Hi everyone, I have a quick question about changing NPC's.
I was wondering what the easiest way to change NPCs names and Pokemon are for rom hacking?(Want to change Pokemon Fire Red)
I have been thinking about trying to install porymap for Pokefire, but before I do I was wondering if there is an easier way to just change these 2 things. I also have RPG maker and have scripted a bit there.
When playing through games like Radical red or other enhance games I wanted to take a crack at it.
    Thanks for all your help

First, welcome to the community hope you enjoy it here.

But you've kind of put this in the wrong section, if you're planning to work with pokefirered and porymap, those are actually decomps.
So if asking about those you should use the decomp help section.

But if you using regular fire red and trying to edit an existing rom file instead of building one with a compiler than this is the right place.

Edits to a existing rom, are called binary rom hacks.
Changing what you want in that method is pretty simple, but it involves scripting and use of a trainer editor.

Luckily there are some very user friendly tools available for binary rom hacks that could make that easier, I recommend you do a search for Hex Maniac Advance and download the latest version to use. Its an almost all in one tool, that can be used for nearly every facet of rom hacking.

As of now the only thing a dedicated program is better is for map editing and scripting.

The binary tools for each are advance map 1.92 and xse xtreme script editor.

Each relevant npc has an assigned name, if they are a trainer you can easily find that in hma, and change it to whatever you want.

But that aside the only way we know anyone's name, is because its written in a text box. That's where the scripting comes in.
You'd use advance map, and click on the npc icon as seen in the program in every map they appear, and change the text they say to refer to the name you want them to use.

    Then save and you're done.

If you're using regular fire red then try what I said, and look up some antrhoyd youtube vids on scripting as well.

If you are using decomp pokefirered than I can't help and I recommend making another thread in the decomp help section.

    Good luck.
