Path to Light and Darkness: End Game

Ecruteak, a ghostly town in the Johto area known for its two towers. Naturally the town was beautiful and full of color with the trees covered in leaves that stayed golden all year round. In autumn when the leaves fell to the ground the Kimono girls would perform outside, dancing in perfected rhythm and causing the leaves to dance along off the wind from their clothes. On the east side of town was a Breeder's shop, started by one of Johto's pokemon champions when he decided to settle down and take over the Breeding business from Goldenrod. North of that was the tower in which the legendary bird, Ho-oh was believed to reside. The west side had the Gym, ran by Morty till the very day of his death. Along with the burned tower north of the gym, the west side of Ecruteak gave off a rather mysterious and ghostly vibe, a vide that was full of history.

Danny sighed, watching the storm outside the window of an old rundown house near the Breeder's shop. He patted the shivering Mudkip in his lap as the whole house shook from the roar of thunder. He smiled at the newly hatched Mudkip, hoping to calm it while inside Danny himself was scared. After his odd welcome to Johto there had been nothing but disasters and the towns looked like that had already been in disarray from earlier conflicts. After arriving in Ecruteak he had hoped to find some sort of help but the owner of the Breeder's shop had no room for him since he was taking care of not only the pokemon in the town, but the people who had rushed to him for shelter.

A knock on the door caught the boy's attention and his Aipom hopped over beside him, giving the door a curious look. From the corner of the room a red eye peered at the door as well. A murkrow, one that had hatched around the same time as the mudkip, stood on a broken part of the wall near the ceiling.

Giving the Mudkip one last pat, Danny stood up as the door screeched open. In the doorway stood a man, an old man. Wrapped tightly about his body was a wet cloak that completely covered him from the neck down. His hair was short, a dusty brown color that had grayed from age that was now as dark as chocolate with grey spots. His face looked old as it had wrinkles about it like a man near his 80s but his voice argued his age. This man was in fact only in his late 50s and not long ago he looked only like he was in his early 40s.

"I've brought you some food. There's enough for the pokemon, too!" His voice was warmed, it even seemed to calm down the Mudkip who was following close behind Danny as he approached the man. The boy reached for the box the man was holding and smiled a little.

"Thank you. I know you're busy and all over there so I really appreciate it." Danny looked at the box then back at the man. His green eyes were full of sorrow. Danny looked down again. 'So he still hasn't heard from his son…'

"No problem. I'd best be heading back, you take care now." The man turned and headed out into the rain, bringing a hood over his face. Danny watched him go, concern for his health. The wind picked up and lighting flashed and then everything went quiet. There was another flash of lightning and Danny caught a glimpse of a giant wall of fog, or something like fog heading towards the Breeder's shop and the house he was currently standing in.

His attention turned to the man as he called out some words that the boy couldn't make out. However he got a vague idea when a group of strong looking pokemon appeared out of nowhere and rushed towards the shop. One of the pokemon, a Togekiss headed for the house and tackled Danny spending the boy flying inside. His pokemon rushed towards him ready to defend, but after some talking with the Togekiss they just ran into his arms.

A loud rumbling sound rocked the house and the Togekiss stood over Danny and his pokemon. As it got louder the boy could hear screams cutting through the air and the sound of houses being torn apart and crashing upon the ground….

"HEY!!! Get up…I said GET UP!!!" Danny groaned as he was pushed over onto his back by someone's foot. Slowly he opened his eyes and rose up to a sitting position. He yawned as he rubbed his eyes and looked up at the man now standing at the entrance to his tent. It was one of the camp leaders.

"Get your pokemon, pack your stuff and anything else you might want to bring with you and come with me…" He left with that, leaving Danny with a confused look upon his face. The boy looked around the tent, slowly getting to his feet and proceeding with getting dressed.

