Houndoom is one of my Special Sweeper, and I was just wondering whether I should give him Hidden Power as a forth move (the others being flamethrower, dark pulse and nasty plot)

Hidden Power is Fighting at 60 Power

Well, 60 base power is certainly good enough for Hidden Power and Fighting isn't a bad type for it. Houndoom's special movepool is lacking anyway and Hidden Power Fighting is a good way to OHKO Tyranitar after (or maybe even before.) a Nasty Plot so I'd say yes, give it Hidden Power. I can't figure out any other use for HP Fighting than owning Tyranitar, though, but Sludge Bomb (the only high-power non-STAB, non-chargeable special move excluding Shadow Ball that covers exactly the same things Dark Pulse does it has in its arsenal) is even more useless so just go with Hidden Power.

I actually wasn't thinking about fellow Dark types, I was thinking more about putting dents into walls such as Blissey due to being Super Effective...

Thanks for your input, I think I will give it Hidden Power now

EDIT: Odd, now that Houndoom knows Hidden Power it turns out to be Ice (Super effective against Flying and Dragon types) but the calc still says it should be Fighting

STAB Flamethrower will do more damaga than a super effective 60 base power move.

And Ice is the best Hidden Power for Houndoom. It beats Salamence and Garchomp, two very common threats in the 4th generation. And are you sure the calculator you're using is completely accurate?

Probably not, hence why I'm sticking with my Hidden Power Ice... I'm happy with it, but I'd like to know what power it is doing anyway

Well I know it's type, and it's power I believe is rather good as well, since it was able to OHKO a Salamence in the Battle Tower (mind you that is a 4x weakness and an EV trained Pokemon hitting it)

well, maybe find a friend for some testing, agree to disconnect no matter whatway the battle is going.
you're very lucky if you managed to get a good natured houndoom with hp Ice.
