    Pokemon PRO
    A fanfiction

    Rating: Mature for violent/scary themes

Thank you for visiting my fanfiction! This storyline was intended for a comic, but then I realized that my writing is way easier to understand than my strips, so please enjoy it anyway.

Pandah is a field worker at the Pokemon Rescue Operations building. Follow through her eyes in a roller coaster story filled with danger that reveals the worst in human nature. Pandah and her coworkers want to create a world that is abuse and neglect free for all pokemon, but with the people in their reports it is going to be a tough ride.

    Ch 1: An Unexpected Call

    Prologue: Everything Starts Somewhere
The slightly annoying sound that comes from your alarm in the morning had been ringing in my ear for a while. I have a high tolerance for annoying, but the somewhat quiet ringing in the back of my head had begun to work my nerves. Flying not-so-gracefully back into reality I realized that the tone was in fact my handbook. It's kind of like a really cool cell phone that shows images of the people you are speaking to. Everyone at my work has one.

Taking a few more moments to swim back into my skin, I heard a familiar voice slipping out from under the closed handbook, "Pandah! What are you doing? Where are you?" I yawned, opening the screen so I could hear him better, "In bed, Lewie. Where else would I be at this time in the morning?"

He looked on at me with an admonishing stare, "Take a second look at your clock, Pandah. Lieutenant is going to be here in ten minutes!" Following his command my sleepy gaze turned toward the meowth that was happily guarding my clock. It took a few moments, but I knew my face churned into something horrid, because I heard my notebook laughing at me.

"God d-! I'll be there as soon as I can!" I shouted back as I ran from the room to get ready. I barely heard his reply, "Bring the paperwork with you- I'll stall for time." With a rush and a hurry I dawned my work clothes (a green and white sport suit that had a panda bear patch sewn to the front thanks to the sense of humor of one of my old bosses) and combed my mess of bubblegum hair. Giving up after a moment I slipped on a white beret to hide most of the monstrosity and rushed out the door, nearly forgetting my bag and the ever important paperwork.

Come to think of it, this is my ritual nearly every morning. I work at PRO. That stands for Pokemon Rescue Operations. We are a wildlife protection agency that deals with all sorts of abandoned and abused pokemon. In the past we have helped out in crisis to evacuate wildlife and to reunite trainers with their partners.

But today, that isn't my job. My manager is out and it is my job to make sure that our quarterly inspection goes well. Let's just say being late isn't the best impression. When I finally made it to the PRO building it was about 20 after, and my knees were shaking. As I approached the front doors they slid open automatically- as they always do- to reveal a lobby that was just what you would expect out of a lobby: White, decorated with the dull, clearance paintings no one even notices and fake potted trees. For the first time in forever, though, I hadn't noticed any of this as I stepped in. All my eyes could focus on were the two men standing in the center of the room.

One of them was Lewie, my operator. He has an unmistakable geeky appearance. Pale skin, freckles, messy dirty-blonde hair. He also chooses to actually wear the PRO uniform, a dark grey and red outfit that isn't in the least bit cool at all. My heart calmed down as I saw him and his goofy grin, however. That meant he was up to something.

He turned to the man beside him, the uniformed Lieutenant Pierce, "There she is! Did you get everything the fire department needed to send us? I told her that she would be late if she went to grab them, but she insisted that finishing up on that job was more important." There was a moment of awkward silence, but it was closely followed by a booming laugh, "That is the spirit, Pandah!!! It is people like you that this company needs!"

    He bought it…

"Haha. Thank you, sir… I guess we should get on with the inspection, then."

    Ch 1

A few hours passed and Lieutenant and I walked through every step. I couldn't believe the amount of work that went into these inspections every three months. I began to respect Ms Hayl for putting up with it. She definitely deserved her break from the work. All things considered, however, our building received a top score.

"Great job you two! I am very impressed with the work your branch has done here. I hope you can be a model for some of our… more lacking buildings."

"Sir, yes, sir!" We called in unison, standing at attention as we awaited further instruction. "I'll leave you to your business now. Don't forget to organize the medical supplies a bit more, and I'll see you in a few months." He waved a hand to us, and we dropped out of formation as he coasted through the front door.

An enormous sigh of relief echoed throughout the empty lobby, and Lewie turned to me, "Man! I'm glad that's over. Hayl is going to be very proud, you think?" I gave a squishy smile due to leftover nervousness, "I sure hope so… I don't see how she does it. He asked so many questions and wanted to see every room in the building!"

"Hey!" He threw an arm around my shoulder, "It's over now, and you did good! Relax! I'll order us some take-out while you're organizing in the supply room." "Gee, what would I ever do without you?" I grinned, half-joking half-serious. I left him to begin in the stock room, the silent concrete room and it's scent of old wood shelving comforting as I sat down to begin.

Before I could pick up, however, my handbook began to buzz. "Lewie?" I thought, "Nah, he's just in the other room…" I flipped open the top and spoke loud over the static that ensued, "Pokemon PRO? This is Pandah, how can I help you?" "Thank-- Goodness!" I barely made out through the crackling, and began to slowly see the image of a nurse Joy on my screen. I left the stockroom to try and get a better signal, but nothing worked, "You'll have to speak clearly, Joy. I can't understand you."

"Sorry## Destroyed--- parts---please** Azalea Town." I tried to make out more, but the line disconnected. I was stunned for a moment, but went quickly to talk the event over with Lewie, "Hey, I just got a strange phone call. I think it was from Azalea's nurse Joy." He looked quizzical, "What's so strange about that?"

