Here you can discuss the love of Pokémon Contests- What you like and why! Here are some guidelines for those of you unfamiliar with it:

    Pokémon Contests in the Games

Pokémon Contests were introduced in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. To enter, a trainer must go to one of the four contest halls in Hoenn, located in Verdanturf Town, Fallarbor Town, Slateport City, and Lilycove City. In Pokémon Emerald, however, three contest halls are replaced by Battle Tents, and so all contests occur in Lilycove City.

There are five categories that a Pokémon can be entered into:

    -Beauty
    -Cute
    -Cool
    -Tough
    -Smart

In order to impress the audience in the first round, the trainer must use a special type of candy, called Pokéblocks, on the participating Pokémon, in order to raise the points of the category it will be entered into.

There are four ranks of contests:

    1. Normal Rank (Verdanturf Town)
    2. Super Rank (Fallarbor Town)
    3. Hyper Rank (Slateport City)
    4. Master Rank (Lilycove City)

(As noted above, all contests are in Lilycove City in Pokémon Emerald.)

In order to enter Normal Rank contests, one must first get a Contest Pass in Verdanturf Town (Ruby/Sapphire). The Contest Pass is not required in Emerald, only a Pokéblock Case from Lilycove. To enter contests in the other Ranks, the participating Pokémon must obtain a ribbon by winning the contest of the selected category in the previous rank.

    Sequence of Events

    1. Audience Voting: The Pokémon is shown to the audience, who then vote on their favourite. Pokémon with good stats in the selected category will gain more points here.
    2. Appeals: There are five rounds, where each Pokémon attempts to impress the judge with an attack. Using a good combination will gain the Pokémon higher appeal points, but using the same attack twice will lose the Pokémon points. Some moves also affect the other Pokémon, for example by making them too nervous to attack.
    3. Results: The results of both rounds are shown. The one with the highest points will then win a ribbon. If it already has a ribbon for that particular rank and category, then it will win an item.

Pokémon Contests in the Pokémon Anime

Pokémon Contests in the anime are different to the contests in the game. First, the system of Ranks and Categories is not present, although some contests require the participants to have a certain number of ribbons. For example, an R1 contest requires the trainer to already have one ribbon. Unlike regular gym battles, Pokémon Contests are recurring events rather than always occurring.

There are also more contest Halls in Hoenn. Eight are seen in the animé, located in these places:

    1. Rustboro City
    2. Slateport City
    3. Verdanturf Town
    4. Fallarbor Town
    5. Rubello Town
    6. Lilycove City
    7. Izabe Island
    8. Pacifidlog Town

After winning five ribbons, a Coordinator can qualify for the Grand Festival, (the contest equivalent of the League Tournaments,) which takes place in Slateport City.

In the animé plot, May was originally going to challenge Gym Leaders with Ash. However, after seeing a contest in Rustboro City, she decides to enter contests instead. She enters contests throughout Hoenn, until she qualifies for the Grand Festival, which takes place shortly before the Hoenn League Tournament.

Contest halls are also present in Kanto and follow the same idea as before. There are also contest Halls in Kanto. Four are seen in the animé so far, located in these places:

    1. Saffron City
    2. Silver Town
    3. Modama Town
    4. Yuzuriha City

Pokémon Contests in Hoenn are hosted by Vivian Meridian. A judging panel of three - Contesta, Sukizoand Nurse Joy are to score a Pokémon Coordinator's appeals out of 10 (a .5 score may be given). In the Kanto region, the MC for Pokémon Contests is Lilian Meridian, Vivian's sister.

    Sequence of Events

    1. Every Coordinator uses a Pokémon to appeal. Three judges each give it a score out of 10.

    2. The four Coordinator's that make the best appeals go into the semi-final, in the form of a rated Pokémon battle. The battle has a time limit, which is 5 minutes. Each coordinator starts their battle with a predetermined amount of points. If the Pokémon's attack fails, is not done gracefully or if the Pokémon is attacked by its opponent, then the cordinator will lose points. If the points hit 0 or if the coordinator has less points than his/her opponent when time runs out, then the coordinator will lose. If a coordinator knocks out the opponent's Pokémon, then he/she will automatically win.

