Cyndaquil appeared out of his Pokeball within moments. He yawned and looked around, then looked up at Shelby. She crouched down and eyed him carefully. He looks slightly bigger than the Cyndaquil on TV, Shelby thought, pulling out her Pokedex. She looked under stats and realized Cyndaquil was only about a pound bigger. Shelby finally settled on the fact that TV disproportioned a lot. Shelby then moved on to the attack section, checking out what moves her new Cyndaquil might know. Hmm…tackle and growl, huh? Seems like good first moves, Shelby thought.
"Hi Cyndaquil, I'm your new trainer," Shelby said. Cyndaquil looked at her. Shelby smiled slightly. Cyndaquil cocked his head to the side. Then it looked around with an almost awe filled expression on his face. Shelby laughed at this. "You're pretty cute, you know?" Shelby muttered, more to herself. After those words, she pushed up from her crouched position and looked on at…uh…Shelby blinked. Is that Route 29? She wondered. Well, Shelby decided if it wasn't, it was going to be until she could get a map.
"Cynda?" Cyndaquil asked. It trotted off, already heading down the route. Shelby blinked slowly, and then ran after her Pokémon. She caught up to him soon enough, and when she did she scooped him up. Cyndaquil looked up at her, his long nose touching her chin. "Cynda, Cyndaquil!" it exclaimed happily. Shelby blinked a few more times and then began to laugh.
"Well, let's get going," Shelby stated. She looked back at Newbark Town with a sad look in her eyes. Cyndaquil looked up at her when he noticed she wasn't moving, and scrambled in her arms until he found himself on her shoulders—well, sort of. His head and arms were resting on her shoulders as he tried to pull himself up, but the rest of him…wasn't. Shelby looked at him out of the corner of her eye. Cyndaquil poked her neck with his small arm. Shelby stayed silent, and then grinned. "We can do it, can't we buddy?" she asked the little Pokémon. Cyndaquil nodded and said his name happily, finally making it all the way on her shoulders. He held onto her hair and sat down. "Aren't you going to fall?" Shelby asked before they started to walk. Cyndaquil shook his head furiously. Shelby shook her head, but there was a smile on her face.
Shelby began to walk then, leaving Newbark Town and not returning for who knew how long. She was slightly saddened by the fact of leaving her favored brother and his Pokémon behind, but she was also glad that she could start her own journey. Little did she know, it would be much tougher…her first battle was one she'd never forget.
"HEY YOU!"
At the loud yell, Shelby whipped around. Cyndaquil almost fell off of her shoulders but he managed to hang on. The boy standing behind her was sneering at her and Cyndaquil, a Pokeball clenched in his fist tightly. "…Me?" Shelby asked, pointing a thumb towards herself. The boy nodded.
"You stupid trainers getting stupid Pokémon from the stupid Professor," the boy growled, teeth clenching. Shelby's eyebrows shot up, what the crap is his problem? "Battle me! I'll show you just how dumb those Pokémon he gives out are!" the boy shouted, pointing at Cyndaquil. Shelby's eyes narrowed and she glared at the boy. She glanced at Cyndaquil. "Chicken?" the boy asked smugly.
"Nope. Let's go Cyndaquil!" Shelby stated loudly. Cyndaquil nodded and leaped off her shoulder, landing perfectly on the ground. The boy grinned in a cynical way and tossed his Pokeball up in the air. There was a flash of light, and a purple snake-like Pokémon appeared. Shelby's breath caught in her throat. It wasn't the exact Pokémon she feared, but it was close enough. "Ugh…" she clenched her teeth as she paled visibly. Cyndaquil looked at her in confusion.
"What's wrong? Don't like my Ekans?" the boy taunted. He laughed. "M'kay! Ekans, get that Cyndaquil with leer!"
Ekans hissed and stared down Cyndaquil. Shelby blinked, unsure of what it was doing. She made the mistake of looking into the snake's eyes herself. Shelby fell backwards, a hand going in front of her face. The boy looked at her and laughed, stating that she was just a big chicken. Cyndaquil looked away from Ekans somehow and stared at Shelby. Suddenly the flames on his back lit.
"Cyndaquuuuuuuuuuuuuil!" Cyndaquil said angrily. It charged towards Ekans in a tackle attack. Shelby snapped her eyes shut, trying to shake it off. All she could see were the snake's eyes. Her eyes opened, and she gasped. Ekans had wrapped its way around Cyndaquil and was squeezing the small Pokémon. Shelby clenched her teeth, unable to believe that she was doing this in her first battle. If Caleb saw me…she looked at the ground. "Cynda! Q-quil!" Cyndaquil choked out.
"Ngh…" Shelby glared at the ground, and then pushed herself up. The boy was smirking ear to ear by now, assured of his own win. He ordered a finishing attack. "Cyndaquil!" Shelby shouted. She squeezed her eyes shut. Cyndaquil made a sound, and then there was a painful hiss. Shelby looked and saw that Cyndaquil had smacked Ekans in the head with the side of his nose. The attack had hit Ekan's eye.
"Shoot, Ekans!" the boy shouted. "Fine, get it with another wrap!" he called, pointing towards Cyndaquil.
