3rd Gen Pokemon Coordinators?

So after playing through sapphire/ruby I have to wonder whats up with the coordinator challenge? Alot of people I have met refer to them as "useless extras." Personally I believe them to be more of a challenge than an asset. What is your opinion?

So, they made it as a extra, although in emerald, you get your PKMN painted, i know that, but i dont know what happens afterward.

I personally love contests. It's fun to see how moves could be beautiful or smart as opposed to just strong.
I think it'd be great if they made a side game dedicated to contests.

It can be an additional challenge to entertain us if we got bored in all that training and stuff...
