It really depends on the rest of your team, if you use a physical, you have to have some Special attackers to take out counters that either outspeed physical variant, or take physical hits really well. (now that dugtrio is in UU, best watch out if you build a UU team with Charizard)

and vice versa if you decide to use a special variant,
best idea in building a team, pick a pokemon then pick pokemon to take care of its weaknesses and other members weaknesses.
All in all, build a team, then post your team in the Strategies and Movesets section to be fine tuned by D_A and others

Typically, physical Charizard is more common because of Belly Drum and its lackluster special moveset.

I perfer a special charzard for heat wave and other special attacks. I really like charzard but I don't use him much because he is so weak to stealth rock, just sending him out when stealth rock is out will take half his hp away.

bellyzard is quite the force to reckon with....that is..if u get to set up and all

sp atk charizard is good too but physical is usually preferred

then there is the mix charizard, i've never seen it used so i would say it is not very common..it is rather effective though

Charizard can work well with both as it has belly drum ( for physical) and good special attack stat and some good special attacks to use (for special). It ultimately depends on you. Its your choice.
