4th Gen Raise happiness when walking against walls?

    So I ahve this Eevee of lvl 1 and want to let it evolve in espeon at lvl 2. Because of that I have to walk around with it pretty much, but I can't measure it's happiness since I'm only in Cherrygrove city.

    Now I was wondering, since 256 steps with a pokmeon increases it's happiness with 1, does it count when you keep walking against a wall? Kinda like, putting some tape over the move button and just let it walk for a few hours?
     
    pretty sure that wouldn't work...cuz your not taking any steps
