Pokemon TCG Tourney [Under Construction]

Okay, I had hashed out some core ideas with my co-host in PMs:

1. It's going to be over played using RedShark, preferably.

2. Day One will be a sign-up day to participate in the tournament.

3. There will be 3 Swiss rounds, one for each day of the last 3 days of the Get-Together.

4. The rankings will be determined by record first, and then by total margin of prizes taken, meaning that someone who goes 3-0 and takes 6 prizes each match while having their opponents take 1 prize combined will be considered as having a better record than someone who goes 3-0 and takes 6 prizes each match while every opponent of theirs takes 5.

5. Pairings will be drawn randomly for round one, and the based on records for rounds two and three.

6. The winner's prize should be an emblem. The issue will be designing one.

7. We should make catch-all rulings in case of alleged cheating, since it'll be hard to verify.

8. We will need to come up with a proper play etiquette guideline for RedShark in particular, since it'll be slightly different from playing online. I will get some together after I play a match over RedShark.

9. We will probably need to write instructions on how to properly install RedShark and Hamachi. I will tackle this.

And that's all I can remember off the top of my head right now. Any other ideas or suggetions?

We will have to determine whether it will be modified or unlimited, and if modified, we'll have to have clear guidelines as to what falls under the modified format. I vote modified, we can allow proxies for people who have unlimited cards in their deck, seeing as you can't regulate that anyway.

Obviously Redshark is ideal, but in order to be inclusive to those who may not be able to/willing to install new software just for the weekend, perhaps we should add MSN as a viable medium as well. I think it worked perfectly fine when you and I tried it.

As for cheating, I don't really know. It'll probably have to be on a case-by-case basis. I'm familiar with penalties regarding regular gameplay errors (forgetting to place prize cards, playing trainers in a trainer lock, etc.), but I don't know how to moderate plain old taking advantage of the fact that your opponent can't see what you're doing.

For Redshark etiquette, it's pretty straight-forward. It's very easy to make gameplay errors because the program doesn't stop you from doing things that are against the rules, but it does lay out what each person's action was. It's a simple program, but not particularly easy to follow, especially if you're new at it.

I was thinking of net-decking some decks into .dek files for people to download if they use RedShark, just to speed up the process.

I guess we can include IM clients as a viable method.

I was thinking of requiring the PMing/posting of a match log to one of us to verify that a match was played properly. Other alleged cheating, if it is alleged after a match result is sent, should result in a loss for both players, I think.

EDIT:

I made up some emblems in the last half hour. Are they passable? Or does someone else want to try?

Also, we need to come up with the accompanying text for each one.

We wouldn't be sifting through all the logs unless someone claimed an issue, right? Technically, the official stance is that once the match is completed you don't issue game losses for things that happened during the game; you have to realize it before the game is over. This is why I think cheating should be addressed case-by-case, errors that would have warranted a penalty during a game that is already over will have to be ignored, but purposeful cheating could result in something like being removed from the tourny. I don't see any reason to issue game losses to both players, unless they were both cheating.

I'm not really sure about the netdecking idea. You would have to decide whether you choose tier one decks and give some people a great advantage, or choose lower tier decks and put them at a disadvantage. I don't think you need to worry about time if they're going to have the entire first day to make up a redshark decklist.

So what are your thoughts on modified vs. unlimited?

I forgot to change that game loss bit after adding in the thoughts of adding a match log. We'd only review them if someone had an issue with something in the match.

I think unlimited would be a fine format. I don't think we'd need to make a ban list simply because there probably won't be too many people who have or know about the game-breaking cards.

Sounds good to me.

So the main issues are getting a RedShark/Hamachi install guide up and creating the first post of the event, neither of which should be too difficult to do tomorrow night for me. Oh, and would you mind writing up some etiquette for RedShark? Hopefully it's similar enough to the general guidelines I made over in the TCG section that you won't have to change much.

We also should probably also request time zones in GMT +/- format from the people sign up so we can try to keep Round 1 pairings in similar time zones, and try to do the same if possible with the later rounds, to increase the odds of getting a match played. I was also thinking of requesting times that the users know they're going to be available.

