Through the history of Pokemon we've had some sort of battle facility since the times of Pokemon Crystal. The purpose of these facilities has always been to give us a little something extra to do at the end of the game beside the usual catch, raise, battle routine. We've seen many different reincarnations of the various battle facilities.
Starting in Pokemon Crystal, we were graced with what was later a staple to the Pokemon games, the Battle Tower. The tower was made to test your skills as a trainer by having you face off against various trainers in groups of 7. The goal was to get a winning streak that couldn't be matched. Once you made it to a specific number of wins, you got to face off against the champion of that tower(not in Crystal. Started in Emerald).
In Ruby and Sapphire, the tower made a reappearence ad was further defined in the next installment Pokemon Emerald.
Emerald gave us the first major change to the Pokemon Battle Tower with the inclusion of other additional Battle Facilities. This made the Battle Frontier. A theme park of sorts where trainers could gather and test their skills. Emerald's Battle Frontier boasts the most battle facilities in the game each with special rules and ways of battle.
Battle Tower: Stays its traditional way. You enter in with your team of personal Pokemon and test your capabilities.
Battle Palace: The Player doesn't control his Pokemon. Instead the Pokemon will use its moves randomly based on its Nature.
Battle Factory: The Player has to use special rented Pokemon to do battle in this facility. Other than the rented aspect, its fairly similar to the Battle Tower. Once you defeat an opponent, you get to choose which one of the opponent's Pokemon you'd like to add to your team and replace one of your rented Pokemon.
Battle Pyramid: This was more a test of your survival skills than battle skills. You enter an area with wild Pokemon and have to navigate around until you find the exit. You can only use Items you find within the Pyramid making it all the more difficult.
Battle Dome: Arguably the ancestor to the PWT. The Battle Dome is a tournament styled location. By its description you have to battle various NPC trainers in a Tournament bracket setting.
Battle Arena: A more strict Battle Facility. You are only allowed 2 Pokemon and can only go for three rounds. If you don't knock out your opponent, you are judged with them based on your battle performance.
Battle Pike: This one was more guess and luck as you can pass through without battling many people. You are given a description of each room before you enter then you get to test your luck.
Generation 4's Platinum lowered the number of Facilities but kept the overall theme of the Battle Frontier intact.
In Platinum, the Battle Frontier consisted of the Battle Tower, Battle Factory, the new Battle Arcade, the new Battle Castle, and the new Battle Hall.
Battle Arcade has a bingo board like screen where you get to play Roulette. You can choose what kinda effect the battles can have. Skilled trainers can keep nothing but beneficial effects for their side. Some effects include Poisoning the opponent, Paralyzing yourself, switching teams with the opponent, and activate a weather effect.
The Battle Castle had a more simple battle approach. Inside you received special currency that could be used between rounds for various add ons, such as identifying your opponent's Pokemon, recovering your team, adding a specific hold item to one of your Pokemon, and either raising or lowering the levels of Pokemon.
The Battle Hall is a little more strict. This is a purely one on one battle and you have to face off against 10 people rather than 7. Its a much harder set up as you can't use team dynamics and have to rely on just one Pokemon to pull you through.
Johto's rendition of the Battle Frontier is the same as Sinnoh's.
Next we move to Unova. In Unova, the iconic Battle Tower was replaced with the subterranean Battle Subway. All the rules were set the same with a bonus of having two different bosses for different sets of battles. You get to fight against both in doubles.
In Black 2 and White 2 we gained another addition, the Pokemon World Tournament, where you could face off not only against random NPCs, but both Gym Leaders and Recognized Champions for older games as well as a few real world counterparts.
Moving to Kalos, we have two new facilities, the Battle Maison which again replaces the Subway and Tower, but has 4 leaders. One for each battle type that can be participated in. The other is the Battle Chateau, where you fight against mostly rich NPCs under the hierarchy names Duke, Duchess, Baron, Earl, Viscount, etc. All are British nobility ranks. With-in the Battle Chateau you are also able to rechallenge the various Gym Leaders of Kalos as well as both the Elite 4 and the Champion outside of the Elite 4's League hall.
With the possibility of the extended games as we usually have an extended version, the possibility of the old Facilities as well as new facilities emerges.
What sorta facility would you like to return?
Personally I'd like for them to go big and give us Battle Frontier annexed to Kiolude City, keeping the Maison in place of the tower, along with all 4 owners, and bring back some of the older Facilities like Battle Factory, Arcade, Hall, Castle would be fitting, and Arena or Palace. I'd also like the PWT brought back in a different area of the map so its not associated with the Battle Frontier.
What mixture would you like to see? If there are other ideas, feel free to share them.
