Emerald hack: Pokémon Tourmaline (v0.2.1 Released 04/22/2025)

HMs should be forgettable like ordinary moves in the v0.2 versions.

Spoilering the answers to your other questions:

Spoiler: Is there a TM for Headbutt?

Spoiler: Can I get to Scarlet Town?
I wanted to wait a little while before I returned to this thread. But I see that you've answered many of my burning questions and concerns, thank you! (: I figure I've given it enough time.
I did encounter a couple things I wanted to share tho. Plus some highlights! (can't put this before the quote for some reason, but getting back to it now)

That's so weird... I don't remember where exactly it happened, but I'm sure I wasn't able to get rid of Cut on Stunky, either when it was learning a new move thru level-up, or when I tried getting Foul Play thru the tutor. Leaning towards the latter. But just now I tried teaching Metronome to Machop again and was able to successfully forget Rock Smash, then did the same with Stunky, forgetting Cut for Roar.
[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Tourmaline (v0.2.1 Released 04/22/2025)[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Tourmaline (v0.2.1 Released 04/22/2025)

I don't have screenshots but I swear it gave that "HM moves can't be forgotten" at some point, before reaching the Desert town and getting the 2nd badge, if that mattered at all. Perhaps it has something to do with teaching from the move tutor? The fact that Foul Play wasn't on the list visibly? I think I did try teaching it, got the message, and canceled it.
Or I'm just tripping, and gaslit myself because of that one NPC's message about HMs and the tutor in Scarlet, which screwed with the pieces of my memory 😂😂😂
I can't test it atm due to being preoccupied with something else in the game, and no longer having enough shards (I needed money xD) and I don't have a save from that time. But if it works everywhere as intended, it's probably nothing and was just me haha. I will check later though, when I attempt to give it Foul Play. And if I experience that issue... (again?) I'll definitely share here.

Glad I could get those 30k+ steps to point out the glitch though! And thanks for those heads up! I may not need the tutor anymore xD But nonetheless good to know that I can reach that area, and my theory was correct!

I will look into adding trading in the future. Right now I'm prioritizing the main content of the game. I plan to focus on polishing the game after v1.0.0 is out.

In the meantime, you might consider starting a new run with a different team. I was hoping this would be a game that people would want to play through multiple times to try different things.

Broken save files suck though, I understand. I'm hoping that v0.2.1 saves will be compatible with everything going forward. But every time I think I'm done messing with the save blocks, something new comes up that I didn't think of before. That's why I don't promise anything about old save files.
Hmm... The truth is I feel I was being a little bit pushy, and started feelin like I was asking too much and everything. But still, I appreciate you saying you'll consider it [: But I'm loving everything about this game, and so I'm alright with doing multiple playthroughs. But being able to trade my strongest from some of my save files to the main one (including the other starters, any shinies I may find), and use them in battles like in whatever post-game/comp content there is, would be super fun and add replay value. I don't remember if you mentioned gym rematches, but that plus the league/league rematches and whatever else, to get them all to Lv100, I'd love that.
It's good to see your perspective on it and what you intended. I want to respect that as you are the creator, while also playing my way as much as possible! And I already have a full box of different Pokémon I wanna use, which are all useful in their own ways, without even reaching the 3rd gym yet, so that won't be a problem at all.
I think my plan for now is to get as far as I can in v0.2, and then once I've hit that stopping point, I'm gonna just save and have a separate game with a clean slate of save states and everything, for whatever the newest version is at the time, and start fresh. Probably gonna keep going with Chespin cuz it's my fav 😅 At least til 1.0 or beyond where I'll definitely try out the other 2 starters, once trading is implemented hopefully?, and do my trading from these 2 games to the main one.

It is the demo phase, so we always gotta be understanding if at any point, anything before v1.0 isn't compatible with 1.0.
As long as it improves the overall game and cleans up bugs and glitches, I think it's worth it. Just imo.
And I don't know how all that works, so I don't wanna expect something when I don't understand what goes into it or what sacrifices may have to be made for one other thing, and compromises.
Like, I may know about ips and ups, and that there are slight differences. Like how I've read some say one is "superior", or one is more compatible with patching over other patches made for the same rom, making it a better format. But I don't think it's that simple and that's why there's more than one file extension for patches, right? haha

Side note: the Seedot line is NOT supposed to be in the regional dex. I took it out a long time ago, but I just realized that I forgot to change some encounter tables.

