[Other] Pokemon Fire Red ROM Hack - Program Help

Hey guys,

I am planning on making a hack of my own, however not entirely sure where to start. Played the hacks for months over and always wanted to do my own but what programs should I use? I know Advance Map is a pretty common thing to use, so i have v1.92 downloaded, but after that im pretty stuck.

So, any help?

Inserting; Common tools:
Yape -Edits Pokémon Stats;info
Ape -Edits Pallete
Ntme -A Tilemap Editer
Infranview -Helps reduce down to 16 or 256/255 colors
unLZ
**Free Space Finder -Helps you find free space; Imporntant

Patching:
LIPS or APS or UPS. Some people decide to use differnt ones so heres the 3; that I know of atleast.

For scripting, I use Pokescript, but I'd recommend XSE, because it's alot easier for beginners, and more people use it.

Well, for now, just mess around with Advance Map making maps for the fun of it until you start to feel your maps are actually pretty nice. Keep working at it to develop your own kinda style and try posting those in the Map Rating Thread for some comments to improve it.

Once you've got that nice and under your belt, try reading a few scripting tutorials for XSE, like DiegoIsAwesome's mega XSE tutorial. It might be a little confusing at first (especially if you're not script-minded), but you should learn it pretty fast. It's like another language, but incredibly simple because all the commands are in english so i guess it's not really like another language lol ignore that.

After that, try putting the two together and start working on a hack. Most random things (ie. Pokemon, moves, items) can be really easily edited with stuff you find in the toolbox. If you want, acquire the help of others to do odd jobs (although learning it yourself doesn't hurt, either) such as inserting of random stuff. :P

Note, however, that you will almost definitely be better at either mapping or scripting, and there's no point not admitting it. You can either try to work harder on your weaker point to become an overall better hacker (like what i tried to do; boring), or just capitalise where you're good and get others to supplement your weak point (like me now lol)
