Pokemon Crystal 251 but with FireRed mechanics

What updates to gameplay are you looking for specifically?
Other than Abilities and Natures, Fire Red is nearly as much in the stone age in terms of gameplay as Gen 2 games.
Your best bet if you want to play anything from Gen 2 with updated gameplay is looking for rom hacks made using the Polished Crystal Engine. The Polished Crystal rom hack itself (v3.0) has 253 Pokémon that can be all caught in a single playthrough, plus Abilities, natures, Physical/Special split, Fairy type, updated type chart, Gen 4 evos for Gen 1 & 2 Pokémon, and some moves and items from much later gens. And some of these features can be turned off if you don't want so much new stuff. Get the faithful version if you don't want Pokémon typing changes and other major rebalance changes.
