Questions on online play

Hello. :)

I have played Pokémon since R/B/Y, but I have never played online, something I am very excited about doing. However, I have some questions:


1) Is there a matchmaking feature for online play or do I need friend codes and so on? (I don't know anyone IRL who plays Pokémon)

2) Is it worth bothering with trying to play online on Diamond/Pearl, or do I need Black/White? I currently only have Pokémon Diamond but I have no idea if anyone still plays that. I'm not sure if I want to but B/W or not.

3) Do I need friend codes for trading?

4) Is there any difference between online play in B/W and D/P?

1. There is random feature in Battle Tower that friend codes are not required for. I believe the same applies to Battle Subway(although I haven't played that yet). https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Global_Battle_Union#Random_Matchups you may want to look into Global Battle Union as well.

2. People still do play online in 4th Gen just not to the extent as years ago, of course with the advent of BW.

3. If you trade over Wifi Club then yes. If you do it over GTS then no. There is also GTS Negotiations which is random trading. My recommendation though is trade with people on forums like here in Trade Corner and just exchange friend codes with them.