    3. The final is the same as the semi-final. The winner of this gets the ribbon.

    Pokémon Coordinator

A Pokémon Coordinator is a person who regularly participates in a Pokémon Contest in different cities. To be a Pokémon Coordinator, one needs a Pokémon, some skill at being a Coordinator, Pokéblocks, and a Contest Pass and/or ribbon(s).

Here are some famous Pokémon Coordinators you can talk about:

May: When the group reach Rustboro City, May decides that instead of collecting gym badges, she's going to dedicate her efforts completely to Pokémon Contests. Since then she has won several ribbons in most of the Contest halls she traveled to. May has a rivalry with a Pokémon coordinator named Drew (or Shū in Japanese) who appears at every other contest that May participates in, similar to the rivalry Ash shared with Gary Oak. Initially May and Drew don't get along, but eventually they come to bond and become friends during the Grand Festival, where they both lose. In the Japanese series, May briefly mentions a powerful trainer named Cerec admiringly. Cerec has yet to appear, but is rumored to be a character in an upcoming movie.

May entered every contest shown in the Anime so far, and manages to make it to high ranks in the Grand Festivals.

Drew: In the Pokémon anime, Drew (known as Shū in Japan) is a Pokémon Coordinator who is the evil rival of May (Haruka in Japan). Drew has green hair, and wears pale green pants, a black shirt, and a purple vest. Drew first appears one-quarter of the way through the Hoenn story arc in the episode "Now That's Flower Power!", competing against May in the Slateport City Contest. He is established as already being a Coordinator of some prominence, and quickly establishes a rivalry with May. He is initially mean to May, insulting both her Pokémon and her skill as a Coordinator. This in some ways parallels Ash Ketchum's rivalry with Gary Oak, but Drew has no prior history with May, and the two are already on somewhat unfriendly terms by the next episode. Drew continues to show some antagonism toward May in his later appearances, but this seems to be an effort to drive her to compete harder and improve her skills, rather than actual malice. On several occasions, he gives May a rose, but claims that it is for her Beautifly. In the Grand Festival, the championship competition for Coordinators, Drew defeats May in the quarterfinals, but loses to the defending champion Robert in the final round. By this point, Drew and May were roughly established to be friends as well as rivals. But at the Hoenn League, he shows his true colors when he tries to kidnap the Trainers' Pokémon. May stops him. After that, Drew disappeared, and has not been seen since then.

Drew enters various Pokémon Contests and is supposed to be one of the legendary Coordinators, having his own fan club chase him down the streets wherever he goes. He wins most contests.

Harley: He has long purple hair, and wears cloths similar to design of a Cacturne. He is a Pokemon Coordinator, who holds a grudge against May because she said that his cookie are not half bad. He pretends to be May's friends at times, but it is only part of his schemes to defeat May in Pokemon Contests. Actually, Harley is a villain, assorted with Team Rocket to defeat May and Ash. Harley first competed against May in A Cacturne for the Worse!. When the two Coordinators met, Harley was annoyed at May for several reasons because she was not familiar with his Cacturne, she called Cacturne "scary," and she spoke as if she was unsure of her statements, specifically regarding cookies Harley offered her. Later, the two competed in a Contest, Harley using Cacturne and May using Bulbasaur. In an attempt to publicly humiliate May, Harley played a recording of Max recalling a time when May was younger and she became stuck in water with a swarm of Tentacool and was extremely frightened. May was embarrassed, but went on to defeat Harley.

