Here is where you can discuss the story of a boy and his electric mouse in "Pokémon - I Choose You!"

    My review to come forthwith.

(I effed up the St. Anne discussion, thinking it's today, as I found out it was yesterday. Oops. So, I'm going to press forward and go with the proper episode discussion of the day, which is this one. Sorry. I'll cover the St. Anne when it comes up in later in the month.)

BRILLIANT episode! This is THE episode that got be hooked. Back when I was 9, I had a hard time deciding between SM:TV Live with Pokemon or Live&Kicking with The Simpsons. This episode decided it for me. All the action and the cliffhanger was brilliant.

But I thought all the Pokemon groups (all the Geodude and stuff) working together was cheesy haha.

Pokemon I choose you is it now...

This was a good episode back in the day. It's amazing how much of the storyline loops back here. The opening was amazing, emulating the beginning of the games then switching to Bruno's cameo. I wish we'd have seen Gary's Squirtle in this episode, but I guess it works well for 5 seasons later. I do like this episode because it's responsible for bringing Misty into the fold (ironically the next one is what will lead to her leaving 5 years later). The spearow from this episode are re-visited later, we meet Prof. Oak, we all hate Gary already, Misty slaps Ash (in the japanese version), and Pikachu was funny when he wouldn't listen to Ash. I do wish they were handling the Ho-oh storyline they started here better.

Oh yeah, I always wondered why they changed it to St Anne from SS Anne

Whaaat!? Why does it say "Pokemon I choose you!" now!?

Because I screwed up. I forgot St. Anne debuted on the 7th, instead. But I didn't want to delete and waste the space, so I decided to re-edit for the real episode of the day, which is the pilot.

I'm sorry. The 8th did stick out in my mind, though, just wrong episode. So, re-edit your posts appropriately.

Here's Dogasu's updated take, to make you feel better. Enjoy.

Same here, I can't think of any reasons either but anyway I too think this was a rather interesting episode although personally I don't really like the first nine episodes for the most part the exception being the seventh episode. Mostly this was because of Misty's feud with Ash over the bicycle but after this was over she really added quite a bit to the series especially in Tentacool and Tentacruel. But the broken bicycle was still brought up from time to time and by the end of Kanto Misty had almost completely forgotten about it and why she was angry with Ash. Back on topic, the first episode was kind of meaningless in the long run but it did kick off one of the longest running animated TV shows in the US and it is still running despite the main cast switching which I see as kind of a mistake for American audiences since in many cases they get attached to the main characters in animated TV shows and they are inseperable in the minds of most.

Indeed, the pacing didn't rev up until later, so that might be why they decided to go with St. Anne episode to start the series, then wisely went to the pilot episode for the next day.

Anyway, I actually enjoyed the ending, when Pikachu finally became useful in its usual deus ex machina way. Rare, as I usually hate Pocket Monsters endings (because of said deus ex machina).

I keep forgetting Misty was in this one, as she made a longer lasting impression in the next episode. And we finally have the origins of the bike, which we will never speak of, again.

I remember when it first aired, Ash had a deep voice back then. I was already hooked on the trading cards before the Anime anyway, but this got me hooked on Pokémon altogether. I followed the Anime till end of Johto and then re-followed it in Battle Frontier, DP is awful.

I remember this episode. The first episode I saw, which got me hooked on the games and everything. There is just plenty of nostalgia with this. I even bought that really lame trading card game for the gameboy.

Ah, the beginning. What is there to really say about this? Rather, what is there that needs to be said? Every fan of the show, much less most fans of Pokemon itself, already know this episode front-and-back. The episode that introduced us to Ash. The episode that showed us how much of a jerk Gary was. The episode where a certain electric rodent simultaneously showed off and lost its rude streak. This is the episode that started the huge roller coaster we're all on now, never stopping and never changing.

"And make sure you wear clean underwear."

And we finally have the origins of the bike, which we will never speak of, again.

