    In preparation for Sun and Moon, let's reflect on the previous gens, which are your favourite generations and why?

    Please remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and instead of responding to them telling them how you disagree, why not just post your least favourite to most favourite gens.

    I'll start my list:

    Number 6. Gen 5 (Black and White 1&2): Added a few new cool Pokemon, but other than that there isn't much positive things I can say about this generation.

    Number 5: Gen 4 (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum): Loved this when it first came out, seeing how much it benefited from the DS with the beautiful new graphics at the time was a joy to see, also loved the starters. I didn't play too much of gen 4 though since I was busy with other stuff at the time, looking forward to the remake of it so I can have a full playthrough of it.

    Number 4: Gen 3 (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald): It lacked for most part of the story, especially having an extremely underwhelming rival, but seeing the two legendary Pokemon battling it out, as well as the other new creative Pokemon that we're added made up for it. Overall, decent generation.

    Number 3: Gen 2: (Gold, Silver, Crystal) Pretty similar to gen 1. The new Pokemon and breeding were amazing additions like breeding for example, as well as the extended gameplay, and how can we leave that iconic battle with red.

    Number 2: Gen 6 (X and Y): I'm most certainly going to be in the minority here by putting gen 6 so high up on the list, but I can't think of a bad thing so say about this gen. Everything from the astonishing graphics, to the added character customisation, to the kanto starters at the lab, everything was near perfection.

    Number 1: Gen 1 (Red, Blue, Yellow): Revolutionary is the only way to describe gen 1, this made Pokemon into everything what is is today. The simple yet genius gameplay, the most memorable Pokemon of the franchise, the replay ability that never gets old, there's just something about the first gen of Pokemon games that can only be matched by only a few games in any franchises, pretty much anyone that grew up playing gen 1 would list it in their top 10 games of all time. They say you can never beat the original, and in this case that couldn't be more true.

    Gen 2 - great starters, great gym leaders, and so much nostalgia. I played through Silver so much as a kid.

    Gen 1 - I have the same thoughts on it as generation 2, but prefer gen 2 due to the introduction of day and night and the introduction of Dark and Steele types, breeding, eggs, etc.

    Gen 3 - the best starters of any Generation and some of the best Pokemon ever introduced in a single generation, imo


    Gen 4 - one thing I loved about this generation is the quality evolutions it gave to some much needed Pokemon (ie Murkrow, Sneasel, Magmar, etc). I also really liked the gyms and the storyline.

    Gen 6 - the graphics were/are amazing, but X and Y on a whole weren't that great, especially the post-game stuff

    Gen 5 - I'm not gonna lie, having no access to any previous generation Pokemon was a little upsetting. The direct sequels corrected this but even still these games just weren't great for me.

    Also I really enjoyed the difficulty Gen 4 brought to their games and wish more future games would adopt this. The games have gotten easier since some of those earlier generations.

    From worst to best...

    Gen I: Entirely too glitchy, archaic, and ugly. Has some great music, though, that FR/LG don't do proper justice.

    Gen II: Didn't do that much for the series, but it's way less buggy. Has a terrible level curve, though.

    Gen VI: See this post.

    Gen V: Triple battles and rotation battles are kinda eh. B1/W1 has way too high of an encounter rate for me to really enjoy it, TBH, although B2/W2 are my favorites in the series (yeah, I'm *really* not the biggest fan of B1/W1). The games do have a fair amount of difficulty, though, with B2/W2 even having a hard mode, albeit terribly implemented.

    Gen III: Ignoring Gen I's lackluster remakes, Emerald is the definitive pre-DS era Pokemon game, with the introduction of the Battle Frontier, double battles, and the first game to feature the now expected "save the world" type of story.

    Gen IV: The physical special split does wonders for the game. D/P are fairly slow, but Platinum corrects this a bit, in addition to having lots of lore, the return of the Battle Frontier, and Gold/Silver remakes that actually fix some of the problems with the originals! Platinum is also probably the first game in the series to show signs of actual difficulty, too.



    (Gen III is probably a bit biased, since Ruby was what introduced me to the series)
     
    6: Generation 1
    It was great for its time, which is a polite way of saying it hasn't aged well. Now most of the problems it has are due to Game Freak having to rush development, so its amazing that the game is even playable, let alone good.

