Pokémon Different - A rom hack that is a bit Different™

Pokémon Different is a basic Fire Red rom hack that my friend and I created. It took about four years to make.

Just to be clear, this is not some game that is set in a new region, It's the same old experience as the normal Pokémon Fire Red just with Different™, well made, new and original fakemons, tons of references to pop culture, Different™ medias, and many more.
Also, many well known characters have a cameo in the game as a gym leader or a professor of some sort.

We've put a lot of effort into making these fakemons and this game in general. And I think we've made a pretty good job of giving a new, Different™, fresh take on the Fire Red experience.
So If your looking for a fresh and blind Pokémon Fire Red expirience, while having a laugh once in a while, then this game is for you!

The game is pretty hard and could be an asshole sometimes, so If you are a Nuzlocke lover, I challange you to beat it.
Imagine nuzlocking a hard game when you don't even know the types or move sets of the Pokémon.
And for anyone who's looking for a casual play, don't worry, the game is not too hard for a normal playthrough. It only gets difficult towards the end-game.

WARNING!

The game is pretty much a parody for Fire Red that was made for our friends, but i'd figured out that It would be great to share the game with you.
This means that the game wasn't made with the "Internet" in mind, so I'm afraid some people will find the jokes a bit offensive.
( Just to be clear, there is NO 18+ content in the game. That's toooo much man!)
So if jokes like Hitler as a nurse, or Pixelated blood turn you off, then We're afraid this game isn't for you. BUT! If you'd stick around, and still play the game while ignoring these jokes,
then we offer you a very well made roster of Fakemon to choose from.

Let's address this before I talk further: There's two very offensive slurs in the game, one racist and one homophobic. I'm gay and found the homophobic slur funny, but your mileage will vary. That slur is only displayed one time. The racist slur is attached to a Pokémon and displays throughout the game. It goes away when you evolve it, but lots of trainers have the un-evolved Pokémon and it's a wild encounter in a lot of places. It's... not great. It severely limits who I can recommend this romhack to.

Now that that's out of the way: I love this hack. It's such dumb fun, and occasionally smart fun. The Phosyun<->Fosyun mechanic is brilliant. The level/difficulty curve is perfect (Viridian Gym is a big step up in difficulty, but that just means you need to go to One Island first). The jokes are always entertaining (to me at least) whether they're genuinely weird/clever or lame eye-rollers. The humor in this hack is for a particular type of person. The only way to know if it's for you is to try it for yourself. However, only about half of the text in the game is changed with the other half remaining vanilla. This unfortunately includes some major things like Rival fights.

Pokémon Different™ doesn't have any of the quality-of-life features you'd expect in modern romhacks so be aware of that before you jump in. That means:

• No DexNav
• No running indoors
• No methods for getting desired IVs/Abilities outside of breeding (FRLG breeding can only be accessed after beating the Elite Four)
• No extra move tutors, existing move tutors were not changed so there's no enhanced convenience
• You will need to use HMs

Additionally, there is a major bug in which viewing any Town Map screen crashes the game once you back out of the map.
That means you can't use Fly to fast-travel! Tested on both mGBA and VBA-M.

Visually, the Pokémon designs don't follow any typical conventions of Pokémon and that's a great thing! The designs are whimsical and personal in a way that most romhacks aren't. Sure the sprites don't have "professional talent" behind them, but once an artist reaches a threshold of competency, their skill no longer matters because they do what they need to do reasonably well enough. This romhack is unshackled from the expectations of what Pokémon are supposed to look like and has good enough art to communicate those ideas.

All this hack needs is a patch to replace the slurs and to fix the Town Map crashing. Once that's done I would recommend this hack to anyone. If you can stomach those things you should absolutely play this right now. But don't try to Nuzlocke this hack. Just trust me on this. Don't do it.

About the racist slur, well obviously you aren't the first person to adress it lol. I'm aware the joke is too offensive for the crowd. But be aware that like I'd mentioned in the post, the game wasnt made with the internet in mind, it was a personal project we made for fun. So we didn't consider that some of our jokes are a bit... well you know lol.
About the town map glitch, It's really weird since it never happened to me. I always open the map and it's fine for me. Maybe it's specifically this version that is available on pokecommunity.

Anyways, There actually is a newer version of the game that is available to download on reddit.
The version added some text, music, map differences, and changed the "racist pokemon" name. So I'd be glad to send you that version if you'd like.

Btw I think I might have a theory on why your game crashes when viewing the town map while mine doesnt, it may revolve around the version of fire red you used to patch this file. If you are interested I'd be glad to try helping you out with this.
