In need of a change of gaming and thinking of making my way onto a 3ds where pokemon obviously appeals. Now ive tried to look online and cant find the answer which seems daft. Cutting to the chase, im under the assumption that the newest games feature online play through wifi, trading and battling? If so which was the first game to feature online play, and are the older games still active online.
Or am i mistaken and they actually still only have nearby play? Thanks for any help.

WiFi play was introduced to the series in Generation 4, with Diamond/Pearl on the DS. WiFi service was shut down for DS (and Wii) games over 2 years ago, so the only main series Pokemon games that still have online play are the 6th generation ones, X/Y and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (for the 3DS).

    Thanks for your help!