Good news is that you should be fine to play through the game with it. The only issue is that it will make the Pokédex glitch out (since it doesn't actually have a regional dex number). So just be careful when using it.
Interesting. I actually didn't even start encountering Missingno til I got Seedot from cutting the trees.
The good news is a relief though 😅 I will be careful from here on out. As of now, every Pokémon either has their location as unknown or one red dot in the top left of the map when checking the Pokédex, so I don't really need to use the Pokédex for anything right now. Other than checking entries for Pokémon that I evolve. But I save a lot, and will save first whenever I open the Pokédex. So I should be fine lolll

Thanks again! ☺️ I hope development continues to go well!

As for the other things I mentioned...

2nd gym, the left side here works fine, but then on the right, it's as if you're walking underneath.

And then to the west of the Kindler and Picnicker you double battle, this tree / shadow hides the player character. I haven't encountered any others that do this so far.
[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Tourmaline (v0.2.1 Released 04/22/2025)

Then, some time after beating the gym, I made my way back to get some more Berry Juice in my mission to get one daily... My rival took that personally 😭😭😭
I did not expect that so soon after our last battle right before the 2nd gym (not complaining at all, tho it is an inconvenience. This dang kid. xD It worked super well if a surprise fight to catch us off guard was your intention). i had to reset because I changed up my team to be overall weaker so I could train. And they wouldn't have stood much of a chance at all against him, and different outbreaks as well as training in general has kept me occupied. But anyways yeah I went back and he's just standing there in the door of the 2nd gym, both when I walk in and out. Leaving and coming back to the town, resetting, all fail to clear him away. I'm sure he'll disappear after I beat him again.

Just some minor things, and just those three (:

So.. Dust Devil, right? It's a really cool move. Pretty well-balanced. Not too strong, and it's a special move, so there aren't too many ground types that can take advantage of it without opportunity cost, and it's not a guaranteed stat-raise.
[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Tourmaline (v0.2.1 Released 04/22/2025) [PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Tourmaline (v0.2.1 Released 04/22/2025)

One thought I had, when I first encountered it, as well as now, is that being able to hit flying types and Pokémon with the Levitate ability would be pretty neat. It'd be a decent counter versus Levitate. While not being as powerful as an Earthquake. Great if super-effective as well.
We've got things like Surf hitting Diving enemies, Sky Uppercut hitting Pokémon that are up in the Sky due to Fly. I believe it hits Sky Drop as well, but not 100% on that. I wanna say Thunder can hit a Pokémon that's used Fly as well, but I'm not sure.
You've got Foresight letting Fighting and Normal moves hit Ghost types and Miracle Eye letting Psychic moves hit a Dark type.
So... a dust devil. It's basically a mini tornado or twister, comprised of dust, dirt, garbage, etc...
So by that logic at least, it'd make sense a twister made of dirt, dust, and even sand, would hit even a Pokémon that's mid-air, ie. a Flying-type or someone with Levitate.
Perhaps you considered that already and decided against it though. If you've got your reasons difficulty-wise, I can't argue against that.
This stems from me switching out against the gym leader into a flying type, unsure if it'd actually be rendered ineffective, or actually hitting.
So you know how Freeze-Dry is strong against Water types, despite Ice normally being weak against them? (Ice should be super-effective against water to begin with, but anyways lol)
I like to think of it like that. It opens some more options up, flexibility, etc. It could be super-effective against flying types so they're not completely useless otherwise. And it can be a curveball to players who do the same thing I did, or just assume they have dominance against a grounded defender with their airborne attacker. So it goes both ways. Even being a low base power move, and special, getting STAB on top of a ×2 power-up, bringing it to 150 power, is quite something. Not to mention if it's like a rock, fire, poison, electric or steel type. That's 300 power. That could pressure the player to switch out against a ground type, in fear the ground type in-battle may have that. Or to just not switch into their flying type that may or may not have one of those typings as well, when they'd otherwise have the advantage.
There's also Salazzle with Corrosive as another example, who can use Poison moves on Steel types, who they normally don't affect. It's plenty cool as it is, but this could really elevate it.

So after I said Lv20 was the highest I found from cutting a tree.... There was a certain Mass Outbreak in the Forest, and I went to cut the trees at the northwest corner, which I normally ignored, and I got this...
[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Tourmaline (v0.2.1 Released 04/22/2025)
It had the potential to slaughter my entire team 😵💀 And wouldn't even let me get a Yawn off. But when getting just one level takes forever, I saw this as a good opportunity for training, rather than just letting it go.
So I just saved the state, and kept throwing balls and resetting til I finally caught it successfully. No damage done, no status inflicted, nothing. 🙏🏽

It was great experience for my Gulpin too! 3 whole levels! And it's nature is acceptable. At least it's offenses are unharmed xD
[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Tourmaline (v0.2.1 Released 04/22/2025)
How high do these go? 🤣 And do they scale with badges/progress? If I found a Lv42 while having only 1 badge... Am I gonna see a Lv60 or Lv70 Torterra or something when I get the 4th or 5th badge? Lmaooo. I do like the challenge though!! As long as my team gets to a certain level, the higher they are, the less a difference of this amount of levels will make, and I could at least weaken enough to catch it, hopefully XD

More of this! :D

The energy/aura flaring up is great! Is being able to catch them intended? I did want to get a good one with a good nature and stats, so I reset and went thru the battle a few times but I managed to get the perfect one much sooner than expected. After maybe 3 tries?

