Introduction

The idea behind this team is that I REALLY wanted to use Houndoom in OU. He's my Favourite Poke, and I'll be damned if I can't make him work, and WELL on an OU team.

I'm not a particularly experienced competitive battler, so a lot of metagame slips past me, as well as specifics as far as damage percentages (what's expected to OHKO, 2HKO etc.), but I think I've basically grasped the concepts now.

The Team:

Aerodactyl @ Focus Sash
Jolly
Pressure
4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
-
For a Lead, I really wanted something that has a primary goal of stopping anything from setting up a Stealth Rock. I decided on Aerodactyl as it outspeeds basically any other suicide lead. Taunt is obviously to stop the setup. Earthquake and Rockslide to deal heavy damage and take out other suicide leads, once the threat of SR is out of the way. In the case they attack first instead of setting up, and I feel I can't deal significant damage with EQ or Slide, I set up my own rocks before going down. Still not sold on this as the best lead. Really looking for the most reliable anti lead possible.

Cresselia @ Heat Rock
Bold

- Light Screen
-
I wanted to try a sunny day team in OU, so I could get both grass and fighting moves on my houndoom, my favourite poke, and let him get a nasty sweep in OU. Moonlight is Boosted by Sunny day, so naturally that gives cresselia a good defensive setup. Lightscreen both lets me absorb physical attacks better, AND neuter the ever present threat of pursuit. I decided to round off the set with toxic, because with such a defensive setup, it should be easy to stall out opposing pokemon and force switches.

- HP Fighting

This guy is my primary Sweeper. I like being able to run Solar Beam to hit bulky waters hard, as well as HP fighting to hurt Ttar (and give a decent hit on switch in heatran) Thinking scarf to outrun as much as I can (scarfed counters/DDers, mainly), or expert belt to add that little bit of a boost on super effective hits, as well as give me freedom to choose my moves.

-
I decided that because of this team's horrible Stealthrock weakness, I needed a rapid spinner. I was thinking a CB donphan with a spin tacked on at first, but once again, to take advantage of a Nasty Plot Pass by Togekiss, I decided on starmie. I'm running BoltBeam instead of Bolt and surf because the power hit surf takes in the sun. However, I'm considering running Bolt/

- U-Turn
-
Infernape is my Physical Sweeper and wall counter. I am running a physically based mixape, so that I can cover my lacking physical attacks, yet he also appreciates a passed nasty plot from togekiss.

Togekiss @ Leftovers
Timid
Serene Grace
252 HP / 64 SpD / 192 Spe
- Air Slash
- Nasty Plot
- Baton Pass
- Wish
-
I decided since Houndoom has missed out on good old fashioned Nasty Plot in exchange for his coverage, I'd stick a plot passer into the team. Seeing as Togekiss isn't the fastest of pokes, and most switch ins are probably going to outspeed him (as they will be trying to avoid flinch lock) I am thinking perhaps Roost would be a better choice over wish, as Togekiss will most likely be absorbing the hit for the pokemon he's switching into on a tradeout anyways. For this same reason, I'm thinking perhaps I shouldn't be running speed EVS at all, and instead, run a spread that covers defences more. Thoughts? but that completely defeats the purpose of having a flinching attack, and hence would make air slash a wasted move, and therefore it would have to be substituted for something else.

Looks fine. Stone Edge or Ice Fang should go over Rock Slide, Aerodactyl kinda needs to be doing as much damage as possible before going out.

Tyranitar > this, even with Reflect. You won't be able to do anything to it, and it'll ruin Sunny Day for you. You might want another Sunny Day user too if Houndoom is going to be your main attacking force.

Houndoom @ Choice Scarf/expert Belt?

This one looks tricky. Choice Scarf gives it good speed, but limits it to one attack. People will soon realize that you're trying to set up for SolarBeam, and they can easily counter this. On the other hand, Expert Belt gives you a boost without limiting you. Unfortunately, Houndoom is weak to some of the most common attacking types (Ground and Rock), and has virtually no defense to back anything up. Its speed is alright, but too many things outrun it without the Scarf =| I would use Will-o-Wisp instead of SolarBeam and run Expert Belt, just so you could cripple something, such as a wall or a physical sweeper.

