my highest chain was 14 with ditto (at the same time me and my cuzin were both getting a chain of ditto he got a 21) but no shinies? rite now im resesting fire red for a shiny charmander XD

ha....good luck getting a good nature for it;)

ha good for you getting a shiny cubone:)...no luck for me at all though:(...YET

holy crap i got a shiny on my second try but then i losted the chain on my 9th

wow that was quick
people i just caught MY FIRST SHINY!!!!!!!
And it was one that i have been looking for....SHINY BOLD EEVEE!!!!WOW THAT IS SO LUCKY TO FIND ONE AND HAVE IT THE NATURE THAT I WANTED IT!!!!IM SO LUCKY:)

hehe yup:)

as you see my sig in blue that im looking for:):):)
im so happy

i wanted a shiny not only because its shiny....but because i personnaly think a blue umbreon looks better than the original one.

i needed it for my team.

Shiny Gastrodon in my longest chain...14..

I was surprised.

Really.

whats the chances of seeing a shiny on a 74 chain???

Oh my! Don't bother chaining up to 74, just chain up to 40 because the chances are still the same once you get to 40. Each patch still only has a 1/200 chance of being shiny even if you get a chain of 100.

hey thanks for anserwing me that question:)
i was like why do you go past 40 if you still have the same probability of seeing a shiny as if it was your 40th chain.(at least i thought i was right)but now im sure.
thanks:)
no i know i should stop at 40;)

Oh I sorta hate you right now...
Eevee has really given me the run around...

I'm confused about the whole chaining thing. I still don't get how to do it. That video on the first page didn't really help me at all because she just sat there explaining and didn't really demonstrate how to do it in the game.

First stupid question I have is: Where do I get the PokeRadar?
Next stupid question: When I start the Pokeradar, am I supposed to run into every patch that shakes and fight the pokemon there hoping it's shiny? Or am I just supposed to sit in one spot until I see a shiny patch?

You can get the pokeradar by completing the Sinnoh pokedex. You have to go into Professor Rowan's lab and talk to Professor Oak, who will allow you into Pal Park. Then go to Pal Park and Prof Oak will give you a pokeradar.

Dude, this needs an awful lot of explaining.....but I'm willing to do it ^_^

Alright, first you need to make sure you have plenty of max/super repels because this is important.

What to do:

1. When you start the pokeradar you can run into any shaking patch of grass you like but make sure you use your max/super repel before you go running around in the grass. Remember to use another repel when your old one runs out.

2. When you're in a battle with the pokemon you want to chain, defeat it or catch it (I recommend defeating it or you might eventually run out of room in your PC box) but DO NOT run away from it or you'll break the chain.

3. When you're out of the battle there will be more shaking patches of grass. There will be a maximum of four patches shaking at one time. Look at them and remember where they are: this is where we come to the rules of chaining.

Rules of chaining

1. The next patch of grass you need to go into in order to keep the chain going needs to be the one that is the furthest away in terms of steps (in other words, the patch that takes the largest number of steps to get to).

2. The patch of grass that is the furthest away needs to be at least four steps away but no more than seven steps away.

3. Only choose a patch of grass if you see all four patches shaking. If you can't see them this might mean:
- you are too close to the edge of the big grassy area (I'll explain this later)
- your eyes weren't quick enough to see all four patches

4. Only choose a shaking patch of grass if it was the same type of shake as the first one you chose. That is either one that shakes mildly or one with white flashing in it, and Speedy Sonic told me there's another type of shake similar to the mild one that I didn't know about but I still don't get it because my eyes are useless...so sorry about that.

5. Don't go out of range of the pokeradar. This is when the patch of grass you reset the pokeradar in has gone off the screen because you ran too far out.

6. Don't go into a shaking patch of grass which doesn't have eight patches of grass surrounding it. See my explanation on page 5 of this thread for more details.

7. Don't go into a shaking patch of grass which is right next to another shaking patch of grass (same reason as point #6)

8. Don't use items such as your Bike or, correct me if I'm wrong, rare candies.

If you can't fulfill all of these points then walk 50 steps and reset the radar.

As I said in point #3, try not to go too close to the edge of your big grassy patch in your chosen route. Oh dear, this is going to be difficult to explain...um...I'll try anyway.

When you reset the radar in a patch of grass there are four possible "rings" in which the patches will appear. Ring 1 will be the ring of patches of grass around your patch of grass, ring 2 will be a bigger ring around ring 1, ring 3 will be a bigger ring around ring 2 and ring 4 will be a bigger ring around ring 3. Each patch will appear in a ring, so you can't have two or more patches of grass shaking in the same ring. I hope you know what I mean by "ring." Jesus, I don't think I explained that very well, I hope it makes sense :\

*strokes chin* I hope I haven't missed anything and more importantly, I hope I helped you.

Yeah, I think I understand it a little better now, thanks. I'll have to try it and see how it works.

So I have a chain of 40 Bagon and have been resetting the radar for like 15 minutes and still no shiny... :/

Yeah, that's right! Just practice and I'm sure you'll get there in the end ^_^
If you still don't get something then just PM me or post on this thread, whatever.
Oh by the way, don't expect to get a very long chain the first few times you try this, because you will get better.

...And don't bother making a chain longer than 40, just keep resetting the radar when you get to 40!

...And look out for the shiny patch lol. When it's a shiny pokemon a patch will "shine" and you go in that one to get the shiny. Don't worry about the rules any more when you see this patch, just go for it :D

Oh dear, that's really unlucky. Umm...try resetting the radar right in the middle of your grassy area because that way you'll get all four patches shaking. Read the "ring" theory in my previous post. If you let a ring lie outside the grassy area then one of the shaking patches may lie outside the grassy area and you won't see it.

Yep I am doing that...
The chain now has 48... still resetting...
And the chain just broke... nice...

I was resetting for nearly an hour to get my first Shiny Buizel, I suggest you don't just lose all hope if it takes a while... after I got her I just kept fighting and resetting and fighting until the next two showed up.

No, don't chain past 40! There's no point, honestly. After 40 your probability of getting a shiny patch doesn't increase any more.

Look, here's a graph that shows the probabilities of getting a shiny at each point in your chain (with added numbers and lines on paint lol) :

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Chaining Questions

Notice it's an exponential curve that doesn't seem to count past 40. You can't go past 40 in the formula for calculating the probabilities anyway, so that says it all really.

And here's a visual for the "ring" theory:

[PokeCommunity.com] Pokemon Chaining Questions

I just drew it on paint so it's not very good quality lol. Oh wait, the red circle in the middle is supposed to be the patch of grass where you reset the radar, I forgot to draw it in the key.

Now that's so much easier to understand! Why didn't I think of doing a visual before? XD

EDIT: Just to sum things up, you can only have one patch shaking in each ring. It's impossible to get two patches shaking in the same ring. Also, the rings don't have to be one immediately outside the other, if you get me. If not then read the next two posts.