One nitpick is that running away is possible, and I feel it should not be. Not for a grand battle like this, which is like a mini boss. It also just ends and everyone acts like you dealt with it like a champ, all the same, and you're given a voucher to a Bike that normally costs 10 thousand dollars lol. If it's been terrorizing this old tourist couple... this monstrous Steelix... a giant snake made of metal, I don't think it'd just let you run away, with you essentially telling it "shoo" and then it being like "sorry, have a nice day". If the player is a Pokémon whisperer and has a skill involving calming down aggressive, bloodlusted Pokémon without so much as one attack being dished out, I mean sure. XD
But it'd need to be explained, and be made into a story element imo. Because that's a pretty impressive talent there. Otherwise, maybe making running imposible would be the way to go. When the game reaches the final stages, it'd be really cool to have an overworld model of these mini-bosses appear and actually move in for the attack in some way and maybe roar right before the battle. Either way, I do hope to see more of these. It's a super cool and unique part of the game. Having one at some point before the 1st gym would be cool. Maybe something that isn't too strong, but can help against the first grunt. That and/or one after the 1st gym. I understand if ya don't want to add too many to make it not as cool or make the whole game about it, but I feel like it's too cool to be a one-off or only have a couple of them. Big bosses having this kind of a boost on their final, signature Pokémon would make for an interesting challenge. The final boss / box Legend getting a boost to every stat at the start of the battle would be cool too. Your game though 😅 I'll let you take care of that, I don't wanna overstep hah.

So after getting the bike, in the cave grotto right there in the desert, I found another Steelix immediately 😂
[PokeCommunity.com] Pokémon Tourmaline (v0.2.1 Released 04/22/2025)
I thought it was funny. And it's well-placed, as you can only get it after completing the quest. If you defeated it but still want Steelix, this is your opportunity I suppose.

After that, all I could get was Numels, but did get Sandile during the outbreak, with its Hidden Ability. All of its abilities are useful so I can't decide which one I want to go with. Both Moxie and Anger Point would be great for sweeping. But Anger Point is more about luck, so a lot more situational, and waiting to get hit with a crit which is potentially dangerous, especially when items aren't allowed in battle, is tough.

Metronome might be a little on the cheap side for what it can do. I think anywhere between 30k and 50k is pretty reasonable. Or even more, depending on how you see fit, based on all these factors. As much as it is luck-based. Especially with how early on you can get it. If I'm pulling these insanely powerful and signature moves, capable of one-shotting or at least dealing significantly heavy damage, over and over again, I'm sure others are doing the same.

I was able to get these moves off, as well as my Machop hitting a Psystrike on some wild Spearow 😯 Good to know that's in the game. So will be able to get Mewtwo at some point then? :D
If I see it get Fusion Flare or Fusion Bolt, I'm gonna get high hopes for seeing Reshiram/Zekrom lol. Original Dragon maybe?
Sorry I just find them to be some of the coolest dragons, especially the concept of the original dragon, which has some of the craziest and coolest fan designs. 😅
Also got lucky and Machop hit an Energy Ball against a Sandile with Metronome. Didn't get a pic of it tho, same as Psystrike.