Right, we just have it referenced and abused every single time the female lead changes, whether they're leaving or joining in.

    Spoiler:

It doesn't matter if it wasn't the best episode! It is the episode that started it all! The episode that made pokemon the show it is today!!! Teeheehee

So in the beginning! A pokemon battle and if anybody who ever played Red and Blue have seen many times when staring their game. The first ever music to be seen and will be seen for a while more and even till now!

Then enters our hero!!!! Teeheehee And soon after our hero's faithful friend!

And then we said, "That is VERY good!" Teeheehee

I remember seeing this episode. Really I didn't see this episode until like after the Tentacool and Tentacruel episode. So I kinda was surprised to see this episode.

This episode really set everything up that would forever be used over and over again. Not only the bike but the mysterous pokemon that we don't even know they name of, Ho-oh. Just by that last scene I guess we should have known that we were going to see a lot of Ash. Like ten years worth of him. Teeheehee

So Charaxes what happen to the Johto ones? We aren't done with those are we?

Indeed, the beginning replicated the 'in-game' feeling, right down to Bruno's shadowed cameo. So awesome. I really enjoyed the early episodes in their potential. Of course, then it deviates, and we'll be talking extensively about that. Heh.

Good point, as each future region-setting episode always attempts to duplicate this episode, yet it doesn't quite work. Mostly, because this is the first. Heh.

We're done on late Johto, yes, but I haven't decided on the early ones. Steer the debate toward the "Pre Season 6 episode discussion" thread for further information, there.

Edit: Icha, I do want to reply to your post, but it deserves a separate entry from me. Particularly after my brain needs a recharge.

You've had quite the day, eh Charaxes?

Anyway, the roar of the stadium to find Nidorino vs. Gengar, sweet memories. :'D And yes, that amazing Poliwag pencil sharpener, it doesn't get any better than that, folks. Ash with that deeper voice, Gary's ever-impressive crowd. And seeing Pikachu & Ash for the first time.

I mean really, the episode that started it all. Gosh, I was so young too. XD

And seeing Ho-oh, nobody could ever forget that. Simply a fantastic episode, the beginning.

It starts out with what sounds like *actual* game music, all beepity and everything! I like how it comes out the TV then goes onto Ash.

I don't know about everyone else (it may be because I have a PAL TV when the DVDs are designed for NSTL or whatever) but the "Pokemon" logo looks soooo tacky on the title screen (plus all of 4Kids computer edits they make throughout IL - me and my little brother and sister had a fun game of pointing out all the computer edits because they're that easy to see - they're 10 and 12 and could spot them XD)

I used to think Ho-Oh was Moltres

Ash had a deeper voice at parts, but other lines I thought Ash sounded like a GIRL. Seriously. Loads of lines sound so girlish.

Understandable. The logo didn't bother me at first, but it got to me a few more episodes in. I wish Nintendo did a better job with it. Blargh.

Hey, I thought it was Articuno, myself, due to the tail and all. Who knew they'd pull a Generation II cameo so early?

Edit: Beachboy, you have no idea. I hope I don't have another day like this, for a long while. Heh.

I thought it was a Moltres n'all, I was surprised to find out it was a Ho-Oh when the Johto Pokémon came about. But after Johto, they kept adding legendaries sadly. I love the first ever episode. And when they introduced Team Rocket, they seemed so hardcore and had wanted posters. Then Ash's Caterpie (The Butterfree) kicked their ass's with a string shot!

The Pokemon Emergency discussion is up, so discuss the wanted posters to your heart's content. And the Caterpie episode discussion will be on tomorrow, so patience. Grins. Don't worry; we'll get to it all.

Oh, not the logo itself. I mean it looks like they saved a jpeg file of it from Google and tried editing out the white background. In Paint. Then put it in the title screen. Although, it's been a while sine I've watch the 1st episode, so maybe it's not that bad.

Although I wish they would update the logo like Japan does
