When your trying to get a pokemon in group A do you have to get the amount of steps required in one day, or is it total steps on that path?

Say i was trying to get an Abra from the town outskirts path, would i have to walk 5000+ steps in one day, or total on that path?

The required steps are all based on the day, not the route. Meaning if you were on a different route and got 5000 steps, and then returned from your stroll to move to the Town Outskirts route, you'd retain the 5000 steps, and therefore still be able to get Abra. Only once the steps reset at midnight will you have to worry about getting more steps again.

Edit: Also try to keep in mind what Pokémon type you have in to help reduce the amount of steps. And each stroll has only one of the two available Pokémon for each group. So sometimes, even if you have enough steps, you may get Voltorb instead of Abra. If so, you should return from your stroll and try again...