Looks alright. Dunno what your last sentence was supposed to say though. Just a tip though, adding Choice Scarf allows you to outspeed and OHKO a +1 Gyarados, who would otherwise give this team many problems.

Looks good. Grass Knot could still go over U-Turn to cover Swampert and any Bulky Waters under about 40%, but either way works I guess.

You're trying to fuse two sets - flinch hax and baton passing. Choose whichever one you would rather have and work towards that. I would use Wish and no speed, but that's just me =|

Thanks in advance for opinions.

Your team is Gyarados and Kingdra weak =|

Houndoom wants Speed passed to it and Nasty Plot >> Solar Beam @ Life Orb. Solar Beam is really eh. :/ and with a choice scarf it wont be sweeping and will thus be counter productive to the aim of this team, which unless i misunderstood WAS to sweep with Houndoom.

Cess is garbage in general without Reflect, Pursuit bait. Infact id probably replace it because it isnt doing anything for this team.

Lack of priority, lack of checks or revenge killers and lack of resistances make this really meh. I mean, things like SD Lucario, SD Scizor, Salamence, Tyranitar (especially the DDer), Latias amongst various other top 20 pokes pretty much sweeps you easily. Also without Surf on Starmie you are Infernape weak. ._.

Bliss can also cripple and wall pretty much everything.

https://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=168147 <--Use this, it really is helpful.

Basically, it needs a MAJOR revamp to be not metagame weak.

Thanks for the replies guys, it's been really helpful. I've tried a revamp of the team along with a threats list. Played down the hurt that stealth rock puts on me, and I've tried harder to just ignore it. I've gone for bulkier pokes with a bit more synergy, though the one thing the team DOES lack is recovery past Vap's wish passing, and the various absorbs (Water on Vap, and Volt on Jolt, should I end up using him) Hope this one is a bit more worth your time!

Heatran to lead and set up stealth rock, to at least even the playing field. The fear of retribution from a ScarfTran should let me set up stealth rocks most of the time, without fear of taunt. Shuca berry to help survive ground moves that my opposition will try to KO him with, and then I can either switch out to explode later, or if I'm faster, explode to hopefully take my opposition with me.

Revamped my Doom. Using metalkid's damage calculator, a non-danced bullet punch from scizor would be very safe for my houndoom to switch in on, despite his abysmal defences, doing 24.40% - 28.87% damage, but that seems hideously understated, even though it is resisted, given the sheer power of scizor, and the absolutely sucky physical defence of Houndoom, so I assume I've calculated this wrong. Can somebody please confirm for me? Fire Blast for strong stab hitting steels hard. Dark pulse hits psychics like Azelf (who this guy freely switches in on, immune to both psychic AND fireblast) however, having NO pokes weak to psychic OR fire type attacks, I doubt I will often get to take full advantage of Houndoom's immunities. Bulkier Passer, with additional option of having the ability to pass lightscreen to my sweepers, allowing easier switchins and setups on spec sweepers. The alternative option being Roost to add survivability, coverage for it's SR weak, and the ability to dodge rock attacks coming my way. I just feel a bit uneasy about having Zapdos AND Vap as completely dedicated passers, and therefore losing team type coverage because of it. With houndoom being so frail, and nothing provoking psychic or fire attacks for him to switch in on, the loss of shadow ball from Jolts seems like I'm leaving myself open to ghosts and psychics.

Rhyperior @ Life Orb

- Swords Dance
-

Good target for Agility Pass, Rhyperior is a very bulky sweeper, who with a bit of speed, could give teams some real grief. Meant to come out later in the game once speedy yet fragile revenge killers like Starmie have been dealt with, Rhyperior works possibly a bit better with zapdos than jolteon, resisting stone moves that are meant for the bird. If I'm expecting an ice move to come at me, chances are I'll be able to switch to Vap to stick a sub up. Assuming the ice user is banded, this gives me plenty of time to switch over to rhyperior, whereas, if he's not banded and carrying bolt as well, I can get a free pass to the bulky sweeper anyways, who should survive an ice hit, thanks to Solid Rock.