And, lastly, what do you think of the Emblems I made and posted above? We will need "flavor" text to accompany them.

The emblems look good, nice job. I'm not very up on graphic design so that should probably not be left up to me. The only idea I had for it was the images from the original world championship trainer cards:
https://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/9/90/100_T_NO1TRAINER1.jpg
https://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/c/c3/100_T_NO2TRAINER1.jpg
https://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/b/b6/100_T_NO3TRAINER1.jpg

But I thought they're probably too much, the images have a lot going on. I'm not picky about what we choose. I'm not sure what you mean by 'flavour text'; you mean the "1st place winner etc." text?

By requesting time, do you mean we'll have to run it by someone higher up before we select the times? I'm on UTC-4, but I don't know what a good standard time would be.

And sure, I'll make up a post about redshark. Where will the main thread be located? I'll put the post about redshark in there.

Something like the stuff that accompanies the emblems that currently exist. Maybe something witty or some ultra-nerdy TCG reference.

Asking for those times is mostly to make it so that a match has a higher chance of being played if two members think that they'll available at the same time.

Well, it'll be located in the Main Get-Together forum, so either just PM me it or post it in the Play Online sticky in the TCG section since that doesn't have RedShark guidelines yet.

"No. 1 Trainer', "No. 2 Trainer", etc. would be a pretty nerdy reference.
I'll make up the redshark post later today.

So I'm reading the "play TCG online" sticky, and I'm not sure what else you'd like me to add to it. I think the best thing to do would be to have the general rules as a first post on the official TCG get-together thread.

Edit: and sure, that catchphrase will work

Ok sure, I havn't used it many times online but I'm sure I can think of a few other things. Let me know when the thread goes up and I'll stick it there.

Here's what I got for the post:

Tournament Game Plan

  • Day One: Sign Up!
  • Day Two: Round One!
  • Day Three: Round Two!
  • Day Four: Round Three!
  • End of Get-Together: Results Tallied and Prizes Given!

Permitted playing methods:

  • Redshark
  • Instant Messages

Helpful Links

  • PokeCommunity Get-Together Pokemon TCG Tournament!

    What is this?

To put it simply, this is a tournament involving decks of cards from the Pokemon TCG. All actual cards are legal, as long as you can find it in PokeGym's Research Tower.

    • The only banned cards for this event that you can find in the Research Tower are: _______'s Pikachu and Ancient Mew, since it's easy for a member to give a fake birthday and it's not easy to find the correct translation of Ancient Mew

How It Will Work:

The tournament will follow the schedule listed to the right under "Tournament Game Plan". YOU ONLY HAVE 24 HOURS FROM WHEN PAIRINGS ARE POSTED TO PLAY YOUR MATCH! Matches will be arranged by both record and time zone to increase the odds that more matches will actually get to be played. First and second place will get shiny emblems as a prize. And you'll get a match for participating, as long as you manage to get a match in.

What Info We Need From You:

  • The time zone you're in
  • Times you'll be available online

This is all just to make it so you actually have a better chance of playing your match by making it against someone who will be online at the same time as you.

Tournament Play Rules

  1. STANDARD PLAYING RULES APPLY
    • THE ONLY RULE THAT CAN BE WAIVED IS THE MULLIGAN RULE, BUT ONLY IF BOTH PLAYERS AGREE TO WAIVE THE RULE
  2. Play with the deck as it's dealt to you! Don't fudge your turn if it doesn't benefit you!
    • That would be cheating, and cheating is unsportsmanlike and is NOT TOLERATED when you go to official events!
    • You also don't learn anything about the game or how well your deck plays if you cheat!
  3. Let your opponent know when and which Pokemon of yours has been knocked out.
  4. If your opponent asks to "see" your discard pile, list the cards for them.
  5. It is a MUST that you make your every play known, short of when you shuffle the cards in your hand around.
    • For cards going from your hand to your deck, simply stating how many cards you are shuffling back into your deck will suffice, unless the card says to show it to your opponent before shuffling it in.
  6. If you use a Pokemon Power, you must ask your opponent if he or she will use Power Spray or the Power of the Mysterious Treasures Alakazam to counter it before moving on with your turn. NO EXCEPTIONS!