    5: Generation 6
    I want to love this generation. I really do. All the changes to mechanics are great. Mega evolution is amazing. But...the plot of X and Y is garbage, the characters were forgettable, and it was insultingly easy. ORAS helped a bit...until I realized the Battle Frontier wasn't in it. The Delta Episode was great, but why couldn't we have both?

    4: Generation 3
    These games get me off Pokemon for a while. Some features were taken out for reasons unknown (kind of like gen 6). Still, I gave up on it a bit to soon. It got really good in the second half and had some kickass legendaries. It also introduced abilities, which has to be worth, like, 50 bonus points or something.

    3: Generation 2
    The true vision of Pokemon. Many features and Pokemon that couldn't make it to gen 1 were put in this game, with a few new improvements. And once you're done with Johto, you can go to Kanto. You even get to play the protagonist of the last generation. It was breathtaking.

    2: Generation 4
    When I finally got around to playing these games, I felt I did myself a disservice by getting off Pokemon. These games were everything I wanted. For the first time in a Pokemon game, I got stuck. I had to figure out how to get past obstacles without the game holding my hand every step of the way. Also, Cynthia is my bae.

    1: Generation 5
    The generation that got me back into Pokemon, and for good reason. This generation is challenging, has memorable characters, improved on the gameplay, and has the most compelling plot of the franchise to date. I firmly believe Champion Iris is the sole reason the Fairy type exists. Without it, she's just to broken.
     
    1. Generation I: It's when Snorlax first appeared and started to rock!
    2. Generation VII: It's the most developed Generation so far! The ball of the father or genderless could be inherited. That's what I like most about it.
    3. Generation VI: It's meaningful for me cause I started to play Pokemon X & Y on my first purchased handheld.
    4. Generation III: I played Leafgreen and Emarald on my PC and they were fantastic.
    5,6. The rest: I haven't played them yet and I won't do that!
     
    I'm very surprised at how unpopular gen 1 is among people here. Out of curiosity, for those of you who disliked gen 1 (or didn't like it as much as other Pokemon games) are you guys younger and had a different Pokemon generation around the time of your childhood then went back to black the older gens, or was you around when gen 1 was first released and have found that over time you've come to dislike it?

    It's the former for me, as I stated in my post. It's like, yeah, they're what made the series as popular as it is today, but they're still filled with problems (including a completely OP type in Psychic, as I forgot to mention earlier).

    Still, it's not like I'm calling the games Superman 64 quality or anything. They're actually playable, and the music is pretty nice; it's just that you don't see bad programming and glitches up the wazoo in the newer games/later games are more polished.

    I don't think that the glitches are much of an issue at all, like you said they're completely playable and most casual players would likely not notice any bugs or glitches. Besides some of the glitches are actually a good thing (Missingno and Mew for example) hence why they left them in the gen 1 remakes on the E shop for the 3ds, but that's just my take on it.
     
    Before I list the order of my favorite gens, I would like to point out that in one of the gens that has remakes, I have split that gen in two parts. Course the lower the number the more I like it. Now here is my list:

    Number 1: Gen I
    Number 2: Gen II
    Number 3: Gen III
    Number 4: Gen IV (pre HG/SS)
    Number 5: Gen V
    Number 6: Gen VI
    Number 7: Gen IV (HG/SS)
     
    Still, it's the principle of the matter. Since we're comparing and ranking the games together, the ones that have an insane number of bugs are obviously gonna lose a few points. Hell, the Gen I games are so wacky that you can program them to play a game of pong!

    I played it when it first came out and can see its flaws as well as the virtues.
     
    In terms of Pokemon

    1, 2, 6, 3, 7, 5, 4 (Gen 4 is ranked last for Magmortar, Tangrowth and Electivire)

    In terms of the games themselves

    6, 2, 1, 3, 5 (Haven't played Gen 4)

    For the record, both are Best to Worst.

    This will be fun :)

    Generation One - I've only ever played Gen 1 once, and that was Yellow on the Virtual Console. I have to say I never really felt too connected with the game and didn't enjoy it too much. I've no doubt of its nostalgic significance and at the time it was amazing, but for me, I couldn't quite get into it.