"The fact that I couldn't hear anything she said and could barely see her picture. I think she said that something messed up her communication." Lewie scratched his head, "Well, It's not like a Joy to call PRO if it's not part of our job, so why don't you go see what's up? Maybe the town was hit by something and they need to evacuate."

"Maybe you're right…" I began to think of the possibilities, and the more that appeared the faster I began to run until I hit the road and hopped aboard my bike. I faced the sun for about 15 minutes until I hit the road south, at which point I was staring straight into Ilex forest. "Should be an easy trip through." I thought to myself, but of course; my job is never done.

If I hadn't been paying attention I would have run right over it. I swerved and had to block off a tree with my foot to keep from crashing. My bike clattered to the dirt and I hopped away to avoid being taken down in the mess. Instinctively I ran to check on my target, "Oh no! Are you ok?" I gently picked up the shell of a shuckle, cradling it in my arms and checking it's shell for damage. What I found was shocking: There was an enormous rift in the side of its shell, running in three directions from a single point where it looked like the shell had been hit by something very hard. I could see the pokemon inside, who looked already so swollen that it couldn't stick its limbs out.

I had to hold back a cry of shock as I looked into its pleading eyes that stared up from the darkness, "Who would do something like this?" As if on cue there was a loud CRACK and a WHOOF as something very fast whizzed by my ear. I turned to face the source of the sound, and that was where I met the face of a very young and short-fused looking boy with a baseball bat. "What the hell!" I stood up as I yelled at him, "Are you threatening me, you little runt?"

He smirked, "Not really. I'm just playing around with you." I glared, upset that he would think so little of something so dangerous, ""Just playing around"? Is that what this all is to you?" He didn't directly answer, "If you would, could you set my pokemon down so we can finish training?"

At that I think I felt something snap inside the back of my head, "Training? You call this training?" I emphasized to the crack on shuckle, taking closer and closer steps to the kid. Obviously not used to being stood up to he began to back off, "Hey, I'm just trying to toughen her up. Shuckle is supposed to have amazing defense, but every time we fight we always lose. I'm trying to make her stronger so we can win!"

I must have become very fearsome because he fell to his rear, dropping the bat and reaching for a pokeball kept at his belt as I screamed, "THIS isn't training, brat! This is abuse! Do you know how long it will take her to heal from something like this?" He was speechless, letting me continue, "I'm taking you both under temporary custody, and you can answer to the police when we reach town!"

This seemed to draw some words out of him, "Wh-what? No! I didn't do anything wrong! Get away from me!" He scrambled as he tried to run. I snarled after him, "You don't want to do that, kid."

    "Hey!"

In all the commotion I hadn't heard my notebook turn on. Lewie was on the other line, and he had apparently heard my outburst, "Calm down, Pandah. Yelling at him won't solve anything." I took a deep breath, "You're right… Sorry, it won't happen again." I turned to the boy, "Ok, let's test your training then. You obviously have other pokemon. If your other pokemon are strong enough to beat mine, then I'll allow you to go and have your shuckle back. If not, you come with me. Deal?"

I could nearly see the gears working as he went over the statistics, "Ok… Deal! But my pokemon is super strong. I feel sorry for yours." "Whatever, runt." We both took the customary steps away to create a legal battle space, then turned to face one another. The ball in my hand was cold as I withdrew it from my side bag, allowing it to expand within my grip to its full size. I could feel heat burning behind my eyes, but I tried hard not to show it. I was always ashamed when I showed this fiery side. It always meant trouble, and always came out when I was on an abuse rescue mission. As calmly as I could, I threw out my pokeball to meet his. There was a blaze of light and two figures appeared in the center.

His monferno cried, meeting the challenge with as much passion as his trainer. I figured that the boy must have been used to this, and was upset when shuckle didn't meet battling with as much valor. My jolteon, however, was about to teach him a valuable lesson. It looked at monferno blankly, then began to run in circles playfully, trying to coax the other pokemon into following. The boy nearly fell over with laughter, "I- is that it? It's so…. Tiny!"

It was true. My Bolt was the product of a breeder gone horribly wrong. We had found many scared and deceased miniature jolteon just like him locked inside of a farm house. I won't even go into the details. They are repulsive.

I grinned, "He may be small, but he is more powerful than a normal sized jolteon. Give him a go." A disbelieving look struck out across his face, and he shouted out, "Get it, Monferno! No mercy!" Monferno answered with a fierce strike to Bolt. Well, to where Bolt used to be. It only took a blink and he was behind monferno, pressing his tiny paws against its back and nipping at his ears in another attempt at play. It only resulted in the pokemon crying out and lashing again. Bolt, again, was too quick, and was now about a foot away and yipping a cry that sounded nearly fake, "Jolt!"

I couldn't help but chuckle, "What's wrong? I thought you weren't going to give him any mercy." The boy stomped his foot, "That's not fair! Just because your pokemon is faster doesn't mean it's stronger!" I was about to retort, but Lewie's voice interrupted, "Pandah, you need to hurry! Nurse Joy needs you in town. Make this thing quick!" I smirked devilishly, turning back to the battle, "Alright, have it your way, runt. Bolt! Thunderbolt!"

The forest instantaneously turned the color of a fluorescent bulb. For a half a moment there was a linger of color.. It flickered, and much to the dismay of the kid his monferno wasn't able to take the blinding shock. He sat in horror and disbelief at the scene, awoken only by the pat of my hand on his shoulder, "Don't worry, babe. You will probably get it easy from the cops, but your mom will be another story."

The truth in my words could be read in the size of his pupils.
