friends, though we don't use legendaries.

It might sound shallow, but there are just certain Pokemon I would never use because of the way they look. Metagross, for instance, looks like a giant turd. I don't care how good it is, you wouldn't catch me using it, so I find alternatives. :D

Seriously, if you don't talk out your ass or insult an established member, nobody is gonna harass you. If you post stupid stuff like "subpunch blissey because it lures in ttar!" you deserved to get ridiculed.

Smogonites actually know what they are talking about and are good at battling *gasp and shudder*

Granted, there are some users who are worse than others, but not all of them are uppity 'holier than thou' users.

I pretty much agree, I have an account on smogon as well, and like you said, if you know what you're talking about and can accept criticism, it's a really informative forum.
