So I had an idea for a hack and I'd love to have some feedback regarding the ideas I have, and possibly further expanding the ideas and maybe getting some people on board?? {XD}
I love the place I live in, California, and would love to make a hack based on where I live, with the stereotypes, beauty, etc. I would ideally love the hack to have the entirety of California with the Channel islands and parts of Nevada. There is a LOT of diversity of regions and animals here and I think it'd be perfect for a Pokémon game. We wouldn't have just tropical, we'd have mountains and snow and beach and desert and forest.
Note: it probably won't be entirely accurate, there probably would be some deviations from the region to have some type diversity, map diversity and trainer diversity.
-The region would be Filac (Calif) backwards.
-You would have two rivals, a female and male, Eureka and Huntington. Eureka is the catchphrase gold miners used when they found gold up north, the name for the female rival. Huntington is the name of a beach I would go to a lot as a kid and continue to go to. Either that or Balboa or Corona del and those don't really fit.
-Starting location would be based in a Los Angeles type of area, get the ghetto-ness, busy-ness. Having non-organic Pokémon such as Pawniard, Magnemite, Koffing, etc.
-Areas to name a few such as Disneyland, Angel's stadium, Dodger's stadium, Golden Gate bridge, Catalina island, historic old towne places, etc. (We'd probably have to change the name to something else obviously). Something like what Gen 5 did, NYC to Castelia City.
-Trainer classes that make sense to the region, so no picknickers, campers, hex girls. You'd have things like students and a couple stereotypes Californians tend to have. :)
-Design-wise the trainers would look like they belong in the Pokémon world, but not exaggerated (Brendan with the shorts over pants, Ethan wearing a scarf but a t-shirt, etc.) it would be a little more fashionable.
A lot of the stereotypes I would like to have in the game would probably be joked about in a light-hearted and subtle manner. Ex: Californian's tend to think that everything is about them so the dialogue of the people in-game would be a little selfish or rude. another example would be the use of certain words in different regions of California. Since I live in Orange county, I use dude and bro a lot whereas Northern Californians tend to use hella (I also use it I'm the exception :P). We'd probably have to find a substitution for the word hella though.
-Not every sprite will be changed, some could be altered, I'd prefer to have the nicer looking FR style sprites.
Those are a couple of the ideas I have for the project however I do have a lot on my plate, I have two jobs, an internship, and I go to school. I do have certain days where I'm free and don't feel like hanging out with anyone so i'd love to get a little group together and work on this thing. I can map, sprite, and make very basic scripts! :)
-Music from different generations to give some homage to, and recognize some underrated pieces of route, battle and town music. EX: Route 6 from black and white having some recognition, Los Angeles having the Virbank City theme, Port towns having the Canalave City themes, etc.
I attached some photos, a gym leader, an elite four member, the female protagonists battle sprite and OW sprite, and an edited version of the youngster sprite from Emerald. I don't like the way the sprite came out for the female protagonist so it's subject to change.
Like I said, I would love some suggestions, feedback, or comments. Thank you!
