Emerald hack: Pokémon Modern Emerald (Complete, 2.3.4 Released! Following Pokémon, Modern Battle Frontier, and more!)

But why so many variables? What's "the good one" out of all that bunch? It seems daunting to play them all with the only difference being if I'm playing with Gen 9 mons or if they have PSS, or if Fairy Type is added to the mix, of there's Snow Tiles on certain cities during winter.

Because the pokemerald expansion was created and released in December 2021, making it easier for devs with little to no ROM Hacking skills to make hacks. So now we got a bunch of Emerald hacks with various differences. You don't have to play all of them, especially not at once. Even as someone who loves Emerald didn't play most of them back to back 😆

Inclement is the closest we got to Rad Red for Emerald, ROWE is open world, Crest has a lot of built in QoL toggles for different runs, Elite Redux uses a unique ability system introduced with Exceeded Emerald, Quetzal is currently the only multiplayer hack in development, etc.

The best one depends on what you want in a ROM Hack. Someone into difficulty hacks probably would like Kaizo or Inclement Emerald. Someone who loves doing monoruns/nuzlockes would probably like Crest the most.

Also only 3 of the hacks you listed go up to Gen 9: Quetzal, Crest, and ROWE 2.0

unless i missed it somwhere, but i cannot find what pokemon is needed to force the mirage island spawn

What a Hack my friend, what a hack!

However, it is with an inkling of shyness but certain determination that I must pose the following question.

Can we expect a Version 2.3.3 later down the line?

Or even, perhaps, a 3.0.1 release?

Why am I asking? Because I want to ensure if this is a Completed hack so I can sink my jaws into it for the foreseeable future :)

Thanks a lot! Have a great week my friend.

The game is finished, and has been since day 1, but it doesn't mean it can't be improved further with more updates. After 2.3.3, it really depends on which bugs remain and what features I want to add. I won't announce a "last update" since there may never be one.
Also, I don't plan on making a big update that could render saves unusable again.

Spoiler:

Speaking of 2.3.3, I am releasing it today. Changelog:
  • IV setter: You can now choose between setting all IVs to the maximum value or selecting between 30 and 31 to allow different Hidden Potentials.
  • Added how much money the ability tutor takes from the player (25.000).
  • Leftovers healing animation is now shorter.
  • Fixed weather ball.
  • HGSS Pokedex fixes (order modes are still kinda buggy).
  • Fixed money checks in the Hyper Training gym.
  • Fixed the text of the Chansey Nurse trainer.

@resetes12 thanks for the reply! shiney hunting a wobbuffet and was ready to end it all lol

i would like to request a feature if possible, is there a way we can have a setting in the menu to 'remove restricted pokemon from frontier'?
i've always wanted to experience the legendries in the frontier to just see how good they are and actually use them for challenging content, instead they just feel like trophies

Sounds great!

Thanks a lot for the updates and thank you for the explanation.

Needless to say, my ignorance led to some awkward questionings from my part, so I hope I didn't came across as a burden :P

In the end, and after a thorough examination, deciding what exactly I wanted from a ROMHack, and putting my stern expectations in check, I decided to stick with Modern Emerald.

***

Guess this could be read as a "Review", so I'll give my thoughts and opinions that led me to stick with Modern Emerald.

"In a landscape rife with enhancements and difficulty hacks, where every new release seems to be devoid of any originality, it can be particularly hard to find an experience that encapsulates both the feelings of the source material and the newest features of the latest mainline games.

Certainly, it does take more than bloating the game with thousands of Pokémon (that are either mute or motionless), twisting their abilities and movepools with unnatural and unnecessary fluff, or even desecrating their original design with unbalanced and childish abominations, not only that but removing the highly praised post game content in the name of "progress" is never a good trade off, and in my own personal opinion, never will.

That said, a great ROMHack invites you to come back for more, it makes itself difficult to put down just because of how familiar, graceful and modern it feels, and that's exactly the blend that Pokémon Modern Emerald managed to achieve here, nevertheless, it's not THE perfect ROMHack, but its good points far outweighs the nitpicks that arose during my playtime, which in time became nothing more than a memory.

My final score is a solid 9.5/10, an S Tier if you will, and the defnitive way to re-experience the Hoenn Region through the lens of modernity while still retaining that unique Vanilla feeling without compromising the familiarity of it, the best part and the deal maker here is the fact it is complete and acitvely seeking to improve itself.

It is true that we can't stop the scene from self replicating, from copying each other with very minor changes being offered as QOL features and creating entirely new entries in an already bloated library, but entries like Modern Emerald provides us with the much needed reassurance that there's still people out there giving thought, careful consideration and respect to the paragon that is Pokémon Emerald".

