After playing through the game, I have finally figured out where Sun and Moon go in the Pokemon timeline. First, let me go over what we do know:
Its pretty obvious that Gen 7 occurs at the latest point in the timeline currently. Blue mentions that Red is no longer the champion of the Indigo League, Dexio and Sina mention their adventures in Kalos, and the Rotom dex was developed by Oak and Sycamore. These indicate that its at the end of the timeline.
But there is an even more clear bit of evidence: Anabel. Many may not remember that she was part of the battle frontier. During the Ultra Beast segment of the post game, Looker explains how she joined the International Police. Looker was part of a three-man team in Alola trying to eliminate an Ultra Beast. After the Ultra Beast killed one of the team, an Ultra Wormhole opened. The Ultra Beast escaped and out of the wormhole came Anabel, who had partial amnesia. The kicker is that Looker says this mission was 10 years ago.
So Sun and Moon must have occurred about 10 years after the events of Emerald. Probably 2 years after X and Y. Did I miss anything?
- Gen 1 and Gen 3 occurred around the same time.
- Gen 2 and Gen 4 occurred three years after Gen 1 and Gen 3.
- Gen 5 occurs a few years after Gen 2 and Gen 4
- The Gen 5 sequels and Gen 6 occur 2 years after the first Gen 5 games.
