Real Life Pokémon Meet-ups?

A local comic book store in my area has meet-ups and tournaments every Saturday for the Pokémon trading card game, but since I don't play the card games, I always thought it was lame that there aren't any sort of meet-ups for people who play the video games to battle, trade, and just make new friends who all share an interest in Pokémon.

So, I spoke with the owner of a local retro gaming shop about doing meet-ups every other weekend for people to bring their DSes/Game Boys to battle, trade, and make friends. He's totally down for the idea and I'll be meeting with him later this week to discuss it further.

Does anybody have any sort of Pokémon meetups where they live?

At a social group I sometimes go to, we have "game night" and a few people bring Pokemon. That's the closest thing.

I also remember YEARS ago (5?) one of those Pokemon tours came over where I live. It was AWESOME.

    @Paper Ghost

Oh man! I remember that, the 10th anniversary. I was around 17 or 18 at the time and was surprised that there were a lot cool people my age and up. I half expected anyone over 20 who like POkémon to be mutants and uber-geek shutins with terrible people skills, but they turned out to be pretty cool dudes and dudettes. Now I'M the dude over 20 who's into Pokémon. God, what people must think of me hahah!

Naah, none that I know of. I think there might be some sort of Pokemon club at my school, or there was, but I'm too shy to ask around...

There used to be TCG tournaments at the K.B. Toys and Wizards Of The Coast stores, and Video Game things at Pokemon Center New York.
Since I moved to Florida, nothing. In sixth grade, our teacher let us play board or video games on the last day, as we'd already had the exam, and I remember people bringing in the then-new D/P. But nothing official here.

Pffft, I wish there was something like that where I live. I would LOVE that as no-one I know plays Pokemon. It would be so cool to make new friends IRL that also like Pokemon :)

What's stopping you!? Just talk to a manager at your local video game or comic shop about doing weekly/bi-weekly/or monthly events. That's what I did and it worked like a charm!

It drives business for them, and makes a fun time for you. Everybody wins. It's totally worth a shot, plus, it does something awesome for your community by providing a way for people with similar interests to meet and have fun.

    Nothing specifically for Pokémon, no.
As I've said in a number of other posts, though, I go to anime/gaming conventions every once in a while. A friend of mine regularly hosts a Pokémon-related panel at the shows he goes to, which involve giveaways and trading shinies and things like that. That's really as close as I get to any kind of meet-up, and half of the time I forget to go to his panels.

Since the VGC I've been thinking about trying to make a pokemon group for Orlando on Meetup.com and hosting tournaments and stuff. Possibly having a small entry fee and using that money to buy a prize for the winner, or just giving him the money as a prize. Problem is I don't know where I could do this, and I don't know if people would be willing to wager on pokemon.

Well, I just met with the owner of this local gaming shop about the meetup and it's going to be a monthly meetup called Pokémon Fight Club. Since it's a retro gaming shop, there are plenty of Game Boys, Game Boy Colors, and oldschool Pokémon games. He even has the N64 games.

Maybe this should get its own post, but the first meetup takes place on July 24th from 1-3 at Level Up Video Games and Collectibles in Wyomissing, PA. The first 20 people to come get an event Arceus holding a Master Ball and we're also raffling off a pretty sweet Pokémon prize pack. Raffle tickets are only $1, but the prizes are worth way more.

Ah, I wish. In Adelaide we used to have a card game event usually every second Saturday, which wasn't that fun, because I always lost :D

It would be nice to have a DS event, so we could all meet in the room thing and trade :3