So once again, Resetes, thank you for your time, effort and passion poured in Pokémon Modern Emerald.

I have no suggestions for this hack (other than adding Volcarona haha, just kidding) because it's genuinely hard to improve on a near perfect game, DexNav is great but meh; I like the Vanilla way of hunting for Pokémon and I definitely think any "Vanilla" Emerald Hack should keep it that way.

***

Edit: I think I actually do have a suggestion, it's so minor tho, and pretty absurd if I'm being honest, but still gonna attach it to this reply. It's basically a small redesign for the main screen to keep it both vanilla and modern.

None, "Route 110 East" is a different route, east of Route 110. It appears on the sand near Regieleki's Cave, and has only a 1% rate during day.

Spoiler:

Thank you! You are free to nitpick, all suggestions are welcome.
I've always wanted a new title screen but since I'm not an artist, creating one is quite the task.

Yes! I'd planned that option long time ago but never started it. It'll eventually come to the game.

Hello, first of all, I wanna thnak you for this amazong rom hack, I'm at almost 100h and I'm loving my time with it, specially the battle frontier, good old times.

I just got some visuals glitchs after some battle, I just installed the 2.3.3 version witch is fantastic.

When I check my pokemon resume, there is this glitchy thing.

I hope you can help, thank you. [PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Modern Emerald (Complete, 2.3.4 Released! Following Pokémon, Modern Battle Frontier, and more!)

Having a blast with the new update. Question: do you plan to add back the little pokeball icon in the pokemart tileset , which is missing? For example, if you check the Pokémon center outside tileset, we see the little pokeball above it. I don't know if it is possible to add it back to the pokemart or not. Thank you so much for your efforts here!!

I have the game on hard mode and super easy. How can I make it more difficult.?.

Not struggling at all..
You can make it so trainers have max IVs and EVs. But it's not a difficulty hack so if you're looking for a struggle, this ain't that.

Not struggling at all..
- Don't use save states.
- Don't use any rewind feature on your emulator.
- Manually Release fainted pokémon.
- Make it so Opponent Trainers IV's and EV'S scale alongside yours (this can be done in the game settings).
- You could also technically do a "pseudo nuzlocke" run.
- Rush the main game and focus entirely on getting Gold Symbols at the Battle Frontier.

This is a very personal take, but if you want to play through the main story in a brutal difficulty, lol, lmao even, that's precisely the problem with difficulty hacks nowadays, the main story isn't meant to be particularly difficult, the POST GAME content is, and I see a lot of Hacks that cut the Battle Frontier for the sake of a "Harder Story", like come on... Come on... Seriously?

Now, if you really want a challenge, try Emerald Kaizo or Emerald Rogue 2.0.1a (or Mocha 2.0.2a), one is a Difficulty Hack through and through, the other is a RogueLike that is genuinely difficult because your tools and resources are limited and you have to absolutely know what you're doing to complete a single run.

Modern Emerald here is different, this hack should be played if you want a, well... Modern Experience! The main story is pretty much the familiar one, but it truly shines once you reach the Battle Frontier, that's when the real challenge hits you, and where you'll be thankful for the modern features built in, the rest is eye candy to make the Main Story more enjoyable and beautiful.

Edit: Typos, lol.

Alright sounds good. I'll try them i am still playing this game it's awesome I like it a lot.

Quick question where can catch larvitar I am trying to find him in route 112. But all I have encountered are numels and marril.

Any help please?

Sure thing :)

As per the full documentation, Larvitar can be found on the following locations:
Rusturf Tunnel, Route 112 (In both Day/Night).

I'd assume it's one of those 1% Chance Encounters, so it's all RNG.

Alternatively, try catching a Pupitar instead and leave it with a Ditto (at the Daycare) to get a Larvitar, Pupitar can be found here:
Victory Road 1, Victory Road BF1 (In both Day/Night).

Best of Luck :)

***

Edit: Remember you can change your Pokémon Pokéball by "using it" from your bag and then unto your Pokémon.

Also, you can trade with other Games, like FireRed/LeafGreen/RSE, so if you already have a Larvitar there, you can just trade it to Modern Emerald; just a heads up, if you trade any Gen4+ Pokémon from Modern Emerald to any of the aforementioned games, then check the pokémon (that would appear with a Glitch Icon) you may end up corrupting your savefile on those games, so just trade something like a Wurmple or a Zigzagoon to be on the safe side.

Yep! That's normal as it's the same animation that plays on HG/SS when your Pokémon is following you.

In fact, if you have the "follower Pokémon" option enabled, the first Pokémon in your party that enters combat will display the same animation.

Should you wish to disable this option, go to the Options Menu, then locate the PKMN Follower option and turn that one off.

Here's a video reference of how it looks like on HG/SS.
