Welcome to PokéRPG, a Pokémon MMORPG built entirely from scratch using LibGDX. Our mission is to recreate nostalgic regions such as Kanto, Johto and Hoenn while adding our own artistic flair in order to keep these regions fresh. While we aim to bring in fresh ideas and regions, we noted that creating an entirely new region would hinder progression at this present time. Yet we are not discouraged from adding entirely new regions as expansion packs, or as part of our monthly update program.

The core focus of PokéRPG will be creating a multiplayer experience, encouraging you to participate in the economy, play with and find new friends, and help shape the world. While most quests, story-lines, and experiences will be "single-player", we will have world events, triggers, and more that can be participated in with your friends or strangers. Progress through the game, earn experience and challenge other players to find yourself on the top of the Highscores!

PokéRPG is an exciting new entry into "fan-made" games, as we decided to go entirely from scratch using LibGDX. Whilst we are standing on the shoulders of giants (Pokemon Essentials), we didn't like how limited RPGMaker et al were in terms of building our own content, and having full control over the source code. This means that we'll be able to develop our own systems, particle effects, animations, data, etc without relying on outdated technology. Ensuring that we get the core components down properly in our game engine of choice will allow easier development of future content, and more options in terms of bringing in potential new developers. Those proficient with Java, Kotlin or Rust will be able to take advantage of our core and write engaging content that will benefit the community for years to come. With the advent of LibGDX, we are also not limiting ourselves in terms of color pallette, sprite sizes, or even custom neat features such as all new dialogue systems etc.

A few interesting ideas that we've built into our roadmap for PokéRPG include a class system, skill system, and more! Let's go into detail below:
Class System
An interesting concept that we are deciding to implement is a class system, which will give your character unique boosts and quests while enjoying your time on PokéRPG. The following classes and their attributes are concept at this time, but are the general rough idea on how they will play out.
Spoiler:
- Novice Trainer: The Novice Trainer class will be close to a classic Pokemon experience. Starting them in either New Bark Town or Pallet Town, initially their main quest will revolve around travelling to Violet or Viridian City respectively to enroll in the Pokemon Academy. This will give them access to a Dorm Room. Their early quests will be learning about Pokemon, taking various tests and finishing their final battle exam. Once graduated they will set off to gather 8 Gym badges and become a Champion level trainer.
- Farmhand: The Farmhand class will start the player with an overgrown and desolate plot of land. Their main quest will revolve around bringing life back to their farm and paying off their debt.
- Fisher: The Fisherman class will start the player off in either Olivine City or Vermillion City. They will have immediate access to a Good Rod. Their main quests will revolve around acquiring all of the ribbons available in Fishing Derbies.
- Detective: The Detective Class will start in Goldenrod City. They will have immediate access to a Motorcycle. Their main quests will revolve around uncovering the truth behind the Gamecorners in both Goldenrod and Celadon City.
- Digger: The Digger Class will start the player in the Ruins of Alph. They will have immediate access to Digging Tools and their main quests will revolve around uncovering the mysteries surrounding the many dungeons in Johto and Kanto.
- Cook: The Cook Class will start the player in Celadon City. They will have immediate access to the Cooking Kit and their main quests will revolve around acquiring all Ribbons available in Cooking Contests.
- Ranger: The Ranger Class will start the player in Fuchsia City. They will have immediate access to Quick, Nest and Heavy Balls Their main quests will surround capturing and subduing enraged Pokemon.
- Breeder: The Breeder Class will start the player on a defunct Breeding Ranch. Their main quest will revolve around restoring their ranch and breeding high tier Pokemon to win Ribbons in Breeding Contests.
- Crafter: The Crafter will start in Azalea Town. They will have immediate access to a Crafting Kit and Apricorns of various colours. Their main quest will revolve around acquiring all of the Pokeball Crafting recipes as well as acquiring the ingredients to make a Masterball.
- Note: Only one Masterball will be able to be crafted per Character during their final quest. This way they will retain their rarity.
- Expert Trainer: Expert trainers will choose a Type that they are proficient with. They get bonuses with their selected type and negatives towards all others. Duo-Type pokemon are allowed simply because of how limited Gen 1&2s roster is.
- Nuzlocke: When a Pokemon or the Player's HP hits 0 they die. Best kept as a class as the player doesn't get too invested in heavy questing.
Class Categories:
- Adventure: This would be story driven classes like Novice Trainer, Detective and Ranger. Each one will have their own separate story quests that tie into the singular class wide main quest.
- Economy: This would include Farmer, Fisher, Cook, Crafter and Breeder. Classes with specific skill specialties and quests pertaining to advancing those skills and winning skill relating contests.
- Specialty: Expert Trainers, Nuzlocke Trainers. These are challenge classes that increase the game's difficulty.
Skill System
Another addition to PokéRPG will be our skill system, allowing players to level up these skills by performing certain actions related to that skill in order to unlock new content, items, or lore. Check out the spoiler below for more information!
Spoiler:
- Foraging: Determines rarity and volume of items you can forage
- Farming: Determines quality of produce and byproducts you harvest. This will also determine what the player may build, craft and upgrade on their farm.
- Crafting: Determines quality of items crafted and Recipes you can learn
- Fishing: Determines frequency of bites, usable rods, bait, tackle, and rarity of pokemon.
- Cooking: Determines quality of food, what recipes you may learn
- Breeding: Determines quality of random IVs, Hereditary moves and perhaps slight shiny and beta chance when maxed. This will also determine what the player may build, craft and upgrade on their ranch.
- Digging: Determines what level of dig spots you can attempt, quality and quantity of findable items.
Skill Details
- Crafting: Players will need to acquire the crafting kit, recipes and be at a campsite or crafting station in order to craft items. Basic ones can be purchased while others will be side quest rewards. Crafters will start with the recipes for Pokeball, Twine, Paint and Cloth
- Farming: Farming for everyone but the Farmer Class will be a mid to late game optional mechanic. Once a player buys a farm. They will be able to grow and harvest berries, vegetables and apricorns as well as raise pokemon for their byproducts. Farmers will start with an indebted worn down Farm that they will have to fix up to use properly.
Pokemon Byproducts:
Miltank for Milk
Farfetch'd for Eggs
Mareep for Wool
Paras for Tiny Mushrooms
Parasect for Big Mushrooms