I did luck out getting this Aipom from the lone cut tree right outside the entrance to the Forest, and I'd keep it, sadly it's a minus Atk nature... And Defense is all but useless to me. And I know exactly what I'm gonna trade it for hehehe (;
Funny story, after a battle with a Nidoran, where my other Pokemon got poisoned, when I went to use an Antidote to heal, I saw Aipom was holding an item thanks to Pickup. And ofc. It turned out to be an Antidote. xD coincidence?
With all that being said, I'm making steady progress in my playthru, having fun with training various different Pokemon, and I won't say it's gotten easier by any stretch, but definitely a lot smoother and I'm sitting more comfortably, to where I'm not battling for EXP alone, but mindful of EVs, googling to see what EVs a certain Pokémon gives if I'm not sure, and so on and so forth.
And I'm loving all the fine details. The new moves, the characters, the whole sidequest mission aspect. Encounters and items thru cutting and rock smash, mass outbreaks, and the new Echo type.
I remember I was pretty sad to see Woobat lose its Psychic type. But I understand it now, and it's really a great type for it. Super useful. I've memorized how it works in battle, its weaknesses, resistances, immunities, and what it hits super-effectively or not very effectively.
And I found Chingling in that Desert Tower, which you mentioned before. I thought about it, and that's probably one of the best typings for BOTH of those types. It's only weak to Dark and Bug, right? Echo doesn't affect it, Ghost attacks are now neutral versus having 2× damage against its Psychic type, and Psychic attacks are the same in regards to the Echo type. And you still have STAB supereffectiveness against most Ghosts, plus Ghost type attacks can be learned to hit Psychic types super-effectively. Not to mention, it's got STAB neutral damage against steel types, given they don't have something that resists Echo, like Psychic, for instance lol.
I just haven't gotten one with the right nature yet, and don't feel like training it just yet but definitely will at some point. I'm keeping it in mind for the future, because I love that type combination! In theory at least.

I think that does it for this post. As I'm sitting on over 3,000 words, between the two posts.... 3,403 to be exact. Me and my essay-writing self. 😅Lmaooo
Cheers!

P.S. I spoiled both posts in their entirety as it's just easier that way. For reference to anyone who sees in the future, I reccomend not checking the contents until you have at least beaten the 2nd gym and completed the "Desert Rescue" mission. You'll know once you get there (: A significant amount of the use of the HM "Cut" is also recommended, but not a requirement. I'd hate to spoil the fun of an otherwise blind run. These things wouldn't have been as fun for me if I had already known about them, personally. For anyone else who is like me in this way, I have considered that for you (: Have fun!!!

What I have encountered so far with Cut, not including mass breakouts: Bellsprout, Seedot, Aipom, Bonsly, Caterpie, Pineco, Hoppip

Dust Devil by its very nature is a wind move, so it SHOULD hit flying pokemon and levitate users by that association alone, so yeah that checks to me.

Personally Bonemerang should also work on flying/levitating pokemon too considering boomerangs is a thrown projectile that was specifically invented for use by hunters to hit difficult targets but I dunno how that'd work really.

Oh, true!! Wind-specific natures are even in the game, too! Spearow has Wind Power as an ability, which I plan to use thanks to it being +spd/-def.

And yeah. Boomerangs are very apt at hitting faraway targets, especially those in the air or higher above you.
Like how Sokka used in the Air Temple against Combustion Man in Avatar the Last Airbender, for instance. So I agree on that front.

I get it's Pokemon, and real world logic isn't always going to apply to it and all, even if they use it for some things. Such as water putting out fire, fire burning grass, rocks hitting birds, and the whole psychic being weak against dark, ghost and bug, 3 common fears. List goes on and on. They kinda just apply it or don't, all at their discretion. But some things they do, are questionable still.
I feel the only reason Bonemerang is even a ground type move, is because of Cubone and Marowak. Same with Bone Club. It is what it is I suppose. It'll never change though, despite how many types we have that could be more fitting. The last time we saw a overhaul of move types and stuff was with Fairy type.
It would be so cool, and so much more fitting, if they changed Bonemerang to hit or even be strong against flying types. But I doubt it'll happen in the next decade. Similar to how they're never gonna change the whole Ice being not very effective to Water. If they made some changes for Ice type both offensively and defensively though, that would be super nice. Like Ice resisting Ground as it's already strong against it, resisting Poison perhaps, hitting water harder, or at the very least being neutral, as arguments can be made for both. They can kinda just coexist, like icebergs, ice water as a drink, parts of the world like the North and South Pole, and Antarctica... Ice can melt in water, or it can freeze it. Plus steel can be broken by harsh enough cold.
Not that any of these changes need to be made in this specific romhack by any means. Just in the official capacity I mean.
While I say that though, they did make changes to Steel type, even if they essentially just made it weaker defensively. It still has immunity to poison, as well as resisting fairy and hitting it super-effectively. So I guess... they could do it one day, as many many people are pointing this out, talking about it, Gamefreak knows by now how weak the Ice type is and how it's not a hard handicap to any Pokemon they give the typing to. At least I would hope they do. I mean, the very fact they made the move Freeze-Dry feels like a soft change, when they weren't willing to go through with a change completely. It does change the game a lot.
It's also becoming more and more common for the Ice type to get better competitively in romhacks and fangames, being changed in one way or another, notably how it interacts with other types. I guess it could change one day in official games.
