So, festival plaza is a thing that's happening in Sun and Moon, and it seems to be consistent with the general theme of gradual steps towards some kind of true "multiplayer" experience - as opposed to merely online battling and trading and etc. Seeing as Game Freak tends to add more and more online features each generation, I'm curious where this will end. Could we eventually get full multiplayer games? How do you think that would work, and would that be something you'd be excited for?

Are there any other possible online features that you hope might appear in a future generation?

This should be in the SM forum rite? Or maybe I was just quick-thinking.
    Uh, not really.... no

I merely brought up Festival Plaza as an introduction to the thread's topic.

I think I need to excercise patience.

I guess when I saw you bring up a new feature for SM I thought you were going to talk about it and posted without thinking.

Bring back The Underground from Gen IV except you can play it online with friends and I'd be satisfied.
    Maybe in a soon-to-be remake....

I was actually having a conversation with a good friend of mine the other day about the new Plaza feature in Su/Mo and how it's bringing us all that much closer to turning Pokemon into a controlled MMO style of game play,

With that idea in mind, I am actually excited for Pokemon to continue taking this route. It seems like the Plaza is a proper "Union Room" where all movements and interactions are live based on what any player might be doing within that area at any one time. It seems the environment and amount of people will be controlled based on what I assume would be a "Friends and Acquaintances" list, but I assume that would be to control the online interactions from not being like a true MMO where random strangers bump into each other and could be causing trouble for one another within a kids game. Still, I overall am really impressed with the direction they are taking this and I hope they continue to further expand this.

I have four really close friends who are all very into pokemon now with the Hype for Su/Mo and are excited to all meet up and play within this multiplayer feature, especially because two of these friends of mine live in completely different states.

My thoughts exactly! I don't know how far away we are from blurring the line, but it's definitely soon that something in the next couple of generations could introduce some kind of true multiplayer. I hope it wouldn't be entirely based on location though - bumping into random people nearby would be nice but I'd much prefer some kind of party/queue system that allows you to play with your friends in the overworld and the main storyline - as opposed to just some kind of side area like the Plaza. Singleplayer/multiplayer-hybrid games have been a thing on other platforms for ages, it doesn't seem like it'd be too complicated to figure out, at least in a mechanical sense.

Sure, they give us more and more "multiplayer" features each generation but I don't think this means we'll ever move into MMO territory. Pokémon is very much a single-player experience at its core, an integral part of the formula.

I think if they ever do want to go the multiplayer route it will be more like a set number of friends will be able to play in the same instance at the same time. Probably four players at once able to explore the same world. That would work well with the existing gameplay style.

It's definitely good to see that Game Freak is trying to improve the multiplayer within Pokemon, we've never really had a 'true' multiplayer experience so to speak and although we won't get it in Sun and Moon, I would really love to be properly in another player's world. It's definitely possible -many other 3DS games have done similar things- and even making quest like adventures to complete in the Pokemon world with your friends would be fun and a step in the right direction.