Paras for Tiny Mushrooms

- Cooking: Players will need to acquire the Cooking Kit and be at a Campsite or a kitchen in order to cook. Similar to crafting the player will find recipes in markets and through side quests. However the player may also discover recipes by experimenting with their ingredients. The quality of these dishes are dependent on two factors. Quality of ingredients and skill level. A low level Cooking skill can easily take 5 Star ingredients and produce a 2 Star meal. Likewise lower quality ingredients may yield 4 Star quality foods if the Cook is skilled enough. Cooks will start with the Cooking Kit and the recipes for Sweet Smoothie, Steamed Rice, Dough, and Onigiri.
- Fishing: Once the player buys, receives or crafts a Rod they will be able to fish. Fishing will start with a cast meter which will determine the distance the player casts their line. Then after waiting and getting a bite, the tension meter will pop up. The tension meter will be color coded, signaling the player when to stop and start reeling, if they reel too far into the red, their line will snap and their catch will be lost. Players will also have access to different lures and baits for honing in on certain types of water dwelling pokemon. Rods will have durability and will break when used too many times. The player will gain access to stronger rods and rod recipes through quests. Fishers will start with an Old Rod and the Crude Rod recipe.
- Foraging: Throughout the overworld players will run into Foraging Nodes, these nodes will produce different foragables upon harvesting. And will be a key component in early Farmers, Cooks, Crafters and Fishers finding the ingredients they will need. The Foraging skill itself will determine the quality and quantity of the foraged items.
- Digging: Once the player buys or receives a Digger's Kit they will be able to harvest resource nodes. These nodes will come in a couple of different shapes, some being stuck in walls and others simply laying on the ground. When a player begins digging, the digging window will open showing them a square of dirt and rock all varying in hardness. They will have access to a pick and a hammer.
- Breeding: Breeding for everyone but the Breeder Class will be a fairly late game optional mechanic. Though a player will be able to Breed via a Daycare the Breeding Ranch will open up an entirely new ball game. Once the player buys a Breeding Ranch they will be able to buy and craft new pastures, Barns, Incubators and Nurseries. Breeders will start with a worn down indebted Breeding Ranch that they will need to fix up in order to use properly.
While we have many new exciting developments to share with you in the future, we figured it was time to share our little game and invite people to join the community while we prepare to ramp up development. Feel free to join our Discord and join the discussion on PokéRPG! As always, keep an eye on this thread for development updates and discussion.
