New series about my thoughts on different versions. Note that this is OPINION BASED. Just because I like one pokemon better than another doesn't mean you like one pokemon more than the first... or something like that.
First off: Version exclusives
Exclusive to Red:
Ekans
Arbok
Oddish
Gloom
Vileplume
Mankey
Primeape
Growlithe
Arcanine
Scyther
Electabuzz
Exclusive to Blue (Green):
Sandshrew
Sandslash
Vulpix
Ninetales
Meowth
Persian
Bellsprout
Weepinbell
Victreebel
Magmar
Pinsir
Next, I'll organize them into similar groups and compare them.
Ekans/Arbok VS. Sandshrew/Sandslash
Personally, I like Sandshrew/Sandslash better, and the Sandshrew line is also stronger. Sandshrew has 12 more bst than Ekans, and Sandslash has 2 bst more than Arbok, although it's really the distribution that matters. Arbok has higher speed, but makes big sacrifices in a lot of other stats.
Vulpix/Ninetales VS. Growlithe/Arcanine
I personally like Ninetales better, but Arcanine wins when it comes to competitive. Since I am trying to be unbiased, competitive matters more then my opinion, so Arcanine wins.
Red- 0, Blue: 2
Bellsprout line/Oddish line:
This is an interesting line, because their final evolutions are equally powerful, yet Oddish and Gloom are more powerful than their grass counterparts. Vileplume also has arguably better stat distribution, and moves.
Red- 0, Blue: 3
Mankey line/Meowth line
Mankey line has better stats, and arguably better coverage, but more weaknesses. Fighting type covers ice, dark, rock, steel, normal, while normal covers none. Fighting only has 2 more weaknesses then normal, and 3 isn't bad at all.
Red-1, Blue: 3
Scyther/Pinsir:
Scyther and Pinsir used to be two of the best pokemon, appearing on lots of teams. And they are pretty evenly matched. Pinsir wins by just a bit because of it's arguably better moveset.
Red-1, Blue:4
Magmar/Electabuzz:
Magmar has higher bst by 5, however 5 bst doesn't decide the contest. Electabuzz ends up winning just because it has better type advantages.
Red-2, Blue:4
Next, let's take a look at the game corner pokemon:
(Red) Abra - 180
Clefairy - 500
Nidorina - 1200
Dratini - 2800
Scyther - 5500
Porygon - 9999
(Blue) Abra - 120
Clefairy - 750
Nidorino - 1200
Pinsir - 2500
Dratini - 4600
Porygon - 6500
Blue has lower prices for every pokemon except Clefairy, which isn't a big deal because you can get it at Mt. Moon.
Red-2, Blue:5
Therefore, Blue would be the better game to get in my opinion. Stay tuned for the next entry, where I compare Red and Blue to Pokemon Yellow Version!
