My original intent in creating this game was to create a new way of looking at pokemon. As a retired battler, I've always found pokemon to be more complex than it at first seemed, but all the same a little kiddy if you ask me. I wanted to create a pokemon for the older fan, a pokemon of art and sound and story rather than just gameplay. The story of this game is, in my opinion, very dark and compelling. The most important point being that it is nothing like any pokemon game you have seen thus far. It would be much appreciated if you could critique me on whether this would flop or start a new generation of pokemon. Without further ado, the all-important story:*may look bad as it was originally written in notepad...
    Spoiler:

    Features:
    1) The seasonal system.
    Spoiler:

    2) The EP system.
    Spoiler:

    3) All those other things (all pokemon) you would come to expect...
    4) Second gen starters.

Obviously there would be a lot of work and a lot of writing, but I'll find a way. However, I still do need a scripter as I am very old-fashioned, (i.e, the designing type, not scripting type)

  • It was interesting, but the main reason why people aren't reading it is because it's just a block of text :c Separate your text into paragraphs, to make reading it more manageable, it makes it easier to look at :3

    Keep it up, kiddo :D

  • Woweeee. @_@ This is a little like something I was writing - my story had politics, and conflicts, and a bit of war at the end. The further I got into it, the more I realized that writing history is HARD. But you. You know what you're doing. :3 Go you.

The idea behind the game is probably too complex for the majority of pokemon enthusiasts to appreciate, as indicated by the quality of the stuff I've seen on the roleplay forums. People like to imagine Pokemon as happy little critters who always obey. There is always a Team of villains who have short-sighted goals and always learn the errors of their ways. Players expect to skip through the RPG smoothly raising Pokemon and defeating everyone in their way. Your idea goes way, waaay beyond that.

But I'm not saying it's bad. It's fantastic. I'd love to read more about the plotline. If you like Pokemon, there must be a niche of people who aren't afraid of 'walls of text' and complex, realistic settings.

If your game doesn't get anywhere, though, would you consider posting it on the roleplay forum? That's what I plan to do with my abortive idea. Maybe we could mash up the two worlds. (:

    "There's already a game called this "

Try to think outside the box.

I thank you kindly, but I've been working out some of the finer details of this game on paper. I also have a reason for calling it pokemon quartz, as it symbolizes an important part of the plot that I'll summarize below.

Behr's father was an honest and hard-working man who remained neutral throughout the war, not wanting to get swept into politics too much. But soon the lady Kac became pregnant with Behr, and a marriage already struggling economically was brought into deeper trouble with a baby in the mix of things.

Jura (Behr's father), begins work in the night shift at the Nempuc Mines. Unfortunately, the pay still doesn't cover the cracks, so he enters into a downward spiral of overtime. The third day that Jura worked late, when all others had returned home to sleep through the day, and the faint sounds of the morning creatures could be heard echoing in the mines, a discovery was made. A diamond, of the brightest and most pure quality imaginable was mined up by a mere peasant drowning in a sea of black coal and blacker (ummm...) debt. He stuffe it nonchalantly into his pocket, knowing if here were caught it would be seized ad he could be imprisoned.

At the entrance of the mine, Jura was, unfortunatley, searched. As the blood rushed red and hot into his face, it became obvious to the security that he was hiding something. But all they found was a piece of dirty quartz (for the three o' clock light was not nearly as good as it should have been), and the security let Jura go.

The first few days after the incident, Jura worked feverishly upon his diamond. He wished to make something that would reflect the true beauty of his country, something that would smile upon even the heart of Arceus. Trapped inside of that 'Quartz' was the true spirit of Chimiera, waiting to spring out from the grey mask of stoicism. This would be for his darling Kac, for no amount of money could represent the love he had for his country (the true beauty of it), and for his wife.

And yet, there was still not enough money. Jura fell deeper into the hole of work he had made for himself, and his co-workers seemed only to resent the socialism more by each passing day. They began to stockpile weapons in the mine, and Jura did not quabble. Perhaps that is because he, too, was restless about the revolution even after all his years of neutrality. It may have also been because he was now a man defeated, ready to surrender to the strongest opinion due to his hunger and sleep-deprivation.