Threat List:
May not be quite right, but it's my evaluation based on what I've read more than what I've faced. If anything is wrong, and something is a bigger threat than I've labelled it, please alert me to it!

Big Threat
Average Threat

Low Threat

Azelf: Tran Resists basically everything zelf can throw at him, houndoom disreguards everything bar explosion. Jolt is also faster than non-scarfed variants, and hits hard with Shadowball
Breloom: Houndoom doesn't like the powerful fighting attacks at all, but can hit hard with fireblast on any set not carrying mach punch, as it outspeeds breloom. Starmie can also harass with icebeam, but both these counter's are shaky thanks to a weakness to one of breloom's STABS, and that thing has sky high attack

Celebi:
Houndoom is a Great Celebi counter. Resisting most of its attacks, and hitting hard with both its STABS. All it really cares about is thunder wave.

Dugtrio:
Nasty little thing can easily trap Houndoom or Heatran for the kill. If the latter still has its berry intact, it can esplode on trio for a nasty surprise, and basically any other poke on the team can take it if they get the drop, but chances are it's going to take one of my fire types with it.

Electivire:
Rhyperior laughs in the face of physical sets, Special sets are set up on by zappy, and then the speed boosts can be passed to rhyperior for the kill, or heatran if he's still around.

Empoleon: Zapdos can tank it, and hits hard with Tbolt. Starmie can Venge Kill, and rhyperior, houndoom and heatran can all hit it supereffective on the switchin.

Flygon:
Starmie hits hard with icebeam. That's about it really. If heatran can manage to explode on it, then that's an option. This thing could cause my team quite the greifing.

Gengar: Houndoom doesn't mind gengar TOO much, if he can switch in on an attack he resists. If he switches into one of vap's subs, or zappy's agi boosts, he shouldn't have much trouble, or on a resisted move played through a choice band (HP Ice seems most likely, I don't see any reason someone would be actually using HP fire against this team..) but a shadowball aimed at starmie is also likely.

Gliscor:
Ice Beam from Starmie Once again. Starting to get concerned about how many OU Pokes I'm relying on Starmie to Revenge Kill. Perhaps I should also run Surf or Icebeam on Vap over Toxic.

Gyarados:
Tbolt from Starmie or Zap/Jolt. Starmie and Jolt should Outspeed after 1 DD. Vap can also wall, and pass a sub to rhyperior to hit with a vicious stone edge.

Heatran:
Rhyperior hits this hard with EQ, Starmie with Surf, after a plot up, HP fighting from doom should deal reasonable damage as well.

Heracross: Does not much like Fireblast from Houndoom, though he can hit him very hard in retaliation. Honestly the team is very heracross weak all in all.

Infernape:
Earthquake from Rhyperior drops the monkey fast, Surf from starmie as well. Heatran can also deal good damage with earth power, but has to watch out for earthquake in retaliation.

Jiraichi: Heatran counters this well, dropping it with STAB fire blast and resisting most of its moves. The same goes for houndoom, but he fears the hitback a lot more. Rhyperior's earthquake is a nasty hit as well, and can easily switch in on a banded Jiraichi's thunder punch meant for starmie or vap.

Kingdra: I Hate this thing... the best I can manage is to let it set up on vap, and toxic stall it out, passing to zappy when behind subs to net speed boosts or lightscreen to nerf the power of draco meteor, when I feel it's safe.

Latias: This thing is another problem... All I really have is toxic stall with vap, and switch into houndoom and start plotting up behind a sub, if latias starts trying to set up. This is shaky at best.

Lucario:
Hard to give a definitive lucario counter. Rhyperior can hopefully tank a physical set, and KO with EQ. Lead Lucario hit's Heatran hard, but fears the retaliation of a fire blast. Given a speed boost, Houndoom can also take out non-banded lucario, but chances are he'll get a swords dance on the switch, and there's the ever present fear of stone edge, which Zappy attracts anyways. Starmie can revenge kill with boosted surf, if lucario has taken prior damage from a face off. This puppy is still a big danger.