Life in the camp wasn't as bad as he expected it to be, but it definitely had the struggling theme to it. While he didn't have to work every day, as one of the able people in the camp he had to do his part. Most of his work was treating ill pokemon that had a chance of being saved or people. He worked quietly, preferring not to converse with many and was usually doing his 'job' most of the day. It wasn't bad though, he always had his pokemon to help.

Still food wasn't in plentiful supply and many had to wear the same pair of clothes every day. Even though they had medics and others helping people out, many were still very ill and the lack of food reduced many to walking sticks that wandered around camp. Living arrangements were poorly made due to the amount of people and the limited number of space and tents. Danny was no exception to this rule, but thanks to his Marshtomp, he had a clean water supply to use to wash his clothes and instead of eating all his food in one go he saved it in moderation to keep his health and to not go days without something to eat. His tent was also only a tent filled with 3 other people around his age, so he was lucky enough to not be squeezed in which 6 or 7 other people like others were.

After getting fully dressed and getting his pokeballs clipped to his belt the boy headed out. He didn't bring anything with him, as he didn't have much left when he entered the camp 3 years ago. Just him and his pokemon.

After a while he came upon a hill where he noticed a tent that was slightly larger than the other tents around camp. Walking in, Danny wasn't surprised to see a few others sitting at a long meeting table. He took a sit on the left side of the table, in one of the empty seats closest to the exit. He watched the few others socialize before a man entered the tent, clearing his throat to announce his arrival.

From what Danny had gathered from being at the camp was the this man was once part of the Clan of Hope that rose up in Johto years ago to stop the Dark Brotherhood and that he was quite young for his age. However, just looking at the man confirmed the horrors that Danny had heard about that time in Johto. For a twenty-one year old he had the harden stare and vibe of someone well in their 30s or 40s. Scares ran down the side of his arms and along his face. Beside him was a Raichu that had just as many scars.

Suddenly, Danny's mind went back to the boy he had met when he first arrived. The almost soulless look in his eyes and the mumbling about being a gym leader. If the teen was right he would guess that the boy was now about the leader's age. Just maybe…

"Here's the deal we lost contact with six missionaries on a food quest a few nights ago, we fear the worst, unfortunately with the people getting sick and starving we do not have time to waste, so you six will be there replacements." There was a look of disgust on his face, as if he was disappointed for angry with the fact that the connection was lost. Danny could understand though, times were rough and losing people on food missions probably wasn't acceptable to him.

"Chukapis here will give you a weapon of your choice ether a pistol or a small sword." He patted his Raichu on the head and it picked up a tray with the weapons on it and carried it around. As it near Danny he thought about which one he would take. Hmm, a gun would be helpful with range…but if I'm in a tight spot and need to reload that could definitely be a problem. On the other hand a sword requires some technique and ensures close combat…but I can probably deal with that…

The Raichu stopped in front of the boy, raising the tray in a gesture for him to pick a weapon. Calmly he reached for one of the swords on the tray and a sheath. Oddly enough the blade felt a lot lighter than he had expected but was still a bit heavy. He slid it into the sheath and then tied it on to his belt, returning his attention to the Camp Leader.

"Your first mission begins right now; you will leave the camp and search for some kind of food source. Secondly as soon as you exit the camp please split up, for reasons I will explain shortly it will be less likely to get picked off traveling in smaller groups this way they can't catch your scent." Everyone nodded, completely understanding the task given to them and the reason for splitting up.

"One last thing the wild pokemon out there have become what most people are referring to as zombies, we have several reported cases of people getting bit turning into ravage hunger craved monsters, so please do not hesitate to kill any wild pokemon or humans that act funny. In certain situations you may have to kill your own pokemon, this is the world we live in today."

That was the end of the briefing and soon Danny was walking towards the gates with the others. While doing so he eavesdropped other what some of the others muttered under their breath and kept note of it. He was hoping to nothing went wrong with the mission. After all, he did seemed to have moments of bad luck.

