So, traditionally we have a "rodent" or "bird" on each Pokemon Generation, possibly serving as one of our very first captures, alongside our starter Pokémon as we travel throughout the game. Maybe we use the rodents for tasks like using Strength, or just brute force, while the birds we can use to fly, but either way, they are handy Pokemon to have around!

    The birds include:

    Pidgey (Gen 1)

    *image removed*
    Hoothoot (Gen 2)

    *image removed*
    Taillow (Gen 3)

    Starly (Gen 4)

    *image removed*
    Pidove (Gen 5)

    Fletchling (Gen 6)

You can maybe argue that Pidgey was also kind of the "traditional bird" in Gen 2, since Hoothoot was only common at night, but yeah. Now, the rodents include:

    Rattata (Gen 1)

    Sentret (Gen 2)

    Zigzagoon (Gen 3)

    Bidoof (Gen 4)

    Patrat (Gen 5)

    Bunnelby (Gen 6)

Gen 6 had way more diversity as you can also see Bidoof pretty early in the game, but Bunnelby was the one that was newly introduced! Anywho, for the discussion: Do you use any of the traditional birds / Rodents in game? How useful were they? Which one of these Rodents / Birds do you think you like the most in terms of evolution line, or what they can do? Any other thoughts? Feel free to share!

The only early game rodents I've used are Zigzagoon, Sentret and Bidoof. The former two because Linoone and Furret are actually decent in battle and the latter because Bibarel is like the ultimate HM slave.

Of the birds, I've only ever regularly used Starly and Fletchling. Staraptor is one of my favourite Gen 4 Pokémon, and Fletchling gains Fire type when it evolves which is great as I love Fire types but I don't like the Fennekin line, so between Fletchling, Litleo and Charmander, I've got some decent early game Fire options.

I normally catch my birds last (or not until I get HM02) and never use Normal-types and thus don't bother with either early birds or early rodents. I do like Fletchling since it's the only one that gets a major type change.

To be honest, I don't really like them all that much. Don't get me wrong, some of them are cute and can definitely be strong if you train them right, but I never really see any spot for them on the teams I build. Sometimes I'll pick up a bird along the way if I don't have a Fly capable 'mon on my team yet, but for the most part I just ignore them, train on them, or catch one for my Dex and move along, haha.

Personally I love using Taillow and Swellow for a Traditional bird because it's reaaaally fast so it helps out a ton outspeeding those meddle some Dragon Dance users in-game, even after a +1 boost. Pretty good stuff!

As for rodents, I personally don't use them all that much but if I'd have to pick one, maybe I'd use Sentret. 'Cause Sentret and Furret are adorable and all! Maybe one day I'll try out Bunnelby because that and Diggersby are insanely strong with Huge Power... we'll see.

The birds always make good team members when fully evolved, but the rodents are only good early on in the games which is why I only use them as HM slaves.
