Question about Breeding for IVs

I recently started breeding Pokemon to better my chances of getting a 100 win streak in the Battle Tower, and after learning how to EV train, get egg moves, and teach smart movesets to my Pokemon, I still can't get a grip on IVs. I understand the concept of IVs, but there are still some aspects of it that are unclear to me. Say I wanted to breed something like this...

    Golduck @ Salac Berry
Timid: 252 spd, 252 sp atk, 6 hp
    Calm Mind
    Surf
    Ice Beam
    Focus Blast

Should I be looking for high IVs in Golduck's speed, sp. attack, and HP, or should I be looking for high IVs in only his speed and sp. attack since those are the stats I am most focusing on for this special sweeper? OR, should I be trying to strengthen his weaker attributes with high IVs such as defense and sp. defense? Also, what is considered a high IV? I've been considering any IV over 24 an above average IV. Am I correct in believing this? If anyone could answer these questions for me I would greatly appreciate it. I'm really eager to destroy the battle tower! :rambo:

This will fit better in Strategies & Movesets.

Okay: the 30-second guide on IVs.

IVs go from 0-31. 31=best. There's no limit, unlike with EVs. Straight 31s is the bomb. Straight 0s is a different kind of bomb. For your Golduck, to make the most difference, breed for perfection in Speed and sp.atk. But, ultimate perfection is better.

24+ is still pretty good, yes. But look for 31.

When breeding for IVs, you have to keep in mind both parents involved. Two of the IVs are inherited from one parent, two are taken from the other parent, and the rest are randomized. What stats are taken from which parent is random as well, so to help increase your chances of getting good IVs in the stats you want, you may want both parents to have good IVs in those stats.

Due to this added difficulty, if you can get good IVs in two of the stats you really wanted, without being too horribly bad in all the other stats, then I'd settle for that.

And as far as what is considered good, I believe most people settle for anything 21 and above, while the big perfectionists want 29 or above. x_x