"If you feel yourself being followed, please do not come back here till you feel you are safe." The warning was immediately followed by the shutting and locking of the gates. Danny sighed and walked off, not bothering to waste any time in the mission he was given…

Jay stood there, unable to speak. His Sableye was looking worse, even though Gretle had stopped the bleeding, and the laugh was geting closer, closer... "I'm so sorry, Crayn. I vowed I'd protect you..." And when he was looking down, Crayn shot up at him. He was just barely scratched when a strange hooded figure darted out of nothing and swooped under him to tackle the infected Crayn.

"Quick, put it in its PokeBall!! Hurry!" Jay did as he was told. He was as confused as he was relieved. The hooded figure looked suspicious, but the laugh sounded close now, so Jay knew that he couldn't hang here for too long. "Just who are you?" Jay asked, although the man avoided that question.

"There's no time for that and not much time for your Pokemon. Quick, your only chance is to get it to the spring. The virus spreads quickly, so do it immideatley. Be careful, and try to keep pressure on the PokeBall, it won't have the strength to contain your Sableye for long..." The man sterted to carve the meat off of the Raticate while muttering to himself. "The others that abandoned you, they have suffered the same. How I know? I have told them all what I am telling you. There is still the smallest spec of light in this world of darkness..." he quieted down as he thought about the raw meat in his mouth and chewed. "Light…Righteousness…Heroics…Savior…Justice…" Jay thought that this was just a crazy guy, but then he heard the laugh again. It was eerie, and the hooded man was getting up to leave. "He who is lost...shall be reincarnated into pure darknes..." And with that, he dashed off. "Well, he did give me a food source, which is what I'm here for...and that frickin creepy laugh is gone. Well, better get back to camp." Jay rounded up all the bodies and headed back.

---------------------------------------------------

Scott held Umbreon tightly to his chest as the laughing was starting to drive him insane as it grew louder, more maniacal, and closer. He wanted to yell at the top of his lungs to stop laughing but he knew doing that would only attract more pokemon/zombies to his scent. Then suddenly Umbreon began clawing at his chest and he quickly threw him off and jumped away.

"Umbreon stop it's me Scott" Scott shouted to his pokemon, his best friend, his only family.. But it was no use Umbreon was drawing closer bearing it's fangs at him. Scott had no choice he pulled out his sword and readied it at his side as tears began dropping from his cheek. Umbreon charged straight for Scott but before he could reach him he was tackled out of mid air by a strange shaded figure in a hood and cape. Before he had any time to react the man shouted at him.

"Return it to it's pokeball now!!" The man yells as Scott doesn't seem to hesitate at all calmly returning Umbreon to it's pokeball.

"Thank you.. But who are you?" Scott asks finally calmed down.

"You do not have much time, once the virus spreads throughout your pokemon fully the pokeball won't be able to contain it… The only chance you have is taking it to the spring" The man begins to utter as he pulls out a small knife and begins carving meat off the dead raticates bones.

<Ok this guy has to be crazy… what spring is he talking about?> Scott thought to himself as the man then continued to speak.

"The other trainers who left with you, they've suffered the same fate with there pokemon… I know because I told them the same thing I'm telling you, there is still light in this darkness, it's very dim but there is light" The man utters again still chewing away at the Raticate meat.

"You mean the other's from the camp?!? Are they okay?!" Scott questions trying to get an answer but of course the man just continues to speak gibberish.

"Light…Righteousness… Heroics….Savior… Justice…" he begins uttering these words over and over again.

"What are you talking about???" Scott asked again getting frustrated with this guy all he wanted was a straight answer about this so called spring that could save his Umbreon.

"MWAHAH" The laugh returned and filled the air all around them as the hooded man began taking off.

"Wait tell me how to save my pokemon please!" Scott shouted as the man stopped and turned around.

"He who has been lost, shall return in the form of pure darkness" and with that he dashes off, and the laughing dies down.