"No!" Shelby shouted. "Cyndaquil, hit it with tackle!" Shelby called. Cyndaquil nodded and swiftly dodged the wrap and slammed into Ekan's side. "Good job, now finish it off with another ta—"
There was a flash of red light, and suddenly Ekans was gone. Shelby blinked and looked at the boy. He huffed and turned his head, his shaggy black hair flying in front of his face. Shelby's nose wrinkled; something wasn't quite right about this boy. "I'm Damien. Don't forget it either." With those words, he ran off into the distance. Shelby stared after him, completely confused at what had just happened. Cyndaquil looked rather confused himself.
"What was that all about?" Shelby asked.
"Cynda…?" Cyndaquil blinked. He shrugged it off and ran to Shelby, tugging on her pantleg. She looked down and saw that he clearly wanted to hitch a ride. Shelby rolled her eyes and picked him up, settling him down on her shoulders once more. Shelby spared another glance to where the boy had been, and then continued walking.
After about half an hour, Shelby let out a breath and half collapsed on the ground. This route seems like it'll never end! She thought in exasperation. Cyndaquil yawned and curled up in her lap, closing his eyes. Shelby set her elbow on her knee and rested her chin in her upturned palm. She observed the road and noted that it didn't seem like they were anywhere close to Cherrygrove. Shelby was about to grab a sandwich to eat from her pack, when the grass close to them rustled. Cyndaquil shot up, instantly alert. Shelby paused, hand on a sandwich.
"Ele!"
Shelby looked over to the tall grass in surprise. Moments later, a small Pokémon that was yellow and black walked out. Shelby dropped the sandwich, all hunger forgotten. She recognized this Pokémon as an Elekid, the pre-evolution of an Electabuzz. Shelby grabbed her Pokedex, checking the Pokémon's moves. Quick attack and thundershock? Shelby thought, glancing at Elekid. This'll be tough.
"Are you ready for another battle, Cyndaquil?" Shelby asked. Cyndaquil hopped up, nodding as the flames on his back sprang to life. Shelby grinned and looked at the field. Elekid had gotten into some sort of a stance. "Let's start things off with a growl attack," Shelby stated. Cyndaquil nodded and growled as ferociously as he could at the wild Elekid. Elekid shivered slightly, but took no other notice. "Now let's go in with tackle," Shelby said. Cyndaquil swiftly moved in with a tackle attack. That's when Elekid's arm began to rotate, electricity gathering in the top of its head.
Moments before Cyndaquil's attack struck, Elekid released the stored energy in a thundershock. The attack jolted through Cyndaquil, making the Pokémon cry out as it rolled backwards into the grass. Shelby cried out and turned swiftly, looking at her injured Pokémon. Cyndaquil panted as he got up, still tired from the previous battle. Shelby was afraid if they didn't end this fast, it would be over. She looked back at the Elekid.
It looks very powerful, she thought, taking in its size and judging the electric attack it had just released. Maybe too powerful for us…no, I can't think like that, she shook her head, dismissing the negative thoughts. "Cyndaquil, go for another growl!" Shelby called, figuring that staying away from it would be their best bet. Cyndaquil growled again, and it was stronger than the first. Elekid flinched, its expression changing. "Now again!"
"Bree!" Elekid called. It charged at Cyndaquil in what was obviously a quick attack. Shelby smirked, glad it had finally decided to go for it. She then ordered a tackle. The two Pokémon collided, dust kicking up around them as they did. They both flew back. Elekid smashed into a tree while Cyndaquil rolled backwards. That's it! Shelby thought excitedly. She then knew what she had to do.
"Cyndaquil, tackle it before it can recover!" Shelby called, pointing towards Elekid who was slowly getting up. Cyndaquil nodded and rammed it back against the tree. Elekid cried out, wincing. Shelby ordered another tackle, but as she did Elekid began to charge once more. "Hurry Cyndaquil!" Shelby shouted over the static crackling noise of the electricity. Cyndaquil smacked into Elekid, but when it did Shelby saw the electricity fly loose. Cyndaquil cried out as he was shocked again, getting thrown back away from Elekid.
"Cynda…" Cyndaquil said, getting up slowly and shakily. Shelby looked from her Pokémon to the wild one, and saw that Elekid was now panting. Other than that, it didn't look terribly tired. Oh man, this really isn't good at all, Shelby thought. "Cyndaquil!" Cyndaquil cried. It fell to the ground, eyes closed. Shelby's eyes went wide. Elekid charged, ready to finally finish it off.
"Cyndaquil, get up!" Shelby cried. Cyndaquil didn't move. Elekid reached Cyndaquil and attacked it, knocking them both back. "No…" Shelby hung her head. She didn't know how she'd make it through the routes without a Pokémon…
"QUIL!" Cyndaquil cried suddenly. Shelby's eyes snapped open and she looked over. Cyndaquil had burst to life, the flames on his back bigger and higher than ever. Shelby's eyebrows shot up at this sudden development.
"Alright! Cyndaquil hurry and use tackle!" Shelby said.
"Cynda…QUIIIIL!" Cyndaquil cried, smashing against Elekid. They knocked back into the dirt, kicking up a tiny cloud. Cyndaquil attacked again and again, pushing Elekid back every time it did. Shelby watched in awe. Cyndaquil's got total guts, she thought.
Finally Cyndaquil stopped, panting heavily and almost relentlessly. He looked on the verge of collapsing. Elekid had one arm planted firmly against the ground, but that was the only part of the Pokémon that was moderately up. It slowly tried to get up, but then fell back down. Shelby scrambled in her bag and finally produced a Pokeball. She glanced at the tired Pokémon and then threw it, watching as it was engulfed in a bright flash of light.
