It's over... just like that.
JUST A NOTE: If you have heard of this soap opera and you are behind in the episodes, don't read this blog. Just... don't! Most of it is going to be about the finale. :(
I just watched the most epic finale in the history of Telenovelas. As I write this, tears are still falling from my eyes, because the ending is really, really, really sad and depressing.
If you follow me on twitter and/or have me on Facebook, you may have seen me add a hashtag next to my tweets, called #rptv. It stands for Relaciones Peligrosas TV, or in short, Relaciones Peligrosas..."Dangerous Relationships" in English. The soap opera started in January and it ended today, so it had a really, really good run. It was filmed in Florida, where the setting took place. Plus the fanbase is really large, expanding in most Spanish-speaking countries, soon it'll come to Mexico.
If you don't want to read the story, just read the bolded tl;dr. xD
The story is really interesting, and it makes you wonder irl. It begins with 27-year-old Spanish teacher Miranda Cruz. She just moved to south Florida to start her new teaching career at Cervantes Academy for the Spanish Arts. Days before school started, and one night at the beach, she was assaulted by two high school students. Immediately she was rescued by a man, and dragged the two students away. The guy becomes Miranda's love interest, and his name would be Mauricio.
Mauricio tells Miranda that she's beautiful and adorable, and he tells her that he's single and he just turned 21 years old. He only did that to get with her. Soooo, fast forward...they make out, go out to places... and the next day, it was the first day of school. Miranda's first day as a teacher was on the same day. At school, as Miranda was getting ready for her first day of class, the first student who shows up to her class was the same guy that rescued her from the assault, and the guy she thought he was 21. Mauricio, in reality, is 17 and a high school senior.
This is not your typical "prohibited" love story you see everyday. Miranda wasn't aware that the sexual age of consent is 18 in the state of Florida. She wasn't aware that Mauricio is still a minor. Who's going to get in trouble? Miranda.
They tried keeping everything a secret, but instead the secret was being spilled little by little, everywhere. Even Mauricio's family was aware something was up between them. Especially to the fact that Miranda was assigned to be Mauricio's tutor so she can help him go to Columbia University.
The main villain of this story? Juan Pablo Reyes. Or...let's call him JP. He's not your everyday physical education teacher. He's had a past record. He fell for Miranda, as if it was love at first sight. Later on in the series, he finds out that Mauricio is in love with Miranda and at one point he catches them kissing in hiding. It prompted JP to build a plan to have him stay away from Miranda. In the meantime, Miranda was pretending that she was in love with JP, and later finds out she's pregnant with Mauricio's baby. He did everything to protect her from Mauricio, including faking a relationship, and marrying her too quickly. But Miranda didn't want to pretend anymore, and they tried to flee from the US so they can raise the baby in Mexico. But the plan had flopped, thanks to JP.
Miranda was sentenced to 10 years of jailtime for sexual abuse of a minor. She had the baby while in jail, and Mauricio and her mother decided to take care of it. Fast forward six years or so, Mauricio did go to Columbia University and attended Law School. Thanks to his studies, and him becoming a lawyer, he was able to release Miranda on Parole...but the bad thing is that she is now a registered sex offender...for life. The baby, a girl named Mirandita, is now 6 years old.
A bit later on, Mauricio and Miranda got engaged, as they were planning to do so...for a while. To celebrate, they were going to buy ice cream, but instead, Miranda and Mirandita get kidnapped by a group of men sent by JP and his brother, Cuautehmoc. They both face the two brothers for the first time in six years, and JP already has plans to eliminate Miranda and take away her daughter. Mauricio was able to pinpoint the location where Miranda and Mirandita were held captive..thanks to Miranda's tracking device on her ankle. Mauricio finally makes it, and jumps into action. He first pushes Cuautehmoc off the building, blood splats out of his body and dies being stabbed on a pole.
Mauricio and Miranda tried to escape, but JP already had his aim on Mauricio, and the building was impossible to escape. He had a crossbow, already loaded, and JP says his final goodbyes to Mauricio. As he shoots the bow, Miranda gets in the way, and took the hit by her chest. JP sees that she has killed Miranda, he decides to commit suicide by falling off the building as well. At that time, Miranda was already losing life. losing blood. Her daughter clueless as to what happened. As she was taken to the hospital, doctors tried everything they could to save her...
A year later, and Mauricio and Mirandita were at the beach "If she was here right now, what would you say?" Mirandita said. "I love you mommy!" Miranda miraculously reappears, a year after the incident. They were a happy family, and the look forward to the future. The story ends with a quote by Mauricio, "Whoever remembers the past, dies a little everyday."
TL;DR: A 27-year-old woman and a 17-year-old high school student fall in love, where they live in a place where falling in love with each other is prohibited, and impossible.
Honestly I don't know if I'll ever see a soap opera like this one again. I was hooked by this show since day one, and I wouldn't mind seeing reruns, especially since iirc it's scheduled to premiere in Mexico. The story literally touched me, and it focused on many many in-real-life issues many citizens face today, like bullying in schools, domestic violence, drug trafficking, prostitution, and racism. It hits hard, really.
Maybe I'm being dramatic myself and turning into an old lady. But I'll be honest, I actually enjoyed it. #rptv, you were amazing. Thanks for teaching me how to *really* watch TV. xD