Scott falls to both knees; his mind had just literally been beaten to a pulp…. Who had been lost, and how was he going to return? Was this some kind of prophecy? Was this man not crazy?

"Regardless of my thoughts, he did give me a food source… I guess I should go back to camp, everyone's probably starving about now" He says aloud gathering up all the raticate meat and trudging back out of the ruined city. Still so many thoughts wondering through his head now…

Miharu felt like she had been walking several hours from the weight of the Raticate meat, Flygon's zombie problem, and the prophecy that's been repeating like a broken record in Miharu's head.

He who has been lost shall return in the form of pure darkness...He who has been lost shall return in the form of pure darkness...He who has been lost shall return in the form of pure darkness...

Miharu had been obsessing about the "prophecy" since the weird man who showed Miharu about the food source had left. As such, she didn't noticed the white eyes glowing in the darkness as it followed her back to the camp.

---

Miharu sighed in relief when she caught sight of the refugee camp in front of her.

At least this is better than being attack by rabid zomcattes (Zombie Ratticates) and getting Flygon infected...

"You brought food!"

Miharu snapped her head to the sound of the voice as she saw one of the guards running towards her.

"You're needed at Scythe's tent and bring the food with you."

"Whatever," muttered Miharu before walking hurriedly towards Scythe's tent.

If I'm right, I think I know why those six mercenaries had disappeared...(1)

Miharu walked through the flap of the tent, acting as if she hadn't a care in the world before dropping the Zombcattes meat in front of Scythe's desk before plopping down in a seat next to what seems to be one of the other replacements.

Miharu noticed that they all seemed worried and that they all caried Zombcattes meat with them, which means that the cloaked man was correct.

Damn, I was hoping he was wrong because that would mean that the prophecy he stated was false. Crap.

Scythe nodded to Miharu before standing up.

"I believe that your story is the same as everyone elses' correct?" asked Scythe.

"I'm sure, though I do have a theory," said Miharu.

Scythe raised an eyebrow. "And that would be...?"

"I think that what the man said was a prophecy."

"'He who has been lost shall return in the form of pure darkness' is a prophecy, you say?" said Scythe incredulously.

"It's not a pleasantry," drawled Miharu sarcastically.

"Either way, as for your pokemon, I am sorry but were going to have to destroy them so they cannot escape and spread the virus in the camp, as for this spring we will figure out what to do come morning, go get some rest and bring your infected pokemon back to me in the morning," said Scythe before he left the tent in a hurry.

Miharu stood up and took off after him.

"Scythe!" exclaimed Miharu, running after him.

Scythe turned around and stopped, allowing Miharu to catch up to him.

"There's something about what the man said that you're not telling us, isn't there?" asked Miharu. "You seemed rush to ignore it and not taking the time to really think it through. What the **** is going on here?"

"Nothing you need to worry about," said Scythe shortly.

"The hell I don't! For some reason, there's a prophecy out there and as we all heard it, I'm going to guess it's all about us which means it is something I, we, need to worry about."

"You don't need to know and that's an order Miharu," said Scythe coldly before turning around and walking off.

"******!" called Miharu after him, before turning around and walking back to her tent.

He's worried. Does that mean that we all should be worried?

---

Miharu snapped awake, hearing the alarms and the lights go about. She reaches for her pokeballs and her small sword when Scythe voice blares out from the speakerphones.

"Attention, this is Scythe Rainer your camp leader speaking, we are having an emergency please stay in your tents and ready any weapons you have with you" Scythe shouts.

"It just can't end, can it," muttered Miharu before rushing out of her tent. She reached Scythe in front of the wall.

"What's happening now?" she asked in a not very respectful tone.

"You were followed here, they tracked your scent!" shouted Scythe as the gates were blasted down and lots of zombie, fully evolved pokemon came out of it's rubble.

People were screaming as the pokemon came in and attacked the people and the tents.

"****!" exclaimed Miharu before racing after a Tauros.