    Generation Five - Don't get me wrong, I love Gen 5, but I feel like the Pokemon let it down, this is just something personal but I didn't enjoy most of the Pokemon in this generation and having not played B2/W2, I've been stuck with them for most of my experience with Unova.

    Generation Six - The 3D engine and ORAS is just enough to make Gen 6 climb above Generation 5 on my list. It added loads of new features and looked beautiful, even though XY had many faults, my love for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire just does enough for me.

    Generation Two - Seeing as I only ever played Crystal from Gen 2, the fact that it's this high up the list shows how much I enjoyed it. It was my first ever experience of Johto and I fell in love with this game, travelling back to Kanto and fighting Red are things that I'll always remember from this amazing game.

    Generation Four - Initially, I wasn't the biggest fan of DPP, but over the years the games have grown on me, Sinnoh is a really interesting region and the story was pretty good too. HGSS are seriously one of the best Pokemon games of all time imo and are pretty near to perfect.

    Generation Three - Well I suppose I'm sorta biased seeing as this Generation was where I first started playing Pokemon and became captivated by it. FR was my first ever Pokemon game and I still love it to this day, Emerald however was where my obsession with the series really began, I literally played as often as I could, the Pokemon and the region were perfect and I don't have stronger nostalgia for anything else.

    (I pretty much love every Generation, so don't hate me)
     
    From favorite to least favorite

    1: Gen 2 love this generation so much Great music cool areas to explore and let's not forget that you get to travel to Kanto after defeating the elite four how cool is that! (it was pretty awesome at the time) Only flaw i would say about this generation though is that all battles until up to the point where you fight Red is a breeze They could've done a better job on that honestly.

    2: Gen 3 loved the new look of this game Almost felt like i was playing gen 1 you get to explore a much better environment find that most places that was in gen 1 and 2 has been redone to look more awesome And you also get to fight Blue one of my most favorite champions of all time After defeating that you get to travel to all of the seven islands which has one of my most favorite music in the whole game

    3: Gen 5 Great music Great characters a small taste of the 3D environment along with more fanastic sights as the Pyramid in the desert restort filled with ghosts of the past called Yamask it also gets 1+ for having the most interesting storyline in Pokemon in my book

    4: Gen 4 ah generation 4 so many good memories but you had your flaws First of that annoying part where you have to have seen every single sinnoh pokemon just to get past the fight area And the part where you climb Mt. Coronet with all one of those HM slaves in your party just to fight one of the easiest fights in the whole game against Cyrus who was much tougher in Pokemon platnium (thank god for that) But onto the positive things about Gen 4 now it has good music interesting pokemon designs
    among one of the spookiest areas in the pokemon franchise the old chateau that place managed to creep me out back in the day

    Honorable mentions goes to gen 6 i haven't played it yet

    I was considering having gen3 as my least fav, but however, it had plenty of redeeming qualities, like improving the box system, and introducing stuff like natures and abilities. Gen1...think about it. Poor box system, a mediocre variety, tons of glitches, no plot, Psychics being broken, and it was just...not great. I tried it before, it was still playable and had redeeming qualities, so it can be good. But its just not great.

    As a whole, I think gen1 is overrated honestly. Sure it started it all, but that's about it. It was probably decent for it's day, but time passed and the other gens grew to outclass it. I don't hate gen1, but I just think the other, newer gens outshine it.

    But anyway, we all have opinions. If you think gen1 was the best ever than fine. I just think it gets too much credit for being the 'originals' and that the newer, more improved gens should be given a chance.

    I don't think gen 1 is overrated at all, the fact that it was the first ever Pokemon game and was released when Pokemon was at it's most popular with the mainstream is why people love it so much, as well as the nostalgia it holds. Without gen 1 as a whole and the Pokemon from gen 1, Pokemon what not be anywhere near what it is today. Obviously 20 years down the line we've had better gameplay and such, but it was simply revolutionary for it's time, as good as all the other gens are they just didn't revolutionize handheld gaming/RPG's/gaming in general like gen 1 did. Also FR/LG we're near perfection imo by erasing the flaws that Red/Blue/Yellow had, and although they're more classed as gen 3 because of the features and graphics, they're a remake of a gen 1 game, so gen 1 even deserves credit there for allowing it to be made in such a beautiful game.
