special sweeper uses special type attacks suck as ice beam and thunderbolt. (starmie is a good example.
physical sweeper runs physical attacks such as avalanche and thunder fang.
tank stays alive as long as possible and absorbs hits. good examples are milotic and skarmory and run moves like toxic and rest.
those are the main roles. there are other minor ones like annoyer/drainer/baton passer. hope i helped a little.

Might I add to that? Most Sweepers also have a substantial speed stat.