The Zombros (Zombie Tauros) had just headbutted a woman into several tents before huffing and started to charge at Miharu.

Miharu jumped over the Zombros and stabbed her sword through it's head. She pulled out the blade as where she was going to land, another Zombros was there. She cut off the other Zombros's head before landing on her feet, her sword bloody.

"That's disgusting," commented Miharu before wiping off the Zombros's blood of the sword.

Miharu ran at the woman and made sure she wasn't getting infected by the 'Zombie Disease' and sighed in relief when she found out that the woman wasn't, but than winced when Miharu noticed that the woman was dead.

"Rest in peace and find your love ones in the beyond," whispered Miharu before standing up.

Miharu wasn't religious, but she did give a prayer of farewell after someone died. It was just how she was.

Miharu watched as Scythe ran his sword through a Heracross in half before the lights turned off and everything was quiet.

I blame Scythe.

(1) She doesn't really know how the mercenaries disappeared, she only has a theory. x3 Which is that the mercenaries disappeared because they were kidnapped by the laughing voice, or they were killed by their rabid pokemon. That's her theory, which is also mine. ;)

MichaelaTheUchiha: Another great post! I enjoy how your character feels about Scythe it will make things more interesting as we move forward!

"Ugh...when is it gonna--the camp!" Jay ran to the camp, huge smile on his face. "I wonder...what did that guy mean by spring...and how long does Crayn have until...it's com--" The gates were fully open and one of the gaurds was staring him in the eye. Jay averted his gaze as he walked past the gate and into the tent.

"Lookie what I go--" It looked like everyone else that went out had Raticate meat in their hands. They all had concerned looks on their faces as they saw Jay's rattling PokeBall. "Everyone else got the meat...yay us." Jay also felt concerned for Crayn. (It's alright buddy, I'll get ya outta this mess) Jay thought as he saw the other rattling PokeBalls on the table.

"I see you were all successful in finding food for us...that's excelent!" Scythe exlaimed before everyone started telling their identicle stories.
"Hmm...He who is lost...shall return in the form...of pure darkness? What cou--no, it couldn't mean that," Scythe debated with himself as he started pacing around. "I'm sorry, but as for your Pokemon--" at this point Jay put Crayn's PokeBall on the table, completing the set, "--they will have to be destroyed, so that they cannot spread the virus any farther. And as for this spring...we will figure out what to do come morning. Now, go get some rest so that we can pick it up tomorrow morning. Bring those, too." He finished by pointing at the six PokeBalls on the table, and then slowly walked away.

"Well...let's all go get some rest," Jay said as he led the party out of the tent, grabbing Crayn on the way. "I'll fix ya, buddy. You survived it once and you can do it again." And when he got back to the tent, he held Crayn's PokeBall in his arms as he fell asleep.

"Attention. This is Scythe Rainer, your camp leader, speaking. We have an emergency on camp grounds, so everybody stay in your tents and ready any weapons you have." The intercom blasted and fully woke Jay up. As if that wasn't enough, they turned on the lights, almost blinding him. "Alright, guys," said Jay as he dashed out of the tent, "it's time to whoop some..." He saw the gates vibrating, the others that had infected Pokemon flying towards Scythe. Jay did the same, and when he got there, Scythe was saying, "They tracked the scent, there are giant zombie Pokemon right out there, all because of the Raticate. You--" the gates were blasted open, taking one of the gaurds with them.

"Alright, guys, now it's time to whoop some ass!" Jay saw the giant Nidoking heading for Alicia's friend's tent, and now it was personal. "Alright, Gretle, c'mon out with Psychic! Leigh, you with Ice Beam!" The Kirlia took hold of the Nidoking and slammed it against the wall a few times before the Mawile used Ice Beam on it, freezing it, and then Gretle finished it by throwing him against the wall. Jay ran up to it with the scimitar. "This is for everything you frickin little zombies have and will put me through!" But as he struck, he saw a look of genuine fear in the eyes of the huge beast. Jay was confused as he left the dead body lay, and went in to see if Alicia's friend was alright...but she wasn't. Something with a horn or fangs had run her through..."No...argh!" He dragged her body outside, and he saw bodies and living people being dragged off, dead bodies spread around, and Scythe had run through a Heracross.