Nonetheless, revolutionary sentiment only grew in that mine unabated. This attracted the attention of the government, as one might expect. Jura was working late (or rather early) and alone one morning and found himself confronted by the secret police. They questioned him about the whereabouts of his 'comrades'. He didn't know, and subsequently was beaten and shot. Bleeding profusely, with the police walking away yet unsated in their search, Jura began to realize. He saw that this was the end, not only for him but of the few truly beautiful places left in the world. Crying, sobbing, cringing, he wrote in his own blood the only thing he wanted still to be known: 'Let color return'.

The day that occured on was October 11, 1979...And on that day the world turned a shade greyer. Kac gave birth to Behr in her apartment only a week later. Only a few days before that, she found Jura's workshop, with the srude and unfinished diamond, in the abandoned storehouse across the city. On the day she dies, she gives Behr the 'quartz' (never telling him it's a diamond for fear that he'll sell it) and tells him the story of his father. Behr spends the rest of the game searching for the small places left in the world that still hold color, free from the grey mask of stoicism and from poolitics.

The game would employ mainly grey palattes with one or two places portrayed in color (probably Nerdal and somewhere else). The game will also have a very interesting evolution system that I may explain in a few days.

Huhh...Sometimes, for the noblest of men, there are causes worth more than the common buck. Jura wanted to stand up for something greater than himself, something he truly believed in.

And besides, you don't think a government ruled by aristocrats would just idly accept the selling of a diamond by man in a poor family?

I'm also designing the world map, but my head nearly exploded when I realized the amount of work behind making the route outline...

What was his cause? He was going to present his family with a nice, polished diamond - and then what? As for selling it, they must have had a black market. Most places do.

When he said that, he meant that Jura was sick and tired of the black and white world around him and wanted to show
everyone that there can still be something beautiful, even in a dark era of war... at least, that's my theory. Am I about right?

It's for this same reason that he wouldn't sell it. I mean, why would he? Why would he sell something that could bring light and colour back to the world that had all but drowned in it's own dark intentions? Some things are meant to kept, and not sold for a small profit.

So what? There's a perfectly good reason for it being called Quartz. Besides, Nearly every name is taken anyway.

Oh SNAP!! I'm on the second page! That's what I get for trying to apply myself to a clique that doesn't exist. Perhaps I'll just turn this into a play.
Oh SNAP! I'm drowning under a flood of new and unrealistic ideas! Help me!

P.S. If anyone is still out there, here me out for my newest update: An event list.
    Spoiler:

I fully realize none of the above levels are final, but, I'll try my best.

<Pokemon Quartz Name got any significance? Otherwise, you really gotta lose it...------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------>
    -PRE-WAR-
The game region or, rather, world in which Quartz takes place is Chimiera ...name sounds like Chimera.[/Ibetthat'ssignificant]. It is a large country that
had a long history of thriving socialism I never thought I'd see anything like that in a pkmn story. You got my attention now.... However, this game's backstory starts off in an age of unrest which
began with a small group of lower-class revolutionaries unhappy with the current regime. Looming conflict
soon grew from being a threat to a an inevitable reality, and civil war broke out. The fighting began with
Cher's Rebellion You even named it xD..., a loss for the capitolists but a telling reminder of the dormant power of the civilian
    class.

The truth is, Chimiera was never a very friendly nation. It had many enemies, especially under its
most recent dictator, Krevitz Benicy BEN-EE-CHEE?, and none wished anything greater than to destroy the last Last? Unlike disco, it could always rise up again... socialist
society. Seeing an opportunity, many rival nations Any of which we know of? of Chimiera suppoted the revolutionaries by by giving them
powerful and rare pokemon. It soon became apparent to the Chimieran army that they were up against more than
just a small team of uprising workers. In fact, the intentions of both parties soon became less subtle and as a
result full-scale war broke out. Genzan (One of the leading supporters of the capitalists) betryaed the revo-
lutionaries to satisfy its own wishes to seize control of Chimiera If I understand that correctly, it's just a betrayal cliche, yes?. But even without their gretest ally, the
'New Chimieran' Army plowed on in hopes of making a democracy.