Months later, Harley and May met up again in the episodes Hi Ho Silver Wind!, Deceit and Assist!, and Rhapsody in Drew!. Harley pretended that he was friends with May, and she initially believed him. He gave her "advice" to have her Skitty use its Assist move repeatedly to make a good appeal; this resulted in Skitty becoming confused after using Bulbasaur's Petal Dance, having to Doubleslap itself out of confusion. Meanwhile, Drew watched Harley, noticing how he tricked May. Later, May realized Harley's ploy, and soon the two were to battle once again. This time, it was Harley's Cacturne and Banette versus May's Beautifly and Bulbasaur. May won this battle as well, and progressed further into the tournament. Harley tended to use nicknames for May behind her back. The first was Meno-chan (English equivalent: Miss Tent) after embarrassing her with the Tentacool story. The second was Kamo-chan, referring to the word often used at the end of May's sentences in Japanese that can imply unsureness.

Harley has a rather peculiar personality. His mannerisms, which include wiggling his hips as he walks, using あたし atashi, the Japanese feminine version of I, and admiring James dressed as Norman suggest that he may be homosexual. Whether this is the case or not, he is undeniably flamboyant, wearing an outfit similar in appearance to Cacturne. He also has a tendency to use select English words intermixed with his normal Japanese speech; for example, he calls Cacturne and Banette my buddies and tells May good morning. The way that he makes facial impressions can also depict that he's gothic (although they never mention these facts). Needs to get a grip because even the slightest problems can make him want to kill a person for life, like cookies and octopus. As evidenced by his Contest performances, Harley extremely scheming, and will attempt to trick or ruin his opponent in order to win. Harley enters Contests in Purika Town, the Hoenn Grand Festival and most of the Contests in Kanto, battling May everytime.

Jessie: Jessie (Japanese: ムサシ Musashi) is one half of of the Team Rocket duo that follows around May and her friends in the Pokémon Anime.

Sometime before joining Team Rocket, and it is not known when, Jessie obtained a Contest Pass in the Hoenn region. Also during the years before Team Rocket, she had several boyfriends, all of whom left her and/or treated her badly. She enjoys using James' Pokémon and Meowth to enter Contests whenever she runs out of her own or has an idea.

Although she does exceptionally well in the Appeal Round (usually getting higher points than anybody in the first round, like 29.7, 28.4, or even a perfect score in Lilycove City) and the Battle Round (she wins battles, even though they're shown in split moments where she stands there and the opponent goes down automatically), whenever she goes up against May or the other main Coordinator of the show, she goes down from their Pokémon. She apparently fights dirty in Contests, with examples from when her Dustox wore a machine that generated rainbow-colored attacks so she could make good appeals, when she gave Meowth extra costumes so that he could transform into fakes to impress the judges, or when she took Anthony's Contest Ribbons and Contest Pass in the Hoenn Grand Festival so that she could disguise herself as him, attempting to use a stolen pass (she attempted the same with the legendary coordinator Robert). In addition to this, she disguises herself as models or other fashions under fake names such as "Jessica", "Jessifina", or "The Jesster".

There are many other Coordinators out there. Remember that this is the Pokémon Contest and Coordinator Fan Club, so discuss everything about them here, including what you like, dislike and want to improve, or your past experiences with them!

Here are some rules to keep the order here:

    1. Don't talk bad about Contests.
There are a lot of people out there that prefer battles more than Contests, and say that it should be removed. You have the right to keep that opinion, but keep it somewhere else. But if you're one that wants to improve the system, then go free and make ideas here.

    2. Don't SPAM or Doublepost about another concept.
If you're going to be talking about another kind of concept in Pokémon here, then make it relate to the Pokémon Contest at hand. For example, if you're going to be talking about battles, compare it to contests.
Art- think of the sketching when you win the Master Rank or something.
Shipping- Make it about Contests, like ContestShipping, TensionShipping, or RocketShipping!

    3. Have fun!
Pokémon Contests were developed so that you can have fun, so you better not come here with a sad face or it's going to cost you $10!
