At the end of the QuakeCon, John Carmack made an announcement that Quake3 source code will be released shortly. What will this mean?

It will mean that the source code of the game (the "blue-print" if you want) will be released and can be modified by everyone if it will be public! o_o

Oh my brother will be excited by this. XD

I haven't played yet. Any good?

No, I mean, what will this mean for iD Software, and GNU (since it will be GPL). I am not so stupid as to not know what "source code" means :-P

id has done this before with Doom, Doom II, and others. GNU won't be affected at all since GNU has nothing to do with Quake III. ALl this will mean is that id will have another GPL licensed game.

It's nice for the games and coding communities to be able to go behind the scenes again though. A team I'm a member of is writing a 3D game at the moment.