    -WAR-
Battles were brutal both to pokemon and their trainers. The government was significantly wearied from
fighting off several armies at once, and was becoming desperate and vicious in its search to crush what it still
only considered a rebellion. Towns were burnt to cinders I long for the day that you walk though a destroyed town in a pkmn game. I forsee absolutely no background music in such a grim place..., pokemon shot in front of their trainers' eyes, and
city streets were occupied with tanks (not all fighting was with pokemon) I once played with a warring theme...I ended up throwing it outta the bag because reconciling pkmn combat and 'IRL warfare' seems pretty impossible. Bullets can 'kill' pkmn, and Psychic types can redirect bullets to their sources. How would a pokemon army fight a bunch of armoured tanks? I'd bet the Chimieran army had some trainers carrying Normal types and other generic pkmn that would be useless against tanks....

The war went on for several years without any decisive moves on any side, until the day of October 11,
1979 What year is it now?. On this day, two impotant events coincided to create what is known as today 'Black Tuesday' ...oh well, it SOUNDS pass-able.: the Battle of
Nerdal and the assassination of the President of Genzan, Merril Sosro, as well as several of his important cab-
inet members at the hands of unknown mercenaries. The Battle of Nerdal showed the height of the Chimieran dic-
tator's desperation and the necesity for him to win the war. Releazing that he couldn't keep holing out after
all this time with regular pokemon alone, Benicy (Krevitz) decided to invoke the ultimate avatar of vengeance:
Arceus, bringer of the apocalypse You're kidding, right? It all was good 'til here.... Benicy knew full well the dangers that existed in unleashing Arceus Okay, but how did he know where to get the Azure Flute?: namely
having the world be split in two Literally?. He didn't care. In battle, Arceus was summoned, glanced blankly at the batt-
ling hordes of men below, and cast its judgement What does that entail? not only on the field of Nerdal, but what is believed to this
day to be the judgement of the world. Nerdal and all those who stood upon fell silent as the serenly beautiful
Arceus shined bright with the light of the universe. And with that, every pokemon on the field disappeared Did he take them to somewhere akin to the Mirage Kingdom?.

When Benicy got news of these events, he immediately knew what was required of him and his people. The
Treaty of Rhuntekhavt You've got some fun names here... hastily written and brought to the League of Nations *applause* only two months later. It esablished
several things, the most important of which being the creation of a border between Chimiera the old and Chimiera
the new. On Christmas Day of that year, capitalist delegates from New Chimiera signed the treaty.

    -POST-WAR-
The Treaty of Rhuntekhavt began a new era for Chimiera, but ended another. According to the treaty, Gen-
zan would cede power to Chimiera because of the crippling costs of the war and the lack of a central government
after Black Tuesday. For the two countries, there was a very long road toward finding common ground, but all at
least agreed the first step had been taken This is excellent so far. How you would transmit all of this stuff to the unmotivated public in a beginning cutscene that they are likely to skip remains to be seen....

Still, all was not as well as it had at first seemed. The new democratic government put in place by the
people in New Chimiera proved itself more oppresive and corrupt than Benicy had been Oh, how ironic.... To add to the tension, a
new organization which had the power to make and interpret laws concerning pokemon, known as the PTO
(Pokemon Trainer Organization), was put in place under the treaty. The PTO Parent-Teacher Organisation? That's the first thing that comes to mind when I see that acronym... was and is the heart of beaurocracy,
and it used its power to help organized crime smuggle pokemon and contraban. The organization was created to
help organize and unify a system of pokemon battling, but had its message lost at the hands of the corrupt Good, but then what?.
Unfortunately, even though the President realized there was a problem, he was powerless to stop them. With his
approval dwindling, the popular congress did everything in their power to deny every bill the President tried to
pass Now this is becoming a history-textbook writing lesson. You leave out the fluff and leave in the stuff that people are interested in hearing. You do plan on making most of this info available via NPCs, right? This would make an incredibly long+slow beginning... The public was tired and angry, and although they didn't want more conflict, were fully prepared to def-
    end themselves Guns or pkmn?.

