Well, in Emerald, i've got a Male Mightyena Lv. 24 or so, A female Mightyena Lv. 26, Two Poochyena's I caught, and one that I bred from my Mightyena's. I train my Mightyena's alongside Sceptile (Lv. 49 I think), Sabelye (Almost Lv. 30), and Manetric (Just evolved at Lv. 25) and recently beat Winona....


ANyways, it appears my studies were wrong in one way: Mightyena is NOT the best starter because of it's sheer stats. ZIGZAGOON (and maybe Linoone?) is. Not because of stats, because the stats are pretty decent, but....well....it has the l33test movepool.

I use a Zigzagoon Lv. 15 as my HM slave...it knows Surf, Secret Power, Rock Smash, and Cut. When I was teaching Electrike Thunderbolt, it said Zigzagoon could learn it too. When I was teachnig Castform Thunder, it said Zigzagoon could learn it. Yeah, now I'm scared of Ziggy Zaggy Racoons >_>
