well, the folks complied with Pokemon USA as far as i know. but i'm just wondering, why would cancer researchers even name it that? that is just so bizarre on so many levels. i mean, i get the "pokemon causes cancer" joke, but something that's supposed to be taken seriously really shouldn't be using silly humor.

The cancer causing gene is called "POK erythroid myeloid ontogenic gene" right?
So: POK erythroid myeloid ontogenic gene
    = POKemon

I guess the researchers neede some sort of humor because of the seriousness of their work?

it is actually essential for gene names to be easy to remember and easy to relate.

Pokemon was a really good name, in terms of science.

That Pokemon USA just gets in the way with science research, causing problem to humans!
Seriously, the "main switch" to cancer is a very important gene, why couldn't it be named Pokemon?
Pokemon USA is just...unnecessary, and who do they think they are?

Shouldn't they get permission from Pokemon Japan (or whatever) first?

Strange thing is that Pokemon USA complained, but Pokemon Japan didn't...

I assume it's because its still Pocket Monsters in Japan?

possibly they haven't heard of it yet, because of language barrier.

I just don't think Pokemon USA should have any rights to do these sort of stuff without permission from Japan.

That's kinda funny no offense. LOL I mean is it just a coincidence or those scientists decided to name it from a popular Nintendo franchise?

I don't think sueing is a good idea but Pokemon is not a god name for a type of Cancer.

I see why Nintendo might sue, but I don't think that they should. The researchers need their money to save lives. Video games are much less important. NIntendo should stop being so greedy.

Jeez, you guys are being all mean to Nintendo! It's not like they're going and stopping research or breaking beakers! and beside, do you realize how much crap would go down if people read only the headlines!

    Ex.
    Headline: Pokemon Causes cancer!
Guy: Hay!!! They should make a petition to get rid of that game!!!
Guy starts "SPEC" Campaign. "Stop Pokemon's Evil Cancer!"
People hear this guy who havn't read the article and...
KABOOM!!! Angry mobs and what not!

I don't blame the scientist. As an inside joke nickname it's a good idea ^_^! But when the press names an article that then it's wrong. They probably should of sued the papers, but they decided to go for the source instead.

Sueing will NOT be a good Idea. Why? The researchers need money for research right? If they have no money no research=less ways to try to prevent cancer OR more research on new cancers.

So Nintedo sueing will make less funds and we Die.I guess...

but they own the name. What they did is stealing.

    Oh please, its NOT Nintendo!
Its Pokemon USA! Pokemon USA is the horrid one!!

But I fully agree with all other of your points...science is far more important!
    Pokemon USA, SHUT UP!!

    TO DRAGONITE TAMER:
Its NOT a type of cancer! Its an ONCOGENE! =.=

Sure science is more importent, but they could of used a diffirent name. Also Pokemon USA is not horrid so you shut up

Yeah I kinda..agree with Red Gyradose. They shouldn't have chosen Pokemon. And yes, its like stealing >.>

But I don't think sueing is such a good idea either. I mean, they kinda need the money o__O But they should atleast change the name. If we do ever have angry mobs, then yeah, they should sue! XD

Its just a concidence, would you like to say the entire name everytime. I mean really people, it is stealing if it was like "The Pokemon Cartoon causes cancer." I mean honestly, if the abbriviation happens to be Pokemon then let it be.

That's interesting, never heard of that but none the less, it'd be understandable if they did want to take legal action in order to ensure their product is safe and since the Pokemon product has nothing to do with the ever so threatening disease of cancer, I wouldn't blame them at all. I'm not a guy who likes to get involved with court issues but I'd file a lawsuit if I were in their shoes considering there are plenty of other names they could use. Just imagine the parents who would go nuts if they end up being convinced that their children are in danger of something like that when in reality that's not the case at all.

It is important for key genes such as POK Erythoid Myelin Oncogenic factor to have a easily remembered, short, popular short name.

zbtb7 is not as easy to memorize, and may cause a little time delay for science research,
If they continue to use "Pokemon", time delay and confusion can surely be reduced.