    -BEHR'S STORY-
That was 15 years ago 1979+15=1994 Another 15 years ago.... The actual game starts off in a city called Nempuc (pronounced Nem-pus), specif-
ically in New Chimiera. In this city, your character, default Behr I thought naming my region after a stomach pain reliever was silly, but naming your protagonist after a paint company is even better..., lives with his mother in a small apartment
on the third floor of their building. Behr is a 15-year-old boy THANK YOU for slaying the 10 year-old cliche... with a strong sense of adventure and intell-
igence even though his mother can only afford to put clothes on his back and give him the occasional cold din-
ner. He also follows the path of justice, a virtue he obtained after he learned of the death of his father How?. He
has natural suspicions of the elistist-ruled, oppresive government in which he lives. The day is Black Tuesday.
Behr's mother, Kac (pronounced like Cass), thinks on all the past trainers in her family and decides she'll
never get anywhere keeping Behr with her forever. So, she buys him a rare pokemon from the market, spending all
her savings in the process. The pokemon Behr receives gives him the courage and determination to try to be a
pokemon trainer. However, the world is not as accepting of him as previous characters might have been. The PTO
refuses his application for a trainer card Ooh, yes.. Pokemarts won't sell him pokeballs because they think he doesn't
deserve to be a trainer ...that's not very store-like. Stores like sales. Therefore, wouldn't a better reason be that he is not licensed with the PTO? I s'pose your reason could work if pkballs are in short supply.... To make matters only worse, Behr's mother falls ill because she can no longer afford
the medicine she needs Just speaking generically, or does she have some 'special illness' requiring 'special treatment'?. Although Behr is still struggling as a trainer, he is both saddened and now willful to
avenge his mother She dies? and defeat the elitist regimes which so plague Chimiera Does that include a coup?. Travelling alone and without a home,
Behr finds it becoming harder and harder to hold on to what he has. Soon, he collapses in the next town outside
of Nempuc because of so many days eating only scraps. Prof. Pine ...Professor Pine is probably part of a long lineage of Professor Pines. Actually, his/her son/daughter probably exists in other fangames... is perhaps the only one left in the world who
has any faith in Behr, and in seeing his tremendous plight, lets Behr come to an audition back in Nempuc with
other city kids to compete for a pokedex. After getting a pokedex from the audition, Behr starts to gain respect.

Is there more than this? This is primarily backstory...but, hey, this is pretty cool and definitely not the norm. If there's anything I could do to help, zip me a PM...

EDIT: @guy above me-that's how a story is s'posed to be, fully-baked and without any severe holes or cliches...something that cannot be said of most of the stuff around here. TBH, I think it's too short...

Aww... really? But you're actually the first person besides Rabbit to actualy have read the story. And for that, I thank you.
    Krevitz Benicy BEN-EE-CHEE?
    It's pronounced ben-ee-cee
Chimiera can be pronounced in one of two ways: chim-ay-rah or kim-harr-ah (roll the r's almost to sound like an l)
Okay, but how did he know where to get the Azure Flute?
Actually, in Chimiera, legands can alternatively be summoned through a blood ritual. Seeing as how Benicy was at the brink of insanity (and he committed suicide after the revolution), he didn't care what happened to him so long as he won. And yes, I realize it sounds a little lame, but I was trying to portray the supposed "god" of all pokemon in a more BA light.
Did he take them to somewhere akin to the Mirage Kingdom?
Towards the end of this game (even though it's not mentioned in the event list), you enter a mirror universe (based on the philosophy of infinite universes) and find Arceus and all the pokemon. You also find a world where the revolution never happened, and this is what spurs you to try and change your own universe.

At the end of the game, you witness a battle between the gang (Korsikov), which was betrayed by the government (PTO), and the New Chimieran army helplessly trying to mediate. You see your friend and rival Caryn (I'll PM you the script once I finish typing it up) trampled, and your goodwill turns to a hatred for the cruel world.

In the final cutscene of the story of this game, Cher takes you back to his house, and convinces you that an era of change is upon the world again. He tells you the only way to save the world from its nearly inevitable destruction is by joining with Korsikov. You agree, and another 15 years pass before the sequel begins... Basically in the sequel you start off as a vengeful assassin living in Cher's house. I haven't really gone very far past that.

P.S. As for the death of Behr's father, it's the big post down below. If you have a specific job you'd want to do, just PM me.

  • wooow!! the storyline is just awesome!
It is incredible how you take the subject matter of the game to turn it into something deeper and human, as it is the poverty, the politics and the diseases ... sadly dont know anything of programming and the only thing that I can offer you is my moral support in order that you continue forward...
    Good luck!!!