Machamp: eam overall is pretty machamp weak, really, this is a prime target to be sploded on by heatran.

Magnezone:
If this thing want's heatran, it will get it. Especially if it's scarfed. Though if shuca berry is still around, heatran may be able to resist a quake and turn the tables on zone. Rhyperior really doesn't care about it at all, and can net a neat little swords dance off the switch out, and with an agi boost, houndoom should be able to take even a scarfed zone down with a STAB fireblast before it can say "earthquake". Supposing the blast doesn't miss.

Mamoswine:
Houndoom outspeeds, and can hurt with fireblast quite severely, especially considering its lousy SpD, it also dislikes earthquake from Rhy quite severely.

Metagross: Earthquake, Fireblast, The usual suspects. Though I think both rhyperior and houndoom fear a good solid hit from this thing. Overall a fairly substantial threat.

Porygon-Z
: HP Fighting might do decent damage from a plotted up houndoom, but chances are I'm going to rely on Starmie to revenge kill this thing. That or Explode Heatran on it.

Rhyperior: Doesn't Like a surf from Starmie, not one bit. Or a Grass Knot for that matter. But if starmie faints, all I really have is HP fighting on houndoom, which is only really useful if rhy has taken significant previous damage.

Rotom-A: Haha... Dark Pulse from Houndoom, that's about it. On the plus side, he resists the special attacks of the most common rotom formes, Cut and Heat

Salamence: Starmie's Ice beam... I'm starting to see a common Dragon Type weakness in this team...

Scizor: Fire blast from either Houndoom or heatran can do it. That's assuming houndoom can survive its bullet punch. Starmie can revenge kill it, vap and zap both resist basically everything it can throw at them. Though vap can't do anything but twiddle its fingers and set up on it.

Snorlax: set up on it and take it out with rhyperior... but behind a sub, cause chances are he's gonna take status to the face.

Starmie: Starmie... also Zappy gives it some greif, but has to watch out for ice beams. Roost off the first attack and hit back with thunderbolt

Suicune: Zappy, again. Starmie hits it hard with grass knot, with the added bonus of not taking too hard a hit from any of its attacks, bar HP Electric. Vap also effortlessly walls sets lackng HP electric. Suicune also fears Zappy.

Togekiss: Zappy's most likely going to make this thing run, which means it can set up and pass speed to rhyperior. Something that togekiss isn't really going to want to come back to say hi to after a speed boost. Once again starmie can venge kill it (I'm starting to love starmie).

Tyranitar: STAB Earthquake from rhyperior should see him going down fast. Vap can stall him reasonably well, and he doesn't particularly like HP Fighting from Houndoom. Starmie is a great revenge killer for him, but none of these guys really want to switch into his attacks. I'm probably going to have to sacrifice something to this monster and get rhyperior on the job.

Weavile: Houndoom owns this, as long as it can avoid a brick break. Heatran can wall it effortlessly and hit it for the kill with earth power or fireblast.

Yanmega: Stealth Rock, most things hit this supereffective as well...

Zapdos: Rhyperior just has to watch out for HP Grass, but zapdos will not like its stone edge one bit. Can be revenge killed by starmie, assuming it has some decent damage on it.

After an Eval of metagame, I'm thinking definitely zappy over Jolt, his coverage is a LOT better, and I'm also thinking of replacing the Heatran I'm leading with with a metagross something like this:

Metagross @ Occa Berry
Adamant
Flash Fire
252 HP / 236 SAtk / 12 Def / 8 Spe
- Bullet Punch
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Explosion
-
Because it attracts fire attacks for houndoom to switch into, and is neutral to fighting.

Also dropping to one dedicated passer. Either Vap for the big subs and wishes, or Zappy for the speed boost. If I just carry Vap, I might make Zappy into an offensive sweeper. If I drop vap for zappy as my only passer, I will use Vap with a standard Wish support build.

Thanks again guys, I hope this team is more refined.