Then everything went dark.

"Crap!" yelled Buck, looking down at his Pokemon. "Don't worry, Whips, I'll get you out of here…" But he knew it was hopeless. Whips had a one way ticket to hell and Buck knew he couldn't do anything about it. Buck looked around him, at the dead Raticate, the exploded bike wheels and his bleak surroundings...what a horrible place to die in.

"Meh he he he he he…" the dark, evil laugh sounded again, but closer this time. Who - or what - ever it was was coming at him. Angrily, Buck drew his pistol and stood determinedly, waiting for his foe to appear. A ghastly noise sounded behind him, like a wounded creature, and Buck's thoughts flicked to poor Whips. The cry turned into a deep, gurgling growl and he remembered too late about the infection spreading through the Victreebel.

Buck turned to finish the Pokemon before it became a danger, but he was too late. He turned to find Whips launching itself at him through the air, blood spurting from the sickly looking bite. It's veins were showing clearly, it was sweating hard and there was a dark, disturbing look in it's eyes that Buck had never seen before. With a yelp he was thrown to the ground and winded as Whips gave a shrill, triumphant cry. It moved in for the kill, Buck closed his eyes…

…and heard something crash into Whips and knock it off his chest. Buck sat up, gasping for air, and looked for his savior. A man in a black hooded cloak was wrestling with Whips, armed with a small knife.

Desperately, the man looked at Buck and shouted, "Return it to it's Pokeball, now!" Buck didn't hesitate and sucked the ravaged Whips back into it's ball. He clipped the jerking ball to his belt and looked at the man with a weary caution.

"Who are you?" Buck asked, wondering if this man was a friend. Sure, he had saved him, but in today's apocalyptic world he could just as well be as savage as the Raticate earlier. The figure bent and began to carve meat off of the dead rat Pokemon with his small knife.

"You do not have much time," he said, ignoring Buck's question. "Once the virus spreads throughout your Pokemon fully, the Pokeball won't be able to contain it. The only chance you have is taking it to the spring." He seemed to be blubbering like some kind of nut. 'Great,' Buck thought,' The one person who might be able to actually help me is some kind of bloody psycho!'

"Look, mate - " began Buck, but the man shushed him with a wave of his hand.

"The other trainers who left with you, they've suffered the same fate with their Pokemon. I know this because I told them the same thing I'm telling you. There is still light in this darkness. Yes, it's very dim, but there is light." He pulled the rest of the meat off of the Raticate, dumped it and moved on to the next one, which was lying in a pool of it's own blood.

"Light…Righteousness…Heroics…Savior…Justice…" the man muttered. "Light…Righteousness…Heroics…Savior… Justice…Light…Righteousness…Heroics…Savior…Justice…" The same words, over and over again. "You alright?" questioned Buck, but the man didn't listen. He finished with the next Raticate but left the other one, who was too burnt from the tyre explosion to be of any use.

"Mwa ha ha ha ha ha…!" The laugh sounded again, even closer. The man stood up and put the meat in the bag with a panicked look on his face, then unceremoniously threw the bag at Buck and began to ran away. Buck smiled at the bag as he put it in his backpack. Then the man said something Buck would never forget.

"He who has been lost, shall return in the form of pure darkness." The words rang through the dim city and then the man was gone, his hood trailing behind him. The laugh died of abruptly and Buck was left all alone in the creepy atmosphere. With nothing left to wait for, he turned and started running. Running from fear. Running for home.

IceFireLightning: Good post! Now you gotta wait till everyone catches up, then i'll post the following chapter!
PerfectMonster: Great post! I def could feel how Buck felt! Now move on!
